Ok I love this???
"baptise me in hot dog water"
Hot dog water - there's a Tumblr post out there I've seen saying hot dog water is the opposite of holy water, due to the fact that a single drop of it will contaminate what it touches. I assume this was partly inspired by this allusion but who knows for sure.
Also the the idea of holy water as inhuman and cleaning vs hot dog water as the remains of feeding someone - often a child - and entirely human. It may be dirty and I do not want it on me but God hot dog water has some memories. You will not wash away my sins. They're mine. Also, anyone can make hot dog water but holy water is refined, restricted (yes anyone can make it in an emergency but lay people are restricted from it)
"you and I both know"
Unlike baptism for babies, this one is done between two people who are both aware of what is happening. The one receiving the baptism gives the orders about what they want to happen. The giver and receiver are portrayed as equals. They are equally aware of their humanity.
"the holy stuff won't take"
Ooof heartbreaking, amazing line. Raises so many questions. What does it mean when the water "takes"? What has the receiver done that makes them unfit for holy water? Or, what has the holy water done that makes it to weak to help, to be a part of your life?
The poem as a whole - I love the lack of capitalization. It adds a sort of intimacy to the poem, and the statement from the speaker. The high words "baptise" and "holy" being offset by "take" and "hot dog". Also "hot dog water" vs "holy stuff." The cadence! I would lick it.
I love the serious analysis, and I think I find it persuasive.
This also sheds a lot of light on some plot points in Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated.
Not to turn this into another house full of chintz, but I'mma fuck this poem on the floor.
Meter
There are two readings of the poem's meter that I immediately identify, the first is how I'd want to read it, and the second is how a normal person would probably read it, but both make the same point.
In my interpretation (left), the first line is four wholely irregular feet: an iamb into a dibrach into two trochees; The second line is two trouches into a hanging stressed syllable; And the third line is three iambs.
In the more normal interpretation(right), the first line and second line are six trochees all together plus that hanging syllable in 'knowing' which transitions the poem to iambic trimeter.
And look at the interesting result of that laid bare:
In English poetry there's a tradition, all other things being equal, that iambs are considered the sophisticated foot with trochees often being contrasted as the vulgar or common foot.
The vulgar in specificity "hot dog water" is put in trochee, while the respectably vague "the holy stuff" is afforded iambs. Without the poet having thought of the stress things the pattern actively, this incapulation of the English poetic tradition is astounding. Especially when you consider the
Chiasmus
Chiasmus is a figure of rhetorical construction, in which two pairs of ideas are laid across each other, A B B A. It's one of the more popular figures of rhetoric and if you're looking for it you'll see it everywhere.
In the most literal sense, it's about repetition; but, you can apply it more liberally to ideas, thoughts, or in this case, parts of speech:
The nouns and verb pairs in the first and third lines crossover each other. They are in chiasmus. Structurally, the inversion makes the poem feel more solid, while still furthering emphasizing the contrast between the idea of hot dog water and the holy stuff.
Opening with a command and closing with a result.
Find someone who will learn a language for you just to say the shittiest pick up line with it.

Bonus:
I love the idea of Cullen falling in love with a romanced inquisitors magic. Falling in love with the way his tea is always remains hot for hours after it'd brought to him. Falling in love with the way she opens the curtains with a wave of her hands. Falling in love with how she makes sparks fly from her fingertips to make children laugh in Skyhold. Falling in love with her intricately carved staff. Falling in love with her protective barriers she casts automatically around those she cares about at the slightest hint of danger (the time someone dropped something in the war room and all the advisor were suddenly clocked in one springs to mind). Falling in love with the way she moves when she practices magic with her specialist trainer. Just...Falling in love with the magic as much as he loves any other part of her.
I redid this older comic I made for my storytelling class based on this post. Have some cute wlw love in your day.
It’s hard, if I had more free time I could make it so pretty, this is what I could throw together for the assignment.

We would absolutely love to see your idea for yue!joins the gang during season 2 and 3 outfits.
-screech because i didn’t expect people actually asking- okay, okay... OKAY! first, all in good fun and just concept or ideas! so, the outfits are influenced by Inuit, Mongolia, china (... i failed that one ;;; ) and Thai and India. so there are mistakes and if they are really bad please tell me.
i am being honest here... i just really really really wanted to try out and figure out how yue could hide her hair in the fire nation... (the answer is simply a veil) and... i did outfits for the SWT family here. and i wanted to see how i could push yue’s design in my style... also... ARCHER YUE! i mean obviously sokka will teach her how to use a boomerang. but... but archer yue! she could be on appa and shoot at people!
--- EDIT 17. March, 2021--- @pidgeapodge pointed out my spelling mistake for "Qing Dynasty" thank you for pointing it out!
Someone PLEASE tell the Witch-King of Angmar that this little hobbit genuinely thinks it’s anyone’s guess whether or not he’s literate. PLEASE.
To be fair, it is anyone’s guess. Literacy is not some sort of baseline qualification for kingship. Even if Angmar was a realm that put great stock in the written word (and we don’t know that), that doesn’t mean every single inhabitant is literate. Literacy is a specialist skill. Kings can afford to hire (or, in the case of Angmar, enslave) specialists if they need them.
Incidentally, if the Black Riders can read, we do not know whether they can read Shire-style Westron. Maybe they just know Sauron’s adapted Black Speech Tengwar mode and a little Sindarin on the side. WHO KNOWS.
Besides, at this point Frodo doesn’t even know who and what the riders are. For all he knows, they could be trained monkeys or enchanted clouds. He doesn’t even know if they’re sapient.
Also, I’m pretty sure at one point it is mentioned that the riders use their horses to see (just don’t remember whether this is before or after the above quote).
If that is indeed the case, and is mentioned prior to this scene, it is not unreasonable to assume that the riders cannot read by virtue of not being able to see the lettering.
Now picturing a rider holding a note in front of their horse and trying to make sure it doesn’t bite it
You know what fantasy writing needs? Working class wizards.
A crew of enchanters maintaining the perpetual flames that run the turbines that generate electricity, covered in ash and grime and stinking of hot chilies and rare mushrooms used for the enchantments
A wizard specializing in construction, casting feather fall on every worker, and enchanting every hammer to drive nails in straight, animating the living clay that makes up the core of the crane
An elderly wizard and her apprentice who transmute fragile broken objects. From furniture, to rotten wood beams, to delicate jewelry
A battle magician, trained with only a few rudimentary spells to solve a shortage of trained wizards on the front who uses his healing spells to help folks around town
Wizarding shops where cheery little mages enchant wooden blocks to be hammered into the sides of homes. Hammer this into the attic and it will scare off termites, toss this in the fire and clean your chimney, throw this in the air and all dust in the room gets sucked up
Wizard loggers who transmute cut trees into solid, square beams, reducing waste, and casting spells to speed up regrowth. The forest, they know, will not be too harsh on them if the lost tree’s children may grow in its place
Wizard farmers who grow their crops in arcane sigils to increase yield, or produce healthier fruit
Factory wizards who control a dozen little constructs that keep machines cleaned and operational, who cast armor to protect the hands of workers, and who, when the factory strikes for better wages, freeze the machines in place to ensure their bosses can’t bring anyone new in.
Anyway, think about it.
Construction wizards to turn back time to root out wood worm and strengthen old buildings.
A wizard tailors who transmutes cloth into fully made clothes without seems and leaving behind no scraps
A wizard who works in public transit, timing out teleports with detailed schedules, time magic, and enchanted communications, sending dozens of people to far away cities for a day or work or leisure
A team of wizard gardeners tend to trees grown far outside their native range, and ideal climate, encircled with runes and fed potions to grow none the less
A wizard sits in their office in the aqueduct, re-casting the spells that allow its precious water to flow to the city uphill
A wizard fisher casts water repelling spells on the sailors and the stairs, keeps the hoist on the anchor from rusting, casts balls of heat that keep everyone warm below decks. Their real job is to herd fish together so they can be caught in single huge nets, and keep them cold as the boat returns to land.
There are so many possibilities outside of “stodgy academic who wears ugly robes” and “Very good holy man who helps everyone and the fact they’ve never had a job is never brought up” and “evil wizard toiling away on great evils in his evil tower in the evil country.”
Wizards who come out and ward your home for you, like the magical equivalent of a home security system.
I have not seen enough people talking about how the 20th anniversary of Fellowship of the Ring is in like a month
today's the day y'all
saw a post that was like "oh the Addams Family would 100% accept a trans child!" and honestly i agree, for sure, but i don't think that "acceptance" is the only thing they'd do.
it would be a severe under-approximation of how much the Addams embraced differences to say that they would only have accepted their trans child, because i'm absolutely certain that the Addams would throw a goddamn party for this child.
i mean, imagine this. you grew up in the Addams household, and maybe they weren't perfect. maybe they didn't know much better than to call you by the pronouns associated with your assigned gender at birth. but look- Debbie was a sloppy pastel mess of a serial killer but your family had been ready to love and love her forever if she had only let them, Margaret was and still is pink and frilly, but she married Cousin Itt, who somehow exists by the way, while nobody in your family questions how or why you are related. and sure, you don't really fit in at school, but that seems more like an "everyone else" problem more than a you problem.
but something else about you seemed a little weird to you, it always had. even for your family who you already know is (wondrously) different from everyone else, but you always felt like even you were different in a way that the other members of your family wasn't.
Uncle Fester makes a comment one day about how he wasn't particularly one or the other kind of sexuality or gender and the family nods along, and cheer for him when he professes to be in love with the Moon. something in you clicks. but you're not quite sure what.
"Mother," you ask Morticia one day, "what did Uncle Fester mean when he says he's not one particular gender or the other?"
"It means he is your Uncle Fester, dear." she replies without hesitation, continuing to spritz the poison ivy with water. you nod and wander off to find your siblings. something in you clicks again, but you're not quite sure what.
in school, the other kids are mean but your sister Wednesday is meaner. you both set fire to the football uniform of one of your biggest bullies- the rich boy who got away with everything because daddy could pay his way out- for calling you and her a "freaky goth bitch" and "what even are you anyway" and to "make up your mind," which ended with a slur, which was the breaking point for the both of you.
he is laughed out of that school for his shrieking, petty response to being hosed down by a faculty staff with a fire extinguisher, and you sit on a tree with her, enjoying an entire block of cheese.
"What does that word he called me mean?" you ask.
"It's a slur." she says, aiming her crossbow at a nearby student. "It means his brain is too small to grasp the concept of a transgender person."
something in you clicks again.
"What's a transgender person?"
"A person who was assigned one gender at birth but is actually the other."
"... That's so awesome." you say, and Wednesday fires her crossbow, barely missing the student. "I didn't know anyone could do that."
"Well, I was assigned female, but tomorrow's a new day." She said, loading another arrow. "Should I aim at Chester who tried to kiss June while intoxicated or Michael who's currently cheating on Alisha with Paula?"
when you return home, you have a new word. and some news. you plan it in your head, wanting the words to be right.
"Family, I have an announcement." you say, standing up and clinking your glass with a knife. everyone turns to you with eyes that have always been kind to you and who've loved you, and everyone around you, with everything they had. you are safe here. you know that. but it doesn't make the telling any less difficult.
you take a deep breath.
"So, I'm transgender." you say, as matter-of-factly as you can. "I learned that word today but I realise that I always have been. Please use these new pronouns with me."
your mother and father gasp, absolutely delighted, their smiles growing wider and wider, in rapt applause, your uncle cheers, Pugsley sets off a firework that he pulled out of ancestor-knows-where, your grandma was hollering "i knew it! i knew it!" and doing a little jig (as much as her old bones would let her, anyway), and Wednesday was clapping more vigorously than she normally would. you can barely contain your grin.
the next day, there is a party. the entire family is gathered, and you are gifted new clothes, your new name is unraveled in a long red banner, dancing went on all through the night and cake was had. all is right in the world.
after all, who are the Addams if not the parts of them that make them unique?
you are an Addams. and that, if nothing else, is all you ever need to be.
