Neither of us knew it at the time, but technically when my mom told me I couldn't watch The Matrix back in 1999, it was transphobia

What happened with The Matrix was actually far funnier than "you can't watch it": my parents watched it, and told me it was "too dark" to let me watch it. BUT they said the fight at the end (Neo vs Agent Smith in the train station) was too cool to keep me from watching it, so they let me watch JUST THAT PART, completely out of context.

Wacky.

Anyway I am and always have been a pirate who doesn't believe in authority figures, so I had "borrowed" the tape from them overnight and duplicated it onto one of my own VHS tapes, so of course I could watch the whole thing on my own time. But as far as their Official Parenting rules said, I was only allowed to watch like the last 10 minutes of The Matrix

This is funny to me because I was 12 when the matrix was released and my film buff dad was so jazzed for it he took me and my brother to see it in theaters and was so proud he decided to do that because he instantly rated it in his top 10 and was happy he showed his kids some good culture

My mom did not enjoy it as much because “there were too many guns” however

Nice! My dad did that with me when Jurassic Park came out. I was only 9 and not in the practice of seeing PG-13 movies (actually I think everything I'd seen up until then was G rated, since usually we'd go see films with all my younger siblings too, so a lot of Disney cartoons), but my dad was like "this film is too awesome for you not to see it, so come along and don't tell your mom".

(Jewish) Pride Month Day 3: Ezra Furman

Ezra Furman is an American indie rock musician, singer and songwriter. She has released 7 solo albums, 3 solo EPs, 3 albums with her previous band, Ezra Furman and the Harpoons, and has worked on the soundtrack for the Netflix show "Sex Education". They are Jewish, bisexual, and a trans woman. Their queer and Jewish identities are central to their work. She was previously enrolled in rabbinical school but dropped out and stated she had decided to lead and empower Jewish people through art instead. Their unapologetic expression of queerness and Jewishness has made them an icon to queer Jews in the indie/alt rock scene.

*Furman uses both she/her and they/them pronouns. She also goes by Liz but has continued to use Ezra as her professional name.
