grimmjow doesn't answer right away. as it stands, the smart remark dies somewhere behind his teeth. his eyes stay on her own, narrowed; not in suspicion this time, but in quiet disbelief, as though he's trying to figure out whether he'd misheard her.

" . . . huh. " the sound is little more than an exhale.

of all the things he'd expected to come out of her mouth, that hadn't even made the list. they'd spent every encounter on opposite sides of the battlefield. heroine and monster. crown and claw. and now . . . she trusted him. not completely. not forever. just . . . enough. grimmjow lets out a low chuckle, shaking his head as something irregular threatens the corner of his mouth.

confidence  spoken  with  only  moments  soften   into  something  honest,   gaze  drifting  past  his  shoulder  while  thinking  her  answer  over   ⸻   carefully.     debating  if  there  was  such  a  thing  as  being  too  open.     she  eventually offers a response.          ❝     honestly,   it's  getting exhausting.     ❞          faint  laughter  huffs  through  her  nose,   amused  with  herself.     being  on  guard  around  him  had  become  second  nature.     instincts  were  not  born  by  the  sight  of  sharp  edges   ;   she  could  look  past  them,   hardly  the  type  to  assess and react based on  what's presented on  the  surface....     this wasn't  meant  to  come  across  as  some  big  revelation though,   only  observation.
