Little Grace is so very real to me. Cuz istg in that one scene where he walks into the room full of scientists and tries to leave and says 'I can't do it', Stratt (I think) says something along the lines of: 'c'mon, yes, let's go here, you're doing great.' in a really sweet voice.

That's a lil guy who just threwd up and wants a nap, not to talk to all these important people (annnd the man he called a "waste of carbon" sitting right up front definitely doesn't help xD) so Stratt has to coax him!!!

AND that scene where Grace is spinning in his chair and Stratt patting the back of his chair as her and Lokken (I dunno if thats supposed to be her but I'm pretending it is) are walking by?? That's a tiny Grace getting checked up on by Stratt 😭💖

(And SO many parts in the book just scream tiny Grace! Like all his pouting moments and how giddy he gets and his silly sayings, dats a baby boy!!)

For anybody not caught up: Tennessee just passed a new map that pretty much makes it so black neighborhoods have no power in local votes. Two things about this. While protestors were chanting "No Jim Crow", white Tennessee lawmakers were caught laughing on video. On top of this, Representative Justin Pearson and his brother KeShaun Pearson were arrested for trying to give their takes on the matter (which is not only their legal right but literally his job). If you give a shit about black people, help fight this. We can't allow a return to Jim Crow.

Once inside the chamber, Democratic representatives continued to stand together with arms linked.

They continued standing together with arms linked as votes were cast.

Democratic representatives take a group photo protesting the redistricting.

Rep. Justin Jones burns a photo of the Confederate flag with the words, We will not go back.

And stomps the ashes.

Additional information: State lawmakers have been gunning for Pearson and Jones nearly their entire terms. Most notably, in 2023, the House expelled them for participating in a protest at the Capitol. Their districts had to have special elections to have them reinstated.

Pearson is one of the plaintiffs of a lawsuit seeking an injunction against the redistricting.

The city most affected by the redistricting is Memphis, where locals are fighting against xAI's data center, which has been operating with very little oversight and is poisoning the people who live there. Here is a previous post on that with more information and more sources.

FUSSY BABY RYE WITH A SOLAR SYSTEM MOBILE ABOVE HIS PLAYPEN/CRIB. And it's the only thing that calms him down and it spins!! All the planets spin around the sun and its an older mobile so it even has pluto!!

Slightly older tot with glow in the dark stars (in real constellation shapes with stratt's help) on the ceiling above his bed !!

5-ish ryland pinning messy crayon doodles of planets and comets and alien spaceships to his big boy desk and workspace (amidst research on astrophage and space travel) and tucking a completed addition/subtraction worksheet into stratt's folder of important paperwork since his also has numbers on it!!

9-ish ryland and 13-ish stratt playing warrior cats after a meeting but he just wants to be a fox that makes star maps but stratt keeps trying to get him to be her clan's medicine cat apprentice

No matter the headspace, Grace's mind is always soothed and fascinated by space!!

When he's baby his mobile is probably like these:

(Soft felt and there's probably an added red line to show the Petrova line, Stratt's addition) if he's fussing all you have to do it twist the knob or flip the switch and Grace will instantly calm and watch with wide eyes as the planets spin!

When he's a bit older he def has those cool glow in the dark stars!!

They act as his nightlight, a constant light that he can look up at and point out the constellations as he lays in bed♡ (I bet he made up a constellation and called it the Strattla-major 🥺)

Older kiddo Grace loving to read and doodle about space! He has alllll the "kids guide to space" (which do go with him to every meeting and to the lab in case he gets bored/feels small) and oh my goodness, of course addition sheets go in the important files, numbers are numbers and Stratt needs them too!!

And oh my goodness 🥺🥺💖 Stratt isn't as lenient with Grace when he is in an older headspace when it comes to their Warrior Cat play xD She'll tell him his role in the clan and doesn't let him deviate too much (of course she miiiiight let his character do star mapping, IF he's healed the kittypet and the leader!)

(Also pretending that those glow in the dark stars are packed onto Hail Mary. Yes, he might be amongst the stars but...these are ones that can make him feel more at home♡)

“Eridians dislike earth because they abandoned Grace.” *Incorrect Buzzer Sound* ya missed the point of the story buddy! It’s not about someone being ‘bad’ it’s about the incredible power of love and that love being worth dying for!

Gimmie Eridians who are absolutely heartbroken to hear that humans where so desperate and so scared that they where willing to part with not just one Grace, there were three of them! Gimmie Eridians touched to find that the humans planned a way for their sacrifices to be as comfortable as possible. Gimmie Eridians who send earth a message saying “We know it must have hurt to send your heroes to die, but one made it and he’s safe here. We lost 22 good Eridians on the journey we would have lost 23 if not for your Grace.”

Give me humans sitting on Earth slowly coming to the conclusion that when we look up not only are we not alone, someone out there is alive because of one of us. That no matter what we think of ourselves a whole species thinks highly of us because we helped save the galaxy. Give me humans who figure out how to send a probe to Erid filled to the brim with messages for Grace and footage of a monument being raised that reads his name, his crews names, and then “in memory of the 22 Eridians who lost their lives on the journey to save the stars.”

Reasons my human has cried:

* New student, very small. Grace said it was pebble. Pebble is small Earth rock. Pebble likes name.

* He found out Eridians have no gender rules.

* Students brought him mineral sample. After he stopped crying he said he loves show-and-tell game. Human naming conventions oddly literal.

* I told him Earthsun grew bright.

* I took him up atop atmosphere bypass elevator to look at stars.

* He woke up from nap and found me still with him. I did not wait on his chest; he says I am heavy like “elephant” and he “couldn’t breathe.” I laid my arm over him instead, kept him close, feeling safe. He said “cuddle” was warm.

* Before class he heard younglings singing.

* He has plants in house from sprouts on ship. Plant grew “bud.”

* Engineers got seawater temperature right. He took off shoes and stood in water, sighing. He didn’t care about pants getting damp. Cried until shirt was also damp. Humans very endlessly wet.

* He missed “Doritos.”

* Adrian helped food scientists make taumoeba dried paste. Made it crunchy after heating. We fused it into triangle form. Told him it was Tauritos. That made him laugh-cry. Laugh-cry is rare and precious.

* He remembered Eridians have no gender rules.

* We made him celebration outfit. Used metals he calls pretty. He can see frequencies named “colorful” and “shiny.” These make humans happiest.

* I gave him hug when he wasn’t expecting it. Easier to hug close now with exosuit. Hug when Grace sitting down so he does not fall over.

* Told him to think long time, stay with me as long as he can.

Whatever you do, don't think about what happens to Grace's biodome after he dies. Don't think about it becoming a monument to the first inter-planetary friendship. Don't think about the generations of Eridian scientists who will visit it to learn about Earth and prepare for visits when they work out the whole space-travel thing outside of an extinction-level emergency.

Any whatever you do, do NOT think about the little Eridian schoolkids who go there on class trips and play in the water in their special exo-suits and listen to lessons that Grace pre recorded while he was still alive and become inspired to be biologists and astronauts and teachers themselves.

Don't imagine Rocky joining them, so that he can hear his old friend teaching children about the wonders of science once more and pretend, just for a moment, that he's still there with them.

Apparently a lot of people get dialogue punctuation wrong despite having an otherwise solid grasp of grammar, possibly because they’re used to writing essays rather than prose. I don’t wanna be the asshole who complains about writing errors and then doesn’t offer to help, so here are the basics summarized as simply as I could manage on my phone (“dialogue tag” just refers to phrases like “he said,” “she whispered,” “they asked”):

“For most dialogue, use a comma after the sentence and don’t capitalize the next word after the quotation mark,” she said.

“But what if you’re using a question mark rather than a period?” they asked.

“When using a dialogue tag, you never capitalize the word after the quotation mark unless it’s a proper noun!” she snapped.

“When breaking up a single sentence with a dialogue tag,” she said, “use commas.”

“This is a single sentence,” she said. “Now, this is a second stand-alone sentence, so there’s no comma after ‘she said.’”

“There’s no dialogue tag after this sentence, so end it with a period rather than a comma.” She frowned, suddenly concerned that the entire post was as unasked for as it was sanctimonious.
