denying the humanity of people who do horrible things accomplishes exactly three things:

give cover to people who haven't been caught yet by allowing them to use their humanity as "proof" of their innocence

silence any criticism of societal structures and institutions that facilitate those horrible things by putting the focus on individuals who are assumed to be so uniquely monstrous that the ways it was made easy for them are irrelevant

provide a shortcut to dehumanize anyone you feel like killing: simply accuse them of doing a horrible thing

3.a. if you've already established that only an inhuman monster could kill a child, then all you have to do to get people to burn down the jewish quarter is say that jews kidnap christian children to bathe in their blood

3.b. if you've already established that only an inhuman monster could commit rape, then all you have to do to get people to string up a black man you don't like is find a white woman who's willing to point at him while she cries and babbles

3.c. if you've already established that only an inhuman monster could molest a child, then all you have to do to get people to drag gay people behind their trucks is say that since gay people can't have babies, the only way they can make more gay people is by following a nefarious Agenda to "convert" children by molesting them

3.c.a. meanwhile if you try to address the rampant sexual assault of catholic altar boys, you're met with "don't be ridiculous, he's a priest!" (see #1) and with assertions that even if it does happen sometimes, those priests are just infiltrators who don't represent the church and there's no reason to make sure priests and altar boys are never alone together (see #2)

tl;dr: your disgust-based violent politics are not less reactionary than any run-of-the-mill homophobe or racist's disgust-based violent politics

I am indeed alright! I have endeavored to spend less time idly Internetting, as I already spend 40ish hours in front of a screen at work, so I’ve largely abandoned this venue. I still keep up to date with the news and at least some of the memes on Twitter, but only ever make a momentary passing-through Tumblr any more these days. Instead of idly internetting, I’ve been working on mostly house-keeping tasks and knitting, which has been really nice.

Like the first few episodes of s1, it was obvious that it was supposed to be about Piper. There’s been quite a shift since then I think.

Seriously though. This season was basically 20% “lol piper goes to the dark side and becomes a crime because because she was always an awful person” and 80% character development and emotional moments for all those characters you actually care about.

Cindy, Leanne, Suzanne and Pennsatucky were so interesting this season.

The writers said Piper was their trojan horse. That’s how they got the show accepted by producers and audiences alike, by telling them it’s a fish out of water story about a nice educated white lady. But their actual story was always about the other women in the show. 

Piper does have an important role in the show though. She’s the comparison point. She’s here to embody privilege. You can never dismiss the injustice of what happens to the others by saying “well they’re criminals”, because Piper is there to show that they don’t all get treated the same way. That’s the whole point of her character. Piper is also a criminal. But she’s also white, upper class and educated.

Piper is a mirror held to that section of the audience that enjoys the same privileges she does. She thinks of herself as a good person who cares about others. And for the most part she actually is. But she’s also much more selfish than she thinks she is. And while she thinks of herself as educated, she lacks immensely in awareness of the world around her. She may care about others, but for the most part she’s oblivious to the injustice done to others and the privileges she herself enjoys and her being oblivious has serious consequences for others. Janae, Tucky, Flores, even Alex (though she deserves most of what she gets) are a few of the women who have suffered solely because of Piper’s selfishness, insensitivity and self-righteousness.

Orange is the New Black is brilliant writing. Every single part of it, every single character is relevant. Saying the writers just suddenly realised/didn’t realise yet the POC women “stole” the show is doing them injustice. They knew exactly what they were doing.

Cops don’t have to know the law.

There was a supreme court decision recently that a cop is not falsely detaining someone if they’re doing something the cop reasonably believes is against the law, even if it’s actually legal. I think the specific case was about someone driving with a broken taillight in a state where a car is street-legal so long as at least one of its taillights works.

Meanwhile, as a civilian, ignorance of the law is not a defense.

Cops are not required to know the laws they enforce. You are required to know every law you might conceivably break. But then, of course, if you backtalk a cop because you have better knowledge of the law than they do, and they respond violently, good luck winning that.

The Story:

My girlfriend and I have struggled this entire year with terrible family situations - cheating, cancer, divorce, absuive parents, alcoholics, the list goes on. We were staying at my mothers until recent. My father came to the house out of no where and demanded we leave. Since his name was on the house, we were informed by police we would have to leave. So now we’ve been thrown to the streets by my absuive father. My girlfriend and I have no place to go until we can afford first months rent for an apartment. We have been staying at a friends house but only have until Friday to raise this money. All the help we can get is greatly appreciated.

Mike Browns Friend Shot By Police On One Year Anniversary Of Death. 

The person shot in Ferguson by a police officer after a day of commemorating the first anniversary of Michael Brown’s death has been identified by his father as 18-year-old Tyrone Harris Jr., of St. Louis, who was “real close” to Brown, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

After shooting him they handcuffed him and stood over his body, continuing to aim their guns while a witness recording the incident screamed and begged for them to get him medical attention. The man recording was then arrested for “disobeying police” and staying in the area. Thankfully the ambulance was called and he was rushed to the hospital, put into surgery, and is currently in unstable and critical condition.

The story is that apparently Harris had been tracked throughout the protest in an unmarked vehicle and in plainclothes (meaning not wearing their uniform but simply dressed as normal citizens) as police believed he was “armed.” Officers allege the suspect approached the detectives who were sitting in a van and opened fire with a 9mm gun that had been stolen last year.

They also believed him to be the suspect of the first shooting that occurred earlier that night. The incident reportedly involved two groups of people on the west side of West Florissant Avenue. It happened just before police shot Harris Jr. 

Belmar added that 40 and 50 shots were fired in an exchange between the two groups, and the incident he described as “remarkable” lasted around 45 seconds. “They were criminals. They weren’t protesters,” Belmar said of those involved in the shootings. He did not say if there were any casualties from the shooting on West Florissant Avenue. Protesters and members of the media who had gathered in the street took cover or fled when the firing started, The Associated Press reported.

The media and Police are both calling harris the “shooting suspect” but have no evidence to back it up. It’s all simply speculation at this point. Witnesses, including his girlfriend, are saying Harris never shot at police, he was just one of the bystanders trying to flee when the shots first rang out.

Pictures and Videos from that night also show that the original shooter was wearing completely different clothes than Harris and in the video, you can see the unmarked police car drive right past the shooter. 

The cops involved in shooting are on paid leave while there’s an investigation.
