The CAUCASIAN joke has returned!
Sort of.
The chances of caucasian loading instead of peachy is about 50/50.
(For those uninformed, the original punchline was “I feel so… CAUCASIAN!” until it was quickly changed to “PEACHY!” due to criticism.)
ANDREW HUSSIE Q&A
Recently, the official server hosted a Q&A for Andrew to respond to.
Here are the following questions and answers…
“The songs always came first. They we're almost never composed with a particular animation in mind. They all existed in reserve then I would pick one for an animation I had in mind, or sometimes a song would just give me ideas for an animation. Only a few were arranged for an animation coming up, Cascade being one of those which is probably obvious because nobody was making 15 minute songs back then. It's just a few preexisting songs that got stitched together and reworked a little based on directions I had, because I knew the general sequence of things. There were only a couple other examples like this, the end of Act 6 and Act 7. All other animations I used existing songs for and arranged the animation entirely around the timing of songs, and often let the stuff happening in the song shape ideas for what was going on in the animation, like a sort of "audio-storyboarding". All of the music was extremely influential on the way the content took shape and you could say even dramatically shifted the narrative sometimes.”
“Well first I would say don't try to make something like Homestuck yet, it's too ambitious and complex, which isn't to say you can't shoot for something like that some day, but it's better to start much smaller and try to get some finished works in your collection. Leaving things unfinished is something that plagues aspiring creators and can lead to a lot of self doubt. So controlling scope to be manageable is a good idea for a while. This isn't to say you can't draw inspiration from what Homestuck did. If you look around the fandom you'll see countless fanworks that Homestuck inspired, many in the "MSPA" format, which is exactly what you see HS doing. Each page has a panel, as many words underneath as you like including none, and a casual style of advancing the story where pretty much anything goes. Any mixed-media experiment, any unconventional storytelling ideas you have, any blend of humor and seriousness, for as long as you want. It's a great format for exploring your creative boundaries, and many creators have started with fanworks like this and gone on to do more impressive things later.”
“I haven't seen Ballsweat Horsecock yet, I think the server staff might be keeping them from me, concerned that if I saw them I might get a little worked up and cause an incident. They would be right about this. As always their judgment needs to be trusted implicitly and everyone needs to be doing their part to make sure my containment field isn't breached.”
“On paper, Homestuck lasted for 7 years, 2009-16. Zooming in a little, there was a period of virtually uninterrupted work for about 4.5 years, at which point there was the "gigapause" which was a year long gap. Those 4.5 years really were nonstop work, with the only gaps being ones which preceded drops like Cascade, which needed a 6 week pause while I worked on it constantly until it was done. I wouldn't even say this lifestyle was challenging because it's just what life was back then. If it tried to be two things, work insanity + normal life, that would be challenging, but by eliminating the second thing it was possible. The first 4.5 years really was an "all day every day" thing. Weekends and holidays were indistinguishable from other work days, and work days included nothing but work, which was interrupted only by sleep, often only briefly. Once you reinvent yourself to be something like that, the extreme labors don't even really feel that difficult anymore, just normal. But just because this is possible doesn't make it a good idea, and I don't really recommend anyone attempt such a thing. If you spread it out to a more sane pace of work, realistically Homestuck was something like a 20 year project, or maybe longer. We are only at year 16 since it started, so it still wouldn't be done at that rate. So it's almost worth asking, would a story like Homestuck be worth making if it took 2 or 3 decades to finish? I'm inclined not to think so, and that's about how I felt back then, which is why there was so much intensity put into it forcing it into a relatively small window of time. It also helps explain why over this span I became obsessed with methods of creative efficiency as they relate to visual storytelling. Everything you see in HS is an expression of this efficiency, or an exploration of it. The question at all times was, how do I maximize the engagement time of the reader while minimizing the labor time needed to secure that engagement? For aspiring creators I feel this is one of the most valuable things it has to offer, a sort of guide by example on how to economize your creative decisions to the fullest extent while still drawing strong reactions from readers.”
“I think it's good to see, and no matter what anyone may say about the fandom and the less flattering side of its reputation, you can always count on moments where the fandom shows its true nature, which I've long felt was primarily characterized by passion for creativity. A thing I've had to make certain adjustments for is that popular properties literally never die. There's always going to be some level of interest keeping it alive, and then interest picks up again, new adaptations are proposed, pilots get made, and the cycle just continues, probably forever. As long as I'm around I'll probably keep getting pulled back into its gravitational well, because as the creator necessarily so many of these new developments revolve around me and what I have to say. Either I can say "hey don't talk to me about this" or I can remain somewhat engaged. The first option doesn't quite work, because it communicates something false, which is the impression that I see no value in the work or what it accomplished, or hold no appreciation for those with good intentions who keep its spirit alive. I value both of these aspects of its legacy, so it seems only reasonable to make room in my remaining lifespan to offer a certain amount of guidance over its continuing evolution.”
“If you mean how long did Cascade take to make, about 6 weeks. Previous to that the next longest time it took to make something was Descend which I think was only about a week. There really wasn't much reason for Cascade to go as hard as it did, something less probably would have sufficed. It was just another installment in what I viewed as an "extreme creator" arc where the goal was always to outdo myself, and also outdo myself by substantial margins nobody was expecting. At the time it wasn't really the type of thing anybody thought was going to drop, and before that, Descend wasn't either, and so on. The problem with such escalation is at some point it hits the maximum of what is possible within short timeframes and Cascade was probably that, which unavoidably means what follows represents an exploration of ideas like recession, rebooting, revisitation, deconstruction, and other extremely cool meta-narrative themes which everyone definitely loves. These are ideas, for better or worse, which carry the story through Act 6.
As for what I would change leading up to Cascade, I personally wouldn't change anything, but other people might have answers to this, such as readers maybe, and Homestuck characters definitely.”
“I know I'm probably supposed to be avoiding spoilers with newgen questions, and I'm not sure if this is really a spoiler, but nobody is ever even that dead after death in Homestuck. If you feel a character was mishandled before death, have some patience, you'll see there are so many new and inventive ways for me to mishandle characters by bringing them back to life.”
“Maybe if they leave their houses so soon after the story begins, and the story is called "Homestuck", then we can surmise their physical houses were never their true homes in the first place. And maybe, if we want to make even less sense, we can further deduce that their true homes were the metaphorical houses they got stuck in along the way.”
“I like all the newgen fan designs, and with all respect to the oldgens, they're better than any speculative designs I ever saw back in 2009. But fandom culture was totally different back then, you really couldn't expect such explosions of fan art and speculative creativity. Greater fandom culture radically changed during Homestuck's run to resemble what people now take for granted today, and I don't think I'm being too indulgent by saying Homestuck's run actually did a lot to shape modern fandom culture. It feels pretty crazy saying this, like I'm on some unc shit, trying to tell kids that back in the day fandom wasn't like this, and it's only like this now because I started posting way too hard for 7 years. But that really does seem to be what happened. I was there, I saw it happening, and for this I will forever owe the world the debt self-exile, which I stubbornly refuse to pay.
I can't think of much I wanted to put into Homestuck but didn't, but can think of a bunch of things I didn't want to put in, but did, and a bunch of things I did want to put in, did put in, but shouldn't have. Suffice to say the number of things which got put into Homestuck vastly exceeds the number of things which didn't, which explains why Homestuck just keeps on happening. There are just so many fucking things left to cram into Homestuck, whether I or anyone else wants them there or not.”
“I expected Fedora Freak to be a runaway sensation, but he sadly got very little attention. Recent events have corrected this grave cosmic travesty. Also little known fact, Homestuck was going to be a one page gag showing a kid named Zoosmell and then quickly cut over to Fedora Freak and watch him fold laundry for hundreds of pages, but fan reception to the first page was so overwhelming, I had to pull a crazy story out of my ass just to make the fans happy.”

“I haven't paid close attention to the newgen theories, but I keep hearing of bits and pieces which are on the right track, which is a lot more than can be said about the oldgens who were reading live at the time. People never guessed anything right back then. Although sometimes someone would speculate something so outlandishly weird or dumb I would find a way to incorporate the idea into the lore, or at least reference it in some way. I'm not sure if newgen readers are more media savvy than the old ones, or maybe they've been exposed to spoilers ambiently and are subconsciously calling shots better, or maybe they all just came from the Undertale and Deltarune fandoms where those games channel the same kind of energy because Toby himself trained his worldbuilding instincts by imbibing heavily from my specific brand of idiot juice. So deductions by Homestuck logic which wouldn't make sense to normal people make perfect sense to them. This sounds like a pretty good theory right? See, fans can have fan theories about creators, and creators can have creator theories about fans.”
“Oh trust me it makes no sense whatsoever. However I deployed many cunning tricks and gambits which made you think it does. And when you really think about it, isn't that a lot more impressive than making something which makes sense? Making sense is easy. Making the senseless assume mysteriously coherent forms which demonstrate an unnerving degree of self awareness so as to haunt the dreams of millions as well as its own creator, now that's hard to pull off. It also turns out the inclination to do such a thing makes even less sense than the story itself.”
Hello everybody, and welcome to Pesterfest!
(early logo, might change later)
Pesterfest is a brand new online Homestuck convention set to take place in Q2-Q3 2026. Think of what you expect from a convention - on topic panels, artists selling merch, fun events/activities, and meeting people with likeminded interests - but instead of being hosted in person, the event is entirely digital! This allows people from all over the world to experience the event and all it has to offer.
We hesitated on coming forward this early into management, but we're very curious about what you all would like to see out of this event. For this purpose, we have made an Early Interest Form! You can use it to make direct suggestions while contributing relevant data.
FILL OUT THE EARLY INTEREST FORM HERE
If you'd like to make a mark more directly, you can also join our volunteer team! We will be accepting two more team members with experience in any of the following:
- Social media or project management
- Video editing
- General art or design
Everyone over 15 is welcome. This means there will be (and already are) minors on the team, so if that makes you uncomfortable, I'd encourage you to refrain from contacting us further.
For the rest of you, our DMs are wide open! You may also use them to ask questions, however we would prefer you use our askbox instead.
But that out of the way, this is all you'll see from us for now. We estimate we'll have more to show you by December at the latest... stay tuned!
I’m part of this project. Stay tuned.
BEFORUS ANCESTORS. PT. 2
All written and drawn by Andrew Hussie.
Tavros - The Treeaboo
A member of the Lost Weeaboos, who dwells in the trees. Another term for these trolls is Treeaboo, which he has claimed as his title. A common misconception about the Nitram legacy is they're based on Peter Pan, or the troll equivalent, Pupa Pan. But this is not true. Actually the Treeboo styled his themes and persona after Troll Robin Hood, who similarly dwelt in tree villages. But at some point there was a mixup, when Rufioh had a vision of his ancestor and thought he was LARPing as Pupa Pan, so he ran with the idea, and conflated "Lost Weeaboos" with the "Lost Boys" of the Pan myth. Actually the Lost Weeaboos had nothing to do with that, they're just weeaboos who live in trees.
Sollux - The Helpsman
A key part of Beforan society is emphasis on voluntary service, by using special abilities to assist with public works and infrastructure, like healthcare, energy production and such. Certain members of this force of volunteers are called "helpsmen", so that's his title. He's extremely enthusiastic about putting time in the power plant, using his telekinesis powers to boost the electric grid. He spends hours or sometimes days on end clutching the terminals with a huge smile on his face, thinking about the joy he is bringing to every troll enjoying his electricity. At some point due to a karmic chain of events, there is an accident that affected him quite negatively, but we don't need to talk about that.
Karkat - The Imposter
Because he has mutant red blood, he spent his life posing as a lime blood, because that's the caste he would have naturally fit into with his friend group growing up, but no one ever found out, even his friends. The lime bloods, a class that was hunted to extinction on Alternia because of their dangerous pyrokinetic powers, were not similarly hunted on Beforus. Instead they were put to work on public infrastructure, like other helpsmen. Very powerful pyrokinetics got tough jobs like melting huge amounts of ore to make steel, but extremely weak ones like the Imposter got stuck with menial jobs, like burning off trace amounts of excess gas in coal mines so it doesn't build up and explode. But because he didn't have any powers, he couldn't burn off the gas, so such a buildup did happen which led to a massive explosion, setting off the karmic chain of mishaps affecting this group. He was uninjured from the blast, because he left the mine long before the blast, ashamed of his lack of powers. He was arrested for negligence, was discovered to be an impostor, and was jailed for life. No one ever found out about his mutant blood because the government covered it up. He believed he should be a tragic martyr figure for being forced to live a lie, leading to deadly consequences, but his story was forgotten by time. Kankri learned of his ancestor in a vision, and tried to redeem the Vantas legacy by proudly wearing his blood color on his red sweater, and spent his life preaching perfect morality to everyone to bring honor back to his name.
Terezi - Songbird Sootnose
The Songbird is also a sort of helpsman, using her abilities to help with coal mining. Due to her great sense of smell, she played the role of a mine's "songbird", which is similar to the way canaries are used on Earth. A canary is brought deep in the mine, and if it stops singing and dies, that means there's too much gas and people need to evacuate. She uses her nose to detect gas, but an injury which started this karmic chain of events left her without a sense of smell, but she tried to keep songbirding anyway. When the Imposter allowed a massive buildup of gas, she couldn't detect it, and a huge explosion followed, rocking the neighborhood above, affecting a nearby powerplant manned by the Helpsman, a tree village housing the Rankmaid and Treeboo, and a hospital where the Lamplady was on her shift. The Songbird lost an arm and an eye in the blast, with the damage to her eye being done by a very specific piece of shrapnel... a stray coin in the mine. She decided to use it as an eyepatch so she could never forget her deadly mistake.
Gamzee - The Bland Highblood
On Beforus, clowns weren't invented yet, so most of the purple bloods were mimes, and delighted the other classes with their mute street performances. They considered it a sacred duty as members of the highest land dwelling class to entertain their lessers and bring joy to their lives. Kurloz resisted the tradition of swearing a vow of silence to honor this solemn duty, but terrible events conspired to finally make him honor it by sewing his mouth shut and becoming a freaky juggalo. The Highblood is an unusual designation because it's the only one that isn't 8 letters, it's 9. But that's because it isn't actually a formal title, more like a nickname that is commonly used. His title is Mummerer, which is just an old fashioned sort of mime. But this raises the question, did the Grand Highblood have such a title? Which of course he did, it was Murderer. But this was rarely used when describing him, because it was considered too... on the nose :o) ... Ok but seriously, it was sometimes, but got lost in the sauce due to what is referred to in clowny nomenclature as the "Abbott and Costello Effect" named after two confusing Earth clowns. Their humorous dialogue confuses words and names, like "Who's on first" means either asking who is on first, or stating a guy named Who is on first, so stupid shit like this would happen with purple bloods all the time, and people often thought "Murderer" was a literal descriptor, not a title. Also the Mummerer's name was Marcmarc, after the famous mime Marcel Marceau, which wasn't that confusing so people remembered his name. But the Grand Highblood's full title and name was Murderer Honkhonk, which REALLY tripped the Abbott and Costello effect, because any time a bunch of clowns get together, all they do is honk, so nobody can tell if they're talking about the Highblood. This led to a lot of stupid situations, and he has had literally thousands of people killed over such buffoonery involving his name.
Eridan - Zoologer Coolscar
Widely recognized as the kindest and most wonderful troll of this group. Dedicates life to rescuing stray, childless lusus, or ones which have been injured or are unfit for parenting in some way. There really isn't much else to say about Coolscar except they are hands down, the best character in Homestuck, bar none.
OFFICAL BEFORUS ANCESTOR DESIGNS! P.1
Drawn and written by Andrew Hussie.
Aradia - The Rankmaid
Her title is synonymous with "rotten girl" which means fujoshi, because thats what she is. She's the original author of the "How To Draw Manga" book Caliborn uses to become a great artist. She is a member of the "Lost Weeaboos" and hangs out in the tree forts with Tavros doing weeaboo stuff.
Nepeta - The Muckrake
She's a journalist who specializes in celebrity gossip, especially the romantic kind. She pens a column about which well known troll is in which quadrant with who. Receives much gossip from certain highbloods.
Kanaya - The Gardener
Tends to the gardens of the higher castes, and sculpts topiary into shapes which foreshadow unfathomable future events in other universes. Nobody has any idea what she's doing with these bushes, but think she's cooking anyway.
Vriska - Lamplady Swansong
She was blinded in a horrible accident involving a karmic chain of events. Lamplady is a Nightingale reference, but she also carries a lamp because shes on night shift as a nurse. She doesnt need the light to see, it's for her patients. On Beforus, cerulean bloods used their psychic powers more empathically than on Alternia, and were prone to being healers. She got the nickname Swansong because her patients tend to die due to her terrible luck.
Equius - E%emplar Danklook
As an indigo blood he has to set a good example for his lessers. He's exemplary, a sexy model citizen, but has a secret life in the voids of society. Nobody knows what this means, and nobody wants to.
Feferi - Shepherd Constern
Called Shepherd Constern, or just The Constern for short, but is more formally known as Her Imperilous Consternation. Consternation is a title due to the great worry and concern she has for her lessers, which she and all her ruling predecessors must take great responsibility for. Her hair is shaped like Gl'bgolyb and random trolls get stuck in it but she doesn't notice. Shepherd is her formal title, which is 8 letters per the ancestor convention on both Beforus and Alternia. However the corresponding title for the Condesce was never revealed. It was actually Winnower Condesce, which means someone who thins the herd, as opposed to taking care of it. But the Condesce viewed this title as cringe, and made it illegal to call her that.
