Tbh the difference between Shep and Ryder is like the difference between Hawke and the Warden, right? The Warden cleans up the whole world’s mess, Commander “punched a Yahg in the face” Shepard cleans up the entire galaxy’s mess - both are largely considered to be competent, don’t give a fuck what you think, have large, slobbery sons, and ended up legends.

Meanwhile, you have the Patron Saints of Winging It, Hawke and Ryder, who try their best, but hang out with weirdos who themselves try hard but largely end up fucking things up even more, the end result usually being large swaths of the population either pissed off at the whole team, on fire, or both. 

My point is, we all idolize the former while having a special affection for the latter because…well, we pretty much ARE the latter.
