refusal to participate due to self consciousness is actually more embarrassing than participating. it took me a very long time to figure that out. abject fear of embarrassment is actually causing you to do things that are more embarrassing than what you fear. you are gonna be embarrassed anyway. let go and be free

i think the reason kids get this like, explosive increase in art skill in such a short duration is mostly just ambition. i feel like older people getting into art don't want to ever try to do something they might not be good at but a kid just wants to draw what they see in their head, even if they suck at it. trying your best, failing, analyzing that failure so that you have an eye for it next time, all super important for growth in terms of technical skill. i'm always sitting around like "why is my perspective so fucking boring lately" and it's because i don't wanna be bad at it. my art from like ages 14-16 isn't good but holy shit i had some really interesting angles and poses because it was far more important to me that i drew my ideas as they came to me rather than make something technically accurate. and with my taste being more refined with age i don't have the same inclination to draw stupid bullshit as much but i think that's kind of the key... drawing things you wouldn't normally just because you thought of them. doodling, making self indulgent fanart, creating ugly characters, i think are all factors into why younger artists get better so quickly (just look at any random teen's artfight profile year over year, it's insane sometimes). i'm not an old dog and i already know these tricks. so why can't i do them lol
An American Woodcock came out of the brush a few feet in front of me today! I have been blessed by the Woodcock!
