Hello, Lambert. Dirt under my shoe. Vile serpent borne under the blackest of moons. Your very presence is demeaning. Your mind, vulgar, and underdeveloped. Every waking moment I waste away in this prison of your vicinity is passed counting the seconds until I can be rid of you, dog. Were it not for the laws of this land, I would have slaughtered you.
I finished it! I'm still learning to color, but this is my first so fully colored drawing with markers. I had to fix the colors digitally because photo screwed it up. These are still not the right colors, but it looks acceptable.
The work never ended. Walls went up then needed to be filled with furniture that had to be built which required skilled workers that would need to be fed food that would need to be gathered and so on and so on. Nthanda would never admit out loud how tired she was but exhaustion had reached her bones weeks ago.
“Priestess, a royal messenger came to the door, we’ll be having a visitor.”
Nthanda grunted, a mixture of effort and frustration as she brought a hoe down into the dirt. This small plot of farmland was priority. Even if there was nothing to be done she wouldn’t want a sniveling noble on her land.
“Thank you, I’ll greet them at the door.” She sighed, setting the hoe against the rickety little fence built around the clearing.
It took longer than she liked to clean the mud from her fur. Her black robes settled heavily on her shoulders; smothering in the summer humidity. A pin shaped like the sun, placed at her shoulder, held the fabric in place.
The sleeping quarters weren’t far from the entry hall though she probably could have paced the journey a dozen times before the envoy even came into sight.
The hyena escorted through the church doors wore vibrant robes; body heavy with jewelry. She was younger than Nthanda visibly with dense spotting and her mask marking blazed to a star between her eyes. One of which was blue and the other as gold as the pin on Nthanda’s shoulder.
“Princess Adaora, it’s a pleasure to host you.” Nthanda stood strong, slightly taller than the younger. She would not bow in her church.
Her defiance went unnoticed.
The princess walked up to her, eyes wide and bright. Nthanda’s ears tilted back as Adaora came within a few steps of her and the younger seemed to remember herself, stopping.
“Apologies, Priestess Nthanda, I came here to meet you and got excited.” Adaora played with the excess string of beads hanging from her bracelet. Keen copper eyes caught the subtle tremble of her fingers.
“It happens to the best of us. Would you like to rest, we’re a long way from the empire.” She offered. There were a few complete rooms, none suitable for royalty but they were a church and as far as she was concerned they shouldn’t make considerations for them.
“No, I have something important to discuss with you,” Adaora paused, glancing at their surroundings for the first time. “Privately if possible.”
Nthanda was quiet for a moment. The church acted as an arm of the royals and her mission so far into Scrofa lands would be perfect for meddling. Hot blades licked at the inside of her ribs and she took a slow, careful breath.
“Of course, follow me.” Nthanda turned and gestured for the princess to follow her.
The office she brought the princess to is sparse, a desk, storage for documents and not much else. Adaora left her guards outside the door. Nthanda placed her palm on her desk, the wood course under her palm.
Adaora looked so hopeful, tail twitching eagerly.
“We’re sisters.”
Nthanda heard the words. She understood what they meant even. Yet they didn’t make any sense to her.
“We share a father.” Adaora offered when the silence became unbearable.
“Right,” Nthanda’s tongue felt thick in her jaws. “Well, that’s good to know but I have-”
“Please, you’re the only sister I have.” Nthanda’s ears tilted backwards when Adaora rounded the desk to stand closer to her. A fire seared behind her eyes.
“You have a mother, brothers and our father,” Her voice raised as Adaora shrank back. ”And you have the gall to ask for me as well.”
If Nthanda had ever been in the same room as their father she didn’t know it but she had met Adaora’s mother, had stood near the matriarch when her own mother was executed; had spoken to her when the Matriarch allowed her to survive and again when she had to give up her rank. That woman’s daughter coming to her decades later to ask for, what, time, attention, possibly some loving bond. The insult drove deep to her core.
“I… I suppose I am,” Adaora replied softly, looking nothing like the tyrant that bore her. “And I don’t intend to leave until I know you.”
Nthanda huffed.
“A room will be prepared for you and you’ll be put to work then since you plan to stay for so long, we have no use for idle hands.” Nthanda stepped away from her. She turned away from her sister; there was a soft sound, Adaora opening her mouth then closing it.
“If you would like to meet our father, I can arrange it… he hasn’t been himself in a long time, it’d be best to visit soon.” Adaora forced the words out, the admission making her grimace.
A silence stretched between them. Decades of tension held back with the thinnest twine was bound to Nthanda's shoulders.
I started this about a month ago when I saw some illustrations of some fantasy-inspired carousel horses, and thought I’d like to try and draw some dinosaur themed ones. I was going to post this yesterday, but a friend asked me to draw a Dilophosaurus for him, so I obliged.
I started off with the herbivores/ornithischians first since they’d be easier to translate design ideas, but luckily I found examples of all kinds of animals that have been turned into fancy carousel creatures- including a Dinotopia themed set, that too my knowledge wasn’t used, but was simply on display.
The dinosaur species are on the pictures if clicked on, but if that doesn’t work, or it doesn’t display we have:
Maiasaurus, Gallimimus, Pachycephalosaurus, Pachyrhinosaurus, Iguanodon, Lambeosaurus, Carnotaurus, Torvosaurus, Deltadromeus, Caudipteryx and Dilophosaurus.
