After taking a couple of sips of his coffee, Oliver looked at down at the beverage and frowned. It certainly didn’t taste as good as before and he was confused for a moment, wondering if he came to the right place. He looked around, but everything seemed the same. “How is it that within a couple of months of my absence this coffee now tastes like phlegm?” He muttered out loud.

“Maybe you’re just getting old and losing your sense of taste,” he suggested with a look of amusement on his features. “Try ordering something different. Maybe your usual isn’t as good as you thought it was.”

“What can I say? I’m a tad superstitious. I believe the phrase jinxes the whole situation,” Anna replied, shrugging, “Probably somewhere but I imagine we’ll miss the action. If only there was just a street seller.”

“Doesn’t knocking on wood reverse the whole jinxing bit?” Spencer quirked a brow. “Unfortunately I don’t see a single one. Normally the street sellers I spot are selling potions or pumpkin juices.”

“I have fun but that’s not fun. Petty teenage drama is not my idea of fun. Drinking whiskey away from students is my idea of fun. Curling up with a good book is my idea of fun. Not this,” Callista replied. However, she had always been seen as the stern teacher so it wasn’t the first time she’d been called a buzzkill.

“Alright, alright– I think I get the message,” Spencer replied as the blonde kept listing things off. “What are you doing out here then if you’d rather be curled up reading?”

“Oh I do trust it, but I don’t trust anything else,” Elias replied honestly. He was being a realist and it was better to be safe than sorry. Besides, he was completely comfortable with watching others take the risk. 

“Must get lonely and boring sometimes,” he jested, although perhaps it could be considered a deeper cut. “Are you at least up for another round of drinks? We can sit someplace else,” Spencer finally said.

She smiled at Spencer fondly, shaking her head as if amused. “Everyone makes mistakes,” she pointed out. ‘Not me obviously, but not everyone can be perfect,” she then joked. Yasemin thought about the answer for a moment before she spoke up. “People do like being fashionably late. And they do have lives outside the club,” she looked at him pointedly.

“No it seems that they can’t,” he laughed lightly in response to her. “Ah so that’s your theory? Everyone else is leaving far more interesting and less punctual lives while I sit here pushing poker chips?” Spencer chuckled once more, but if only to mask the fact that he knew that was precisely the case.

“I know what you’re doing,” Seung observed. “And you know it would’ve worked if I as tipsy. But since I’m not, I’m going to play it safe,” he then added, shrugging. “Because you like the colour or..?” He raised an eyebrow in question.

“Your loss, bud. You can’t win big if you always play it safe,” he pointed out with a shrug. “It’s more of an old habits die hard thing,” Spencer explained after Seung’s question. “My first ever bet was on black and I haven’t changed my choice since,” he admitted.

Penelope gave her brother a scathing look as he seemed to hand his money over so easily, especially when it was such an insane ploy like Wizard Chess. “Why do you even care who wins? I wasn’t aware you were so into this game.” She grumbled. “I don’t think anything bad would happen, I just think that I’d be wasting money on something I don’t care about.”

“There’s a certain satisfaction in getting something right, you know?” Spencer justified, although it was clear from the look on his sister’s face that her mind wouldn’t be changed. “Well what do you usually waste your money on then, Penn? New clothing and nail appointments?”

“I generally don’t enjoy the phrase what’s the worst that could happen but if I ever implied I wasn’t interested in what is gonna happen next, I have to apologise,” Anna replied, “Because I am very much interested. I’m very invested. We may need some popcorn though.”

“Had one too many bad experiences with it?” he wondered when the woman said she wasn’t fond of the phrase. “Popcorn? Can’t say that came to mind for me but why not, right? Do you know anywhere nearby that’s got some on hand?” Spencer asked in a teasing manner.

“Alright then– suit yourself,” he shrugged, raising his hands up to assure that he was going to drop it. “Do you do anything for fun? Or do you just devote your time to living the life of a buzzkill?”

“Are you really trying to play your tricks on me?” Yasemin asked with a small smile. She sat down on one of the empty chairs  next to Spencer and looked around curiously. “Slow night?” She raised an eyebrow at him.

“A little foolish of me, I’ll admit,” he chuckled back as Yasemin joined her at the table. “Unfortunately so. Is there some sort of grand event I’m totally clueless to that everyone’s attending instead? Although forget that, because you’d probably be in attendance too, but instead you’re here with me and these empty chairs– why is that, Yas?”

“That is the exact phrase that people say before the worst genuinely happens,” Electra replied, ever the pessimist, “I could get fired, is the worst that could happen and I like my job.”

“Ah, what an optimist you are,” he remarked sarcastically. “I don’t know if you’d lose your job over this, but suit yourself. Playing it safe is so boring most of the time.”

“No, Hawthorne. I am not,” Merle shot back. “It is entirely unethical to bet on the outcome of a trial especially when we are members of the Wizengamot. The fact you don’t take your job seriously and still are allowed to be a member makes me question the integrity of this whole institution.”

“Just because I like to have a little fun does not mean I do not take my job seriously,” he pointed out to the woman, not too bothered by the fact that she seemed angry with him. “You can’t pretend you don’t try and guess the outcome of a trial before we go in. Or even mid-hearing. It’s fun to try and guess how things will go and if evidence or testimonies will be enough to completely derail things in a different way,” Spencer responded simply.

“I’m not the slightest bit curious as to what could happen next.” Scorpius countered as he looked to the other. “I have no interest in winning, but I have a greater interest in placing a stupid bet and losing money that I’ve earned.” He continued. “So that’s the worst that could happen, I guess I’m not much of a gambling man. But by all means, go ahead.” He told the other with a gesture of his hand.

“Not a Ravenclaw then I’m assuming,” he teased. “I see, I see,” Spencer then nodded as the younger male continued to explain himself. “If you’re not a gambling man, what kind of man are you then?” he wondered curiously, twirling a Galleon in between his fingers.

“I already know what happens and I also know it wouldn’t end too well for me. Humour me though, what would you bet on if you were me?” Seung raised an eyebrow, looking at the other expectingly. 

“And here I thought that nothing held you back. That you liked proving people wrong and all that,” he replied with a vague gesture of his hands. “I’d bet on black. I always bet on black,” Spencer said without much hesitation. Sometimes it had worked in his favor, other times it had not.

“Oh I don’t know, I could lose my money,” Elias replied drily. While he risked a lot every single day, his galleons were something he took great care of. He was tempted, sure, but over the years he had learnt when to give up before he lost everything.

“Not if you’re smart with who you bet on,” he winked at his friend, not concerned about the consequences as most probably would be. “Don’t you trust your own gut?”

“Why don’t you place your bet first?” Melora challenged the other. She had dealt with scammers so she was cautious whenever someone tried to goad her into doing something. She was a curious being, yes, but she also had street-smarts and knew when to take the risk.

“You don’t trust me very much– do you?” he chuckled, although he could understand her hesitation. “While I’m used to ladies going first, fine,” Spencer nodded, throwing a few galleons onto the table. “There’s mine.”
