"In a few days, Padmé had worn white for death, white for battle and finally, white for love."
- Star Wars Fact File #128
"What the Jedi Code Teaches Us About Losing Everything" - Kieran Kelly
“But, sometimes, Anakin cried when he thought Ahsoka was asleep, and couldn’t hear him, because he’d never really left. He knew his mother better after she was dead. He only knew his mother once he’d failed her.”
Sometimes a fic drops a series of lines so hard you have to just thousand yard stare the poor kid manning the airport coffee stand.

Academy Award winner Marcia Lucas has died. While winning major awards for her work as an editor for Star Wars (alongside a team of editors, including Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew; some of her contributions outside of her work with George Lucas include Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Taxi Driver, and New York, New York), she mostly disappeared from the public eye following her divorce and essentially retired.
While Marcia dispelled the belief that she singlehandedly saved Star Wars in the edit (and very passionately defended George's craftmanship and ideas, which she felt were undercredited, as well as the work of their team in general), there was a lot of work she specifically did and I thought it would be good to highlight just how much she did and give her credit where it is due. There is a lot that came from her that most don't know about. Most of those examples are from Howard Kazanjian's biography, A Producer's Life, published in 2021.
On some of the uncredited dialogue and story revisions for Star Wars:
On some of her work in Star Wars:
On having the iconic trench run on the Death Star as her biggest work while working on Star Wars:
On her uncredited work in The Empire Strikes Back:
On how her input changed the ending of Raiders of the Lost Ark:
On her joining the Return of the Jedi crew, an emphasis in finding the right cut for actors, cutting together footage of Luke in ROTJ after she and George disagreed with the characterization the director had given to Mark Hamill and unable to reshoot footage:
On editing the climactic ending in the Throne Room in ROTJ:
truly wonderful to see people call anakin "disability coded" when he is very very explicitely disabled. like i get what you mean. but he is actually disabled. he doesn't have an arm. why do people forget he doesn't have an arm. honestly it's a shame how his physical disability isn't really considered in fandom conversations around him. that's also why I really fw brotherhood and the wild space novel. they finally give some insight as to how he felt about losing a limb, and also what that meant for him considering possible negative jedi views about having a mechanical arm and a bit on how he recovered. I can't speak for people with that kind of disability but I wish that anakin's mechanical arm wasn't just treated in a "oh! too bad he lost an arm! well he can just get an exactly identical one except now he wears a cool glove and nothing else changed!" way cause it definitely did impact his character a lot. same for luke in many ways. I get where people are coming from and I don't mean this maliciously at all but also they ARE disabled people forget that a lot.
this comment being about tcw just makes everything better

I think it says something more about people who criticize Padmé from dying of a heartbreak because she lost Anakin by summing it up to “if I had my babies, I’d never lose the will to live over a man.” Talking about Padmé as if she’s some damsel in distress who has no personality or wits outside of her relationship with a man or is some sort of “pick me” who lives off of male validation. Like that’s literally Padmé Amidala you’re talking about. A champion of peace, liberator of her planet, carved a successful career as the voice of reason throughout the entire galaxy so much that she’s heavily targeted by assassins and other corrupt politicians, and was a whole queen when she was 14. Padmé not choosing Anakin’s side in the end despite loving him so much should speak volumes on how her character isn’t centred around her “husband.”
I also think it’s crazy to level down Anakin’s importance in Padmé’s life to something as dull and incorrect as “he’s just some guy.” Anakin was not some random man that Padmé couldn’t live without. He was the love of her life, her soulmate, her one and only happiness in a galaxy going corrupt, her family, her world, and basically everything. Mind you, that Padmé never batted an eye at any man in her entire life and even rejected potential suitors who would’ve given her the life she’s always wanted because she was her own person with her own goals and passions to change the world she was living in. Definitely not a trait of someone who was living her life for a man.
Oh and while we’re on the topic of her not being able to pull through despite having her children to live for, I just want to say that it’s sort of victim blamey to criticize the woman who’s been through hell and back, and lost the one good thing in her life to corruption and madness. Does it ever cross your mind that Padmé didn’t WANT to die??? She couldn’t help that she was so heartbroken over losing Anakin so much that it killed her. She used the last bit of strength to bring her beloved children into the world and see with her own eyes at least once. If Padmé could pull through, she WOULD HAVE. She would have lived for her children, hell, she’d even live to bring Anakin back home cause that’s how much she loved him and believed in his goodness. Fact is, that her death ISN’T her fault, and her heartbreak over Anakin is valid. I’m so sick of people trying to gaslight the narrative into looking like it’s made Padmé into some damsel who couldn’t go on cause she lost a dick, when it’s much more profound and nuanced than just that. Padmé is a very empowering woman, and one of our generations most inspiring female characters in all of fiction. I can’t stand to see her being reduced to this by fans who failed to comprehend the connection and bond between her and Anakin.

— HAYDEN CRISTENSEN as Anakin Skywalker and NATALIE PORTMAN as Padme Amidala in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
C-3PO makes me laugh because you have to remember he was assembled by a child out of things from a scrap heap. Everything about him makes sense if you bear that in mind. Anakin wanted a droid who could help his mother, but the only AI package he could find was one somebody threw out for being too fussy. The combination of tweaking to give him a worried/caring personality makes him constantly anxious. A protocol droid comes with a fair amount of language packages, but why stop there? Somebody threw out like, three different galactic language dictionaries because they weren’t the recent edition. Just load ‘em all up. all of them, even the packs that contain things like ewok and a thousand variants of different manufacturers’ droid codecs. don’t add half the other requirements most legal protocol droids have included at the factory like emergency wipe protocols or shutdown failsafes, or programmed obsolescence. Build that sucker out of non-commercial materials that are already over a hundred years old and still good, tweak it to withstand tatooine of all places.
so now you have this droid that is over thirty years old and it could never be obsolete because it was never manufactured by anybody but a kid on a sand ball somewhere, it’s never running down because it was built to last on tatooine and there’s nothing programmed in to try and urge you to buy the latest model because there is no latest model. 3P0 is simultaneously totally useless yet hyper functional because he was not made according to any specs except “the best most toughest things possible to help my mom for a long long time on a hot desert planet”
re-watching the original trilogy is great because you really get a sense for how weird luke skywalker is, just how quickly he becomes that weird AND how quickly he commits to it. Like he's honestly pretty chill in a new hope, but the absolute INSTANT he figures out he can move shit with his mind he goes full send on the cryptic off-putting bullshit. Walking around in full black robes, speaking in riddles, aura farming and backflipping whenever physically possible. He's clearly annoyed when he first meets yoda in empire, but he dismisses that pretty quickly in favour of ALSO becoming an over-dramatic space wizard. The combination of his two teachers being yoda and obi-wan kenobi and him being the son of anakin and padme creates the single most intense and fundamentally kind force sensitive perfectly embodying the heart of the jedi order whilst also serving egregious amounts of cunt and being bizarre to be around. He would have THRIVED as a jedi master during the high republic. he would have been every padawan's favourite and every other master's worst nightmare
