I know I’m just an old man yelling at clouds and I’m always complaining about the ao3 subreddit, but for the last two weeks or so, r/ao3 has become inundated with “which fic was the worst read for you? explain below” and “what popular fic did you just not like and why” posts, and as a result, folks are in the comments literally linking to ao3 fics and authors they hate and writing paragraphs about why they hated their fic.

Fandom is not banding together publicly to talk about what we hate (other than canon) and it’s definitely not tagging the fic/author so other people can read the “dogshit” (real quote btw) and hate on it too.

If you’re a new fan, that’s not normal. It’s not normal at all.

I need tiktokers to understand that ao3 has been home for the freaks (affectionate) ever since the day it was created. the entire site was created because “dark and fucked up fics” were banned and removed from other platforms, so us freaks came together and created a site for other freaks — a site where nothing is censored, a site with no algorithm, no capitalism, no ads, and again, absolutely no censorship.

this has been our house for decades. you newbies don’t come into our house and tell us how to arrange our furniture. either be nice and respect our house, or leave and build your own house elsewhere.

what's crazy is byler will probably be the main long lasting thing that survives from this show in terms of pop culture relevance because the fandom will keep creating amazing art and fan fictions and maybe even one day large scale media all inspired from byler. while the ga that they tried so hard to cater to will move onto whatever new shiny netflix slop is being pushed to them.

and like, whatever. we’ve seen this film before. and that’s what they’ll say, what I’ll surely say: that we knew, that it was guaranteed to disappoint, that it was delusion to think something like that would ever come true through Netflix, through the fucking duffer brothers. I made fun of it too. Loudly, and often. But there was a part of me that did, if fleetingly, really believe. i saw a world where this story could be told well, that something with this many eyes on it could do something grand and well written and brave. And I don’t think that belief was wrong to have. It spoke to hope for a better world. And yeah, this is silly to say about fucking byler, of all things, but let this motivate you. Create well thought out, good, queer art. Do it with the resources you have. Invest in your communities, and give back to them. Support small creators of art that moves you. Vote. Volunteer. You still have that hope. Take it, and move forward.

Let’s be real, I knew Stranger Things was cooked when they became more greedy with the advertisements. Google. Coca Cola. Working with these inherently alt-right corporations while making billions to produce season 5 slop. Pretty sure ChatGPT was used way more than it should be too. Close your eyes and let Hopper speak for more than a second as you listen to how soulless and repetitive the dialogue is. Everything was boring and predictable in the worst way, all while being utterly confusing. And then the added queerphobia and racism ofc (Kali’s character) ((the lack of development for Lucas and Erica, like where R THEIR PARENTS, they are still characters who deserve just as much depth as their white counterparts).

In a world that isn’t run by cowards and greedy straight people, Will and Mike could’ve really shook something for GENERATIONS. But anyway. What do I know.
