Billy always drives. His car, his music, his rules. Eddie never really questioned it before, aside from sliding into the driver’s seat on occasion just to see Billy roll his eyes and flick cigarette ash at him. He doesn’t care to be behind the wheel, doesn’t like the unease that comes with being in control, doesn’t really trust himself with that kind of focus. His mind goes a mile a minute and quiets for brief seconds on a good day. Mostly he just likes staring out the passenger side window and telling Billy everything of interest he sees – did you catch that sign? how about that double rainbow? there’s so much farmland here, wonder if we could ride a horse – it’s all stupid shit that just comes to him easy. Billy likes it though.
Eddie can always see his half smile, a twitch of his lips, every time he turns the music down to interject his two cents. Sometimes Billy laughs sometimes, if they’re at a red light and it’s too bright outside to cruise through, Billy will spare him a glance and catch the giggle on Eddie’s lips with his own and it feels so good.
Even if they don’t talk about it.
Even if they’ve been doing this for the last five years with no end in sight.
Even if Billy’s the only one who has ever touched him like he’s something special. Not weird, or messed up, or ‘needing fixing’ nah, he’s just Eddie. It’s fine. It’s been fine.
Except now Eddie’s behind the wheel, grip tight, fucking flooring it because Billy’s laid out in the back seat with his shirt torn to shreds and his blood a kaleidoscopic mess pooling over fabric. It’s under Eddie’s nails, sticky against his palm, barely dry against his too dark jeans. He can’t see the sickening red, but he knows it’s there. Like he knows his heart is halfway drowned because Billy stopped talking back to him five minutes ago and every time Eddie’s gaze flickers to the rearview mirror, he swears Billy’s breathing is slow, slow, slow.
The hospital is in the next town over, between a stretch of land that holds a different kind of solution, so Eddie thinks screw it who needs modern medicine when you can just make a deal with the devil?
