look, I love fluffalo just as much as anyone else, really, but no. seriously no.

We don’t have a problem with the fact that there aren’t enough female superheroes, we have a problem that there are few female characters at all. Let alone well written ones, that aren’t there for the sole purpose of being the love interest, or to forward the man’s plot.

And our expectations after cap2, where natasha was amazing, were, admittedly very high and hard to meet, but to fuck up this bad, you really really need to be awful at your job. And it’s very sad that this person is constantly praised for being a feminist and to love women, cause his work more often than not shows otherwise.

What does “strong female character” even mean? Is that a way to say she’s tough and punches people? cause we don’t give a damn about that. When we demand more *strong* female characters is cause, generally speaking, most of these writers are men, and they usually only write women in two modes. You either have the super tough, tomboy (ready to fit the sexy shoes, should the situation require it), or the super feminine and vulnerable pawn. There’s no in between.

So seeing a *strong* female character in a movie is refreshing for us, cause somehow there’s less of a chance that she’s there to be the love interest. A tool to forward the man’s storyline (usually by dying). But that’s exactly what happened to Natasha, and that’s why we’re angry. She went from a well rounded character, equal to everyone else on the team, if not better, whose past was this huge part of her, whose sole purpose in life was to atone for her sins, to a lovesick who wants to leave her responsibilities behind and drive into the sunset with her man, and who stares at a wall all sad and mopey when said man leaves her.

What whedon has done to natasha is not *beautiful*. He’s trying to sell it as if we were supposed to see a different side of her, but sorry to disappoint, I didn’t see another side of a character I love. I didn’t see her shedding one of her many covers, to be vulnerable and fragile in her own way with a man she trusts (for no reason at all, but I digress). I saw another character entirely, and that’s the problem.

If this was natasha romanoff’s first movie, whedon could have had the freedom to bring her to life how he pleased. She could have been this way and we wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow because we wouldn’t have known mcu!natasha romanoff at all. But the black widow has been in not one, but THREE other movies. Movies that showed us her competence, her humor, her tough side, her vulnerable side. You can’t ignore THREE movies of character development just cause you don’t like it, or you think it could be fun to add a useless romantic subplot to the story. And again, if the Russos can have natasha show her mask slipping without completely stripping her character of what she is at core (the scene in the car with steve “truth is matter of circumstances, it’s not all things to all people all the time and neither am I”, and the scene at sam’s house, again with steve, when she talks about her past, and why she joined shield), then it means it’s entirely possible to do it and do it well and the fact that this man can’t accept honest to god criticism, and he insists that he’s right and he actually needs people to come and defend his choices is very sad.

Of course there are people who enjoyed those scenes. There are even people who shipped them since the first movie. That’s the nature of shipping. We don’t even need people actually sharing the same scene (or the same movie) once to start shipping them. But that doesn’t make it obvious for everyone else. I couldn’t see this development in the first avengers movie. I thought natasha was there on a mission, tbh, and so did scarlett johansson.

It doesn’t surprise me that it’s mark ruffalo who comes to defend this choice, when it was him who asked for this development in the first place. But see, you can’t take a character, have her act OOC, have her make heart eyes, have romantic music playing in the background when she interacts with the hero, have poor taste jokes dropped around often, have the other characters act like they knew this was coming all along and expect me to believe it’s L-O-V-E just cause you say so.

THAT’S NOT HOW IT WORKS. did no one explained to whedon the “show don’t tell” rule? Am I supposed to take his word for granted, when I saw none of this development? When neither did her best friend?

Nevermind that natasha would never want to run away instead of staying and trying to help. Nevermind that natasha would be the one to come and rescue everyone else, and not patiently wait in a cell for her knight in shining armor to come and save her. Nevermind that equating being sterile with being a monster is utterly disgusting and something that natasha would never say (read a fucking comic, whedon). And that it was only brought up to make her empathize with banner. Nevermind that we were promised a movie focused on her past, and we barely got two minutes of flashback, which only happened so it could be brought up again in a *romantic* scene and fuel that subplot.

Nevermind everything else wrong with this movie.

Don’t come and tell me that butchering THE ONLY FREAKING FEMALE SUPERHERO WE HAVE IN A TEAM OF SIX STRAIGHT WHITE DUDES WAS *BEAUTIFUL*

If he’s a feminist, then I’m really scared to think what a misogynist would have done with the character.

What really makes me frustrated is that Ruffalo - a man who starred in the movie, who profited from the movie, whose character arc was propped up by the very plotline people area objecting to - is defending Whedon and the script as though he’s a neutral party in all of this and doing it by telling detractors how they really feel.

If people step up and say “Hey, we really dislike this thing, and here’s why”, it’s incredibly dismissive for those involved to respond with “Nah, here’s what’s really causing your frustration, not what we did.”
