Just as smart but not as successful: obese students obtain lower school grades but equivalent test scores to nonobese students.
The obesity epidemic in industrialized nations has important implications for education, as research demonstrates lower academic achievement among obese students. The current paper compares the test scores and school grades of obese, overweight and normal-weight students in secondary and further education, controlling for demographic variables, personality, ability and well-being confounds.
RESULTS:
Obese students receive significantly lower grades in middle school (d=0.83), community college (d=0.34) and university (d=0.36), but show no statistically significant differences in intelligence or achievement test scores. Even after controlling for demographic variables, intelligence, personality and well-being, obese students obtain significantly lower grades than normal-weight students in the eighth grade (d=0.39), community college (d=0.42) and university (d=0.31).
CONCLUSION:
Lower grades may reflect peer and teacher prejudice against overweight and obese students rather than lack of ability among these students.

The look on that dog’s face says that the hoomin has made that joke every day since he got that jacket and it’s not fucking funny anymore. Not even to a little kid-dog. Find a new joke, dog dad.

I'm trying to prove that classical music isn't boring. Can you give me facts that show how hardcore classical music, musicians, and composers are (like the 1812 overture canons or the riot of spring)?
I’d love to have a more in-depth discussion of this sometime, but here’s a few facts off the top of my head
Mozart used to stay out all night partying and getting laid and then he’d sleep until noon and his long-suffering jerk of a father had to drag him out of bed to practice
He also wrote the overture for the opera Don Giovanni the morning it premiered, while extremely hungover
The interval between a perfect 4th and a perfect 5th (a tritone) was called “the devil’s interval”, and for centuries composers avoided it at all costs because it was believed to cause madness, violence, and sexual desire
Franz Liszt played so intensely that he physically destroyed pianos and they had to invent a stronger one (which is the model still used today)
Another thing about Liszt: women used to throw their underwear at him while he was performing. He was the first one-man boy band.
At the premiere of The Rite of Spring the audience was so alarmed by the dissonance and non-traditional style that they left their seats to storm out or beat each other up in the aisles
Many symphonies use non-traditional percussion like canons or massive wooden mallets, modern classical composers like John Cage like to stick things in piano strings
Shostakovich was the most hardcore composer (though I’m biased because he’s my fave). He barely escaped being exiled or killed by Stalin while continuing to write music containing forbidden folk melodies or thunderous movements depicting the dictator himself.
Paganini had no teeth and apparently looked like the devil
If folks have other facts I’d love to hear them!
J.S. Bach straight up lost one of his first jobs because he got in a sword fight with one of his students. He was 20. His student was 23. Apparently he called the student a “nanny-goat bassoonist”.
There is an opera about a magical ring that gives the wearer the power to rule the world. Through all the carnage for ownership of the ring, ALL the gods die, and Valhalla is destroyed. The opera is known as “The Ring Cycle” by Richard Wagner, and it is 15 hours long.
Oh and another thing about Liszt, he used to wear gloves and then throw them dramatically into the audience (of what I can only imagine as screaming teenage girls) before he performed.
Mozart wrote a piece called “"Leck mich im Arsch“, or “Lick Me in the Arse.”
Before batons was used for conducting, they used “pointed staffs” that would beat the tempo against the ground. Jean-Baptiste Lully stabbed himself through the foot with it, and therefore died from gangrene from the wound.
There is an aria in Lucia di Lammermoor in which the soprano has gone completely mad and has stabbed her husband to death. She sings with an accompanying flute (a bird that she’s hearing in her head), while in her wedding dress - covered in blood.
In Berlioz’s Symphony Fantastique, movement IV - “The March to the Scaffold”, the music depicts a young man’s march to the guillotine. You can hear the moment his head is cut off and bounces down the stairs.
I could probably go on forever. Classical music is fascinating!
The Ring Cycle and some of Wagner’s other works were so epic that they inspired a guy fittingly called Mad King Ludwig to basically go full on bonkers and basically spend all his time LARPing in elaborate sets from the operas.
Ludwig ultimately died under very suspicious circumstances after bankrupting the kingdom.
So basically Wagner operas actually did in real life everything suburban Christians thought Dungeons & Dragons would do to you in the 70s
Mark was off on Dagobah while Harrison and I were were getting drunk in Cloud City. (Carrie describing the filming of “The Empire Strikes Back”)
I will never not reblog this gif set whenever it comes across my dash.

Every day for the last 12 years I have sent a letter to the Pacific Ocean. They eventually get returned to me by the Post Office with markings stating, “Return to Sender.” Sometimes I get handwritten messages from postal carriers that are pretty enthralling.

“I loved you, always.”
going to comment a little on this game: the overseeing voice talks as if it owns you, and defies your free will. if you follow its orders, you are praised, and the worldview becomes sharper and more detailed. if you don’t, you are chastised, and the world becomes more vague and difficult to navigate, but also more colourful and loud. it’s odd, and sort of eerie, but definitely interesting. take it as you will.
This game really unsettles me. It unsttles me that my first choice to obey, and when I played again and disobeyed, I got really emotional really fast. Failure hurt me more the more I disobeyed. It was… interesting to experience.
i’ve always said we are trained to obey more than to think.
holy shit. i reblogged this the first time without playing. then i played in and it is terrifying. i very much like this, but it will give you intense feelings.
What’s the game??
you obey everything the game tells you too, even jumping into barbs and basically killing yourself. if you dont youre chastised and even the scolding is terrifying
So, essentially, it’s a game that illustrates what it’s like to be in an abusive parents or an abusive relationship - and how it affects you emotionally. That is horrific and ingenious - the next time someone negates the affects of emotional abuse, I’ll take them to this game and let them come to their own conclusions.
This game absolutely gets it. The most solid and reliable degradation is a gendered insult. The more you obey and co-operate, the better understanding you seem to have of your word, and things seem easier. But what really gets me is the contradiction. You are not allowed to have the correct answer. Are you a boy or a girl? The answer is no, I will give you the answer. even towards the end, your "praise” is “no, I will give you the answer. You earned this answer, but it is given to you by me.” Disobeying makes the world frightening and confusing and difficult, but beautiful in a world devoid of flavour.

Everyone must have had similar thoughts at least once. Broccoli and parsley might sometimes look like a forest, or the tree leaves floating on the surface of the water might sometimes look like little boats. Everyday occurrences seen from a pygmy’s perspective can bring us lots of fun thoughts.
I wanted to take this way of thinking and express it through photographs, so I started to put together a “Miniature Calendar” These photographs primarily depict diorama-style figures surrounded by daily necessaries. Just like a standard daily calendar, the photos are updated daily on my website and SNS page, earning it the name of “ Miniature Calendar”.
