You were two months along when you and Jack were planning on taking a sabbatical together. It wasn’t like you didn’t wanna tell people, it was just the fact that you two were struggling to get pregnant. This time, you didn’t wanna get your hopes up.
“We are gonna miss you guys!” Lena said, hugging you, “Ugh you two are so lucky, enjoy North Carolina!”
“We will, you guys will see photos when we get back!” You promised.
“You sure you guys can function without me?” Jack joked as he packed his bag.
“Yes, remember? You just made me night shift attending.” Shen said proudly and Ellis rolled her eyes.
“We got this boss man.” Ellis promised, “Dream team will keep dreaming while you two are gone.”
“Wow thanks.” You joked, passing Jack your bag, “Miss you guys too.”
“Shut up, I’ll miss you most.” Ellis laughed, pulling you into a tight hug. You hugged back just as tightly as day shift came in.
“What’s the sad goodbye about?” Santos asked, walking in.
“The Abbot’s are taking a sabbatical and leaving us behind.” Robby said, squeezing Jack’s shoulder.
“You won’t miss me.” Jack joked, “I won’t be here to keep your ass in line.”
“Very funny.” Robby said, rolling his eyes, “But seriously you two, have fun. Bring me back salt water taffy.”
“Oh we have a list don’t worry.” You joked, hugging Santos.
“Who else am I going to be bugging during shift change?” Santos asked.
“Pick on Ellis for me.” You said with a smile, earning a scoff from Ellis.
“Glad I was able to catch the two of you before you left.” Dana said, coming up.
“Oh no, warden caught us.” Jack joked, hugging Dana.
“Straight to jail with the two of you.” Dana joked, pulling you in for a hug as well, “I am gonna miss the two of you. Three months without my favorite nurse and doctor combo.”
“Ouch!’ Robby joked, grabbing his chest, “I am no longer the golden child.”
“Never were Robinavitch.” Jack joked. He moved to stand in front of the nurses station, “Alright Night Shift, eyes on me!” Jack called out.
You and the rest of the remaining night shift stood around the nurses station, waiting to see what Jack would have to say. You and Ellis rested your head on the other.
“Alright, listen up!” Abbot said, “As you know, my wife and I are officially going on our sabbatical starting today. We will be gone for three months and in the mean time, Dr. Shen and Dr. Ellis along with Dr. Henderson and Dr. Mohan will be your night shift attendings while I am gone.” He explained, “With that being said, do not text me work related questions, if you do you will get removed off the gift list. I am not kidding.”
“What if we find a funny meme?” Shen asked and Jack sighed.
“John unfortunately I will never escape you.” Jack said, shaking his head.
“With that being said, you guys will be fine and don’t catch anything on fire, I seriously need some time alone with my wife.” Jack said, looking to you, “Seriously I would like to not repeat the honeymoon incident.”
You and Ellis snorted, remembering the honeymoon incident.
They had hired travel nurses and travel doctors to help out since so many people took off for you and Jack’s wedding. Someone had tried to pop popcorn in the microwave and caught the microwave on fire. While you and Jack were trying to enjoy the night after your wedding as husband and wife, aka Jack having you within a deep mating press. Mid fuck, his phone rang after a panicked intern called him which ended up with Jack, Shen, and Robby driving together to head to the ER. Nobody let Abbot live it down that he showed up with ruffled hair and a giant hickey on his neck. There even was a rumor that Robby and Abbot were having an affair because Robby also showed up with a hickey on his neck as well.
“Don’t worry Abbot, I know how to use a fire extinguisher.” Shen said proudly, “You can count on me.”
Jack chuckled to himself and shook his head, “Whatever you say. But seriously, you guys got this. We are the creatures of the night and we have seen it all. There is nothing we can’t handle. Put your hands in the middle and on the count of three we say Hoorah.” Jack said, putting his hands in the middle, “One… Two … Three.. HOORAH.”
“HOORAH.” Everyone repeated back and you suddenly felt your morning sickness coming in. While everyone was dotting on Jack, you snuck away to the closest private bathroom.
You found a bathroom with two stalls and made it to the open one and began throwing up in the toilet.
You heard someone move in the stall next to you. You froze, realizing you weren’t alone.
“You good?” Javadi asked quietly.
“Hey Javadi.” You said softly, “Thought I was alone. Did I interrupt your TikTok?”
“Yea but it is okay.” Javadi said, “I can redo it.”
“Just like give me a second, okay?” You said, puking again.
“Take your time.” Javadi said, “It sucks you are getting sick before your sabbatical.”
Sick. You can fake that.
“Yea hopefully Jack doesn’t catch it.” You lied, wiping your mouth, “Listen, keep up your TikTok’s. I like watching them.”
“What?” Javadi said, clearly taken aback, “You watch them? Please tell me Dr. Abbot doesn’t.”
“No, Dr. Abbot can’t even work TikTok.” You said with a laugh, another lie. Abbot ran a faceless workout account, sharing workout tips while flexing.
“Good.” Javadi said, “Thank you.”
“Of course, I’ll see you when I get back Javadi.” You said, soon leaving the bathroom.
Jack was waiting outside the bathroom with a worried look on his face, “Are you okay?” He whispered, “Please tell me you didn’t lose our baby.”
“Just morning sickness, our little bug is ok.” You promised, looking down at your stomach. While you just looked bloated, you and Jack both knew your little one was growing inside.
“I think it’s time for us to go.” He whispered, leading you to his truck, “Just me, you, and lil bug.”
Soon the two of you headed out to his truck, excited to kick off your sabbatical together.

North Carolina was absolutely beautiful. Jack had rented a beach cottage on the coast near a town called Duck so you spent your days either lounging around the house, exploring the coast, or just enjoying the time you had as husband and wife before you became mom and dad.
You and Jack were into your second month in of the sabbatical. It was an early morning, the light just barely peaking through the window. You were fast asleep in one of Jack’s old shirts, arm over your eyes.
Meanwhile, Jack was wide awake. His hand absently rubbing your bump while he just watched you sleep. “Good morning little one.” He whispered, moving to be closer to your bump, “I’m your daddy. Your mama is fast asleep so I figured I’d get some alone time.”
He felt a small flutter against his hand and he smiled softly, “You were supposed to have two siblings.” Abbot whispered, “But I think your siblings hand picked you just for us. We are gonna love you so much.” He continued to rub circles on your stomach, “And you are gonna be so loved by so many people. You have an uncle Robby, an uncle Shen.” He whispered, “Aunt Dana, Aunt Ellis, and Aunt Lena. Everyone is gonna love you, I promise.”
You started to slowly wake up, hearing Jack’s voice. “Jackie?” You mumbled, starting to stretch.
His hand stilled on your stomach, “Sorry baby, was having a little chat with our little one.” He explained softly, “I think we should see our little one.”
“I agree.” You said with a smile, “Let’s see what they’re up to today.”
Abbot grabbed his portal ultrasound device and a bit of ultrasound gel. He moved it around on your stomach and pulled up the app on his phone, “Come on little Abbot, where are you?” Abbot mumbled, moving the wand around until he found your baby.
“Hey little one.” You cooed as Abbot continued to move the wand.
The image was pretty clear for a portal ultrasound.
“What do you think they are gonna be?” Abbot whispered, “I really want a little girl but I’ll love a little boy too.”
“I’d love either.” You whispered, watching the ultrasound, “I just wish I could hold them.”
“Me too.” Abbot whispered, “I can’t wait.”
You and Abbot laid together, watching the little ultrasound on his phone. You both couldn’t wait to hold little Abbot in your arms.

“We didn’t tell anyone we were expecting, did we?” Abbot said, staring ahead.
“I didn’t tell a soul.” You admitted with a sigh, “This is gonna cause an uproar.”
“Oh yea. Let’s face the music.” Abbot said, rubbing a hand over his face.
It was your first shift back from your sabbatical together and you were definitely showing at five months pregnant. You two had forgotten to tell anyone in the Pitt that you two were gonna be parents and you knew people were gonna raise hell.
You two both got out of the car, Abbot moving to help you out.
“I feel like a whale.” You mumbled, tugging on the jacket you had stolen from Jack.
“See this is why I’ve practiced my whale mating call.” Jack stated, “Hold on, lemme try.”
“Jack no!” You laughed, grabbing the gift bag. It was too late, Jack was already making whale noises.
“BaahhhhBY.” He began and you smacked his chest, laughing uncontrollably.
“Stop! I’m gonna pee!” You laughed, “Please Jackie!”
“wHY?” He called out, laughing himself.
You started to laugh again, having to lean on a car, “JACKIE!” You cackled.
“Alright, we are actually gonna be late.” He said with a laugh, offering his hand.
You took it and the two of you walked into the ER together. The jacket you had on covered your bump fairly well so you knew you were safe for now.
“Look who’s back!” Dana called out, “The Mr. and Mrs. Night shift are back!”
“Unfortunately.” Jack said with a chuckle, setting down your bags, “But we bring bearing gifts and also, admin wanted me to announce our newest team member.”
“They hired someone for nights?” Robby asked, “Abbot, as chief of emergency room, no one ran this by me.” He explained.
“Absolutely they did not.” Abbot said with a smile, “Which is why I’m so excited to announce this.”
You came to stand next to your husband, baggy jacket still on.
“I would like you guys to meet future Pitt employee baby Abbot!” Jack said as you took off your jacket, revealing your bump, “Pending start date in 4 months, if they cooperate.” Jack said with a smile, his hand resting on your bump.
It got dead quiet in the ER as everyone took this information.
“OH MY GOD!” Ellis screeched, coming over to hug you, “I love you, but I am so angry you didn’t tell me sooner!”
Robby laughed and came over to hug Jack, “You cocky son of a bitch.”
“The cockiest.” Abbot said, “Your new title is Uncle Robby.”
Robby laughed, running a hand over his beard, “You know, I’ll take it!”
“What is the big hubbub? We got patients people!” Lena and Dana started.
“Wow Dana, you aren’t gonna meet your future employee?” Jack joked, motioning for your stomach.
Lena dropped her clipboard, “MY BABY IS HAVING A BABY!!” Lena screeched, coming to hug you.
“OH MY SWEET BABY JESUS!” Dana screeched, the three of you hugging, “Sweetie you are glowing.”
You laughed, trying not to cry, “You guys are gonna make me cry! Honestly!”
“Do we know the gender?” Dana asked and you looked at Jack.
“We do and we are doing an announcement soon.” Jack said, “Don’t start buying baby clothes yet.”
“I’m gonna be an uncle!” Shen squealed, practically tackling Jack.
“Jesus- CHRIST!” Abbot yelped, catching Shen.
“Wait so you were pregnant in the stall.” Javadi spoke up.
“Yes, I was two months along when you caught me.” You said with a laugh, “We weren’t ready to announce it.”
“Wow, you look big for five months.” Ogilvie stated and everyone grew silent.
“Oh my god!” Santos laughed, leaning on the nurses station.
“I-I know.” You whimpered, “I-I can’t help it.”
“Hey, we got new scrub jackets. You can pick out yours.” Ellis said, guiding you to the break room. She shot a glare at Ogilvie as they walked towards the break room.
“Do not fucking say that to a pregnant person ever, especially my wife.” Abbot snapped, “You are lucky I am in a good mood.”
“Sorry Dr. Abbot.” Ogilvie stuttered, suddenly finding a way to busy himself.
Everyone started to settle from the excitement and Abbot rounded up his night crew for shift change.
“Their figs so like super comfy.” Ellis said, guiding you into the break room.
“Oh my god! I had no idea you were pregnant!” McKay said with a warm smile. She was in the break room as you two stepped in.
“Five months.” You said, still trying not to cry, “But Ogilvie stated I looked bigger.”
“Because you are carrying life.” McKay said, “Don’t listen to him.”
“Thank you.” You said, “You are an angel in human form McKay.”
“Eh I try, let’s find you a scrub jacket.” McKay said, helping you and Ellis find yourself a jacket.
Not long after you guys started looking, Abbot stepped in.
“How are we? Did we find a jacket?” Abbot asked softly and you nodded, tugging on your new jacket.
“Yea, I got you one.” You said, passing Abbot one.
“Thank you baby.” Abbot said with a smile.
Ellis and McKay headed out, leaving you two alone.
He tugged his on and came over to hug you, “Are you okay?” He whispered, gently kissing your head.
“I’m okay.” You whispered, “Just let it get to me.”
“I know baby, it’s okay. I took care of it.” He whispered, rubbing his hand on your stomach,“But how’s my girl doing?”
You looked down at your bump and smiled softly, “She’s active.” You whispered, gently putting your hand over his.
“Be good to mama, okay?” He said, pressing a kiss to his palm then to your stomach.
You smiled as you felt the baby kick his hand, “See she loves her daddy.”
“I love her too, but the ER calls for the three of us. Are you good to work?” He asked and you nodded.
“I’m good, thank you baby.” You said with a smile.
“I love you. Both of you.” Abbot whispered, pecking you on the lips.
“I love you too.” You whispered against his lips.
The two of you soon headed into the ER, falling back into your old routines.
