I’m just…I just don’t understand how anybody could be upset with Black folks not standing when the U.S. National Anthem is playing. What do y'all want us to do, sing along and be merry and grateful to be in the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Let’s be clear. The Star Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key, a wealthy Marylander (a lawyer by profession) whose wealth was gained through slave labor as well as through his professional endeavors, as he wasknown to take on cases involving slave owners and enslaved persons. Not only was Francis Scott Key was a slave owner and an anti-abolitionist, he was also a key member of the American Colonization Society.

But we should be cool with singing his lyrics right?

Cut that shit out. Know damn well that Black folks in this country have a very distinct positionality with regard to citizenship. Know damn well that this country has never truly loved Black folks. 

1619 First enslaved Africans arrive in Virginia 1776 Declaration of Independence declares “all men are equal” except of course of you were indigenous or African/of African descent 1787 Three-Fifths Compromise in which it is agreed that enslaved Africans are to be counted as 3/5 of a human being in determining state populations 1793 Fugitive Slave Law is enacted by Congress which allows slave owners to to cross state lines to capture enslaved Africans that have escaped from their property. 1831 Nat Turner’s Insurrection 1863 Emancipation Proclamation 1865 Thirteenth Amendment abolishes slavery “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

-Ushering in new iterations of enslavement, bondage, and disenfranchisement of Black folks in this nation-

I could go on and on pulling from this nation’s economic, legal, social, political, religious, cultural, diplomatic, and intellectual history and again and again point out the anti-Blackness of this nation. It runs so deep.
