Composer Hans Zimmer Talks About Crowd Sourcing Chants for the Score of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
With a career that spans three decades and encompasses well over 100 films, Hans Zimmer is one of the film industry’s leading and most influential composers. This weekend, Collider got the opportunity to chat with him at the junket for Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, and he talked about his work and approach to finding the score for each project.

Crowd Sourced Choir Sings Over Internet With the Power of 2000 Voices (video)
The internet has quickly become the place where everyone’s voice can be heard…literally. The Virtual Choir project collected 2052 self-made recordings of people performing the same song and then recombined these efforts into one collaborative work of art freely available on YouTube. Check out the entire performance of Sleep in the video below. It’s absolutely stunning to watch and hear.

What is Crowdsourcing?
What is crowdsourcing? I didn’t know how to answer that question until 30 minutes ago when I Googled the term. And I learned that I have willingly taken part in crowdsourcing several times. Most recently, I obediently cast my vote for a co-worker’s 2-year-old to be the next face of Baby GAP. Perhaps you remember Netflix’s $1 million challenge to innovate a better movie prediction algorithm for the company’s website? That is another (much better paying) instance of crowdsourcing.
Today’s infographic takes a look at the practice of crowdsourcing projects: what it means, where the term originated, and how it works. The pros and cons of the technique are also lightly discussed. Based on my small experiences, it seems like a great idea for both companies and for consumers if used fairly. A company can get essential input from their target audience, and that audience is given a voice and the opportunity for recognition. However, there is a legitimate argument against crowdsourcing. The infographic describes this argument perfectly as one of its cons: “Crowdsourcing drives down the market value of once high-priced professional products and services allowing amateurs to compete in the market but closing out trained professionals.” Click here to continue reading...
As great as human generated transcriptions are, we can't help but find pure entertainment from certain Google Voice transcription bloopers.
Read Why One Professional Prefers Human Transcription Over Voice Recognition

Based on the principles of aerodynamics, a bumblebee shouldn’t be able to fly. Yet, it does. Similarly, using physicians with decades of advanced and specialized training and education to edit text reports on a hardwired computer would seem as awkward as a bumblebee – yet voice recognition works, and it’s become a mainstay of many radiology practices. However, the traditional transcribing workflow has much elegance, ease and efficiency to commend it.
While I certainly don’t begrudge my colleagues who effectively use voice recognition, here are a few of the issues many authors and I have with this process.
Transcribers can correct simple errors of binary confusion like left/right, centimeter/millimeter, man/woman, no mass/mass, vertebral body levels. These errors easily slip by an author rereading his own work, but stand out clearly to a reader, whether a typist or a clinician customer. Transcribers can save us from our Rick Perry moments.

Crowdsourcing is Changing Science
How Crowdsourcing is Changing Science
By Gareth Cook 11/11/11
A few months ago, the papyrologists tried something bold. They put up a website, called Ancient Lives, with a game that allowed members of the public to help transcribe the ancient Greek at home by identifying images from the papyrus. Help began pouring in. In the short time the site has been running, people have contributed 4 million transcriptions. They have helped identify Thucydides, Aristophanes, Plutarch’s “On the Cleverness of Animals,” and more. Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer plans to utilize crowdsourcing for the soundtrack of the comic book movie, The Dark Knight Rises.
Zimmer is using crowdsourced audio as a way to get fans excited to be part of a cinematic event while simultaneously catering to the movie's needs. A rather brilliant move.
