The important thing to realize about neo-nazis and modern nazi sympathizers, because it’s the one thing they can’t deny, is that they’ve learned to use their own absurdity as a defense mechanism, to a degree not even Sartre predicted. Having a cartoon frog as their symbol is a strength for them, because it means whenever the media reports on them, they get to turn the narrative into “haha, the mainstream media is talking about a cartoon frog! We got ‘em good!”.

This is part of a wider asset of modern neo-nazism. Truth means nothing to them, primarily with regard to their own members. “Trump’s Phantasmagoria” is an excellent article about this- it explains how trump’s complete disregard for facts actually helped him, because it let people who disagreed with some of the awful things he’s said say “oh, he didn’t really mean that.” And this attitude is everywhere on the right. When milo tells his fans to sexually harass women on his birthday, they respond “he didn’t really mean it! Lighten up!”. When he suggests women in STEM should be limited to 10 or 15%, they say “it was just a joke! He’s not a misogynist!” and laugh at all the people taking it seriously.

There’s no real limit to this. It could turn up that one of Trump’s cabinet picks has actually said “I agree with hitler” or “we should wipe out the jews”, and people would still defend him. This isn’t up for debate- countless internet conservatives have said things like this already, and yet we still have legions of people who don’t consider themselves anti-semites or racists lining up to defend them.

This leads to a really sickening mentality. The tumblr alt-right’s reaction to the current stream of articles about them is basically “Ha ha, this article about how nazism is experiencing an unprecedented resurgence and LGBT people, Jews, and Muslims fear for their lives said Richard Spencer is the leader of the movement, when it’s actually completely decentralized! Hilarious!”

And of course this is all richly flavored with the traditional reactionary bitter ironies. They expect us to ignore all the terrible things they’ve said because “it’s just a joke”, yet they insist that everyone who’s ever said “kill all men” was 100% serious. They adopted “facts over feelings” as their rallying cry, yet the ultimate fruit of their work is the post-truth world.

Alright, here’s some free lessons.

Lesson 1: being “polite” or “pleasant” at bigots doesn’t work. It didn’t work for Martin Luther King Jr, it doesn’t work today. That’s because bigots aren’t “put off” by protesters being rude or angry - they’re “put off” by protesters saying, no matter how politely, that oppression exists. Bigots are angry at having their bigotry pointed out, in any way or form. They will always paint the protesters as “too angry to be listened to”. Bigots don’t want a polite discussion - they want the opressed to stop talking.

Lesson 2: you cannot be “neutral” towards oppression. For starters, there’s no middle ground between “[minority] should be treated as an equal human being ” and “[minority] should not be treated as an equal human being”. Treating a group as equal only in some aspects and not in others means treating that group as not equal. Secondly, allow me to make an example: a kid is being beaten up by a bully. Siding with the bully means that the bully will keep on beating the kid - aka, your choice tends towards perpetuating the oppression. Viceversa, siding with the bullied kid means that you’re trying to stop the beating - aka, your choice tends towards stopping the oppression. Now, what happens if you decide to stay neutral and not interfere? The bully will keep on beating the kid. In other words, your (in)action results in the perpetuation of the oppression. THIS is why oppressed people are calling out privileged* people for not speaking out against bigotry: because said privileged people allow bigotry to go unchallenged. They’re tacitly approving of bigotry as something that “is no big deal”. (*: This entire reasoning presumes that you actually have a free choice to either oppose, promote, or “stay neutral” towards bigotry. Of course, it doesn’t apply for those who want to oppose bigotry but cannot do it, out of fear for their own personal wellbeing.)

Lesson 3: if X is an open bigot, endorsing (including voting for) X means endorsing (including voting for) an open bigot. Let’s make another example, this time taken from John Scalzi. Let’s say that you like HBO, and want to subscribe to it. However, the only way to get HBO on your TV is to subscribe to a premium channel package, which includes HBO and CInemax. You want HBO, therefore you subscribe to the package. Question: did you subscribe to Cinemax? Answer: YES, because you subscribed to the package that contained Cinemax. It doesn’t matter whether you liked or not Cinemax. It doesn’t matter whether you knew or not the channel package included Cinemax. In any case, you got Cinemax. Likewise, if you voted for someone who’s openly a bigot (and Trump is openly a bigot), then it doesn’t matter whether you voted for them because of their bigoted policies, or despite their bigoted policies. It doesn’t matter whether you bothered to learn that they were such a bigot, or whether you didn’t bother. You still voted for someone who’s openly a bigot.

Lesson 4: equating the anger of the oppressed towards bigotry, with the hate and bigotry itself is bullshit. And this is for a simple reason: the oppressed, by definition, do NOT hold the vast majority of power in our socety. Therefore, the oppressed canNOT cause systemic violence against the oppressor group. It’s impossible. For the exact same reason, it’s dishonest taking those who tell bigots they’re full of shit, and saying they’re “just as bad” as the bigots themselves (who are part of a systemic oppression that directly results in violence and deaths). It’s dishonest to compare, say, hurting someone’s feelings via calling them a bigot when their actions and ideas are bigoted, and treating homosexuality as a sexual aberration that needs to be cured, as if the two were “equally bad”.

Lastly, lesson 5: being part of an oppressed group X doesn’t magically make you immune from being a bigot alongside axis Y. To translate it: a black man isn’t magically immune from being a misogynist, just because he faces racism. A white woman isn’t magically immune from being a racist, just because she faces misogyny. And Milo being a gay man of Jewish descent doesn’t make him immune from being a fucking misogynist, pandering to Nazis (or trying to), or advocating hate.

PS: In what world is group A (women + non-white people + non-cis people + non-heterosexual people) smaller than group B (white, cis, heterosexual men)?

1. I’m not trying to say be nice to your racist uncle, i’m saying this kneejerk reaction isn’t helping anyone being oppressed out there. MLK jr still made things change, not necessarily to the bigots, but the general consensus that black people were violent thugs. The problem im seeing is “Oppressed” people are making enemies of people who aren’t radically for trump but are pushing them towards him because of this kneejerk “Everyone that doesn’t agree is a nazi” I’m reminded of Daryl Davis meeting members of the KKK network in Maryland and dismantling the entirety of it by, of all things. Talking to them and discussing their racist beliefs. Its obviously not going to work with every person but no one is even trying. There are people that DO want a discussion but everyone on the opposite side of them is treating them as a hive mind are assuming every one of them is praying to their Confederate flags at night to give power to daddy trump.

2. Im OBVIOUSLY going to side against the kid beating the other one up, it’s not the same as “this guy said mean thing X to me so i need to ruin his life” which is what a lot of people are proposing. Its terrible. Side note: I haven’t been able to share my views lately to anyone because ive seen terrible things happen to people that aren’t immediately on the left train, (Beatings, Doxxing, Property damage, Assault)

3. I don’t think Trump is much of a bigot, I’ve heard both ends and i’m leaning towards the “Lesser of two evils” reasoning, he has good ideas and bad ideas . I can see that he’s said really bad things, that’s terrible. but until he starts actually doing those things with his position as president those are irrelevent to me at the moment.

Hell i didn’t even vote, i’m just not gonna shit on someone for who they voted for like other people are doing. Trump OR Hillary.

I don’t care if X bad person endorses him like the KKK, He cant really control who publicly endorses him. I haven’t seen him sporting a Klan outfit anyway so who knows if he’s at one of those racist parties.

Way to miss my point. Here, I’ll use Wikipedia too to divide the USA:

Out of 1000 USA citizens, roughly 500 are women, and roughly 500 are men.

According to Wikipedia, roughly 72,4% of USA citizens are white. Rounding up a bit: of those 500 men, 375 (75%) are white; the remaining 125 (25%) are not white.

Also according to Wikipedia, roughly 3,8% of USA citizens are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and/or trans. So: out of 375 white men, 364 (97%) are cis and heterosexual, while the remaining 11 (3%) are either gay, bisexual, or trans.

Premise: I am not making any statement on Trump’s/Hillary’s voters (since the math I’ve used would be wrong; for example, according to these exit polls roughly 35% of USA women voted for Trump). I just want an answer to this question, which I’m going to rephrase in a clearer way:

Group A is made up by people who are either women, non-white, non-hetero, or trans.

Group B is made up by white, cis, heterosexual men.

Question: which group is the biggest one?

There is an overwhelming majority of people protesting for bullshit reasons, more than half of the protests/riots ive seen or heard about are for people that were armed and aiming at police. Or people angry that trump won and want to show how democratic they are by shouting at the white house all night.

There is a very large part of black lives matter that are violent thugs. Again, rioting over someone getting justifiably shot by the police (im not saying unjustified shootings don’t happen. I’m saying they really like protesting the ones that were justified.) beating up random white people, Setting buildings on fire. Halting a gay pride parade to make it about black people. These are not people that are going to change anything in a positive way.

We aren’t stopping them from having a discussion either. I’m not at least. We seem to be at an impasse here. I’m using the quotes because most of the oppressed people I’ve seen are college students whining about cultural appropriating cornrows. Or women majoring in gender studies complaining that no ones going in STEM.

The entire POINT of the conversation is to convince the other person that they’re wrong about what they think about you. You need to CONTRADICT their belief to try and get them to change how they think. I don’t go out to lecture the bigots on the right because i don’t see them making much of a public fuss. On the left side i see everyone saying “Down with cis white [Noun]”

I think the people protesting trump are bigots because they’re trying to hold this hive mindset that if anyone decided to vote for him, they’re disposable and should be treated like crap no matter who they are. Black people make up a disproportionate majority of people shot by the police, even taking in account the difference in violent crime rates. (Not that violent crime rates are actually correlated with police brutality, mind.) Hell, black men (6% of the USA population) make up a disproportionate majority (40%) of unarmed people shot by the police. THAT is part of what BLM is protesting against. Not “someonea black person  getting justifiably shot by the police (while somehow that same police is capable of detaining armed white people without killing them)”.

Fun fact 2: as of now, a search for “cultural appropriation” in Google scholar produces about 396.000 results; “appropriating dreadlocks” produces about 7.100 results. Fun fact 3: women are discriminated in STEM fields. Fun fact 4: literally any field that becomes female-dominated loses value, prestige and wages, because it’s seen as “feminine”, and thus lesser.

Alright, here’s some free lessons.

Treating a group as equal only in some aspects and not in others means treating that group as not equal. Secondly, allow me to make an example: a kid is being beaten up by a bully. Siding with the bully means that the bully will keep on beating the kid - aka, your choice tends towards perpetuating the oppression. Viceversa, siding with the bullied kid means that you’re trying to stop the beating - aka, your choice tends towards stopping the oppression. Now, what happens if you decide to stay neutral and not interfere? The bully will keep on beating the kid. In other words, your (in)action results in the perpetuation of the oppression. THIS is why oppressed people are calling out privileged* people for not speaking out against bigotry: because said privileged people allow bigotry to go unchallenged. They’re tacitly approving of bigotry as something that “is no big deal”. (*: This entire reasoning presumes that you actually have a free choice to either oppose, promote, or “stay neutral” towards bigotry. Of course, it doesn’t apply for those who want to oppose bigotry but cannot do it, out of fear for their own personal wellbeing.)

Lesson 3: if X is an open bigot, endorsing (including voting for) X means endorsing (including voting for) an open bigot. Let’s make another example, this time taken from John Scalzi. Let’s say that you like HBO, and want to subscribe to it. However, the only way to get HBO on your TV is to subscribe to a premium channel package, which includes HBO and CInemax. You want HBO, therefore you subscribe to the package. Question: did you subscribe to Cinemax? Answer: YES, because you subscribed to the package that contained Cinemax. It doesn’t matter whether you liked or not Cinemax. It doesn’t matter whether you knew or not the channel package included Cinemax. In any case, you got Cinemax. Likewise, if you voted for someone who’s openly a bigot (and Trump is openly a bigot), then it doesn’t matter whether you voted for them because of their bigoted policies, or despite their bigoted policies. It doesn’t matter whether you bothered to learn that they were such a bigot, or whether you didn’t bother. You still voted for someone who’s openly a bigot.

Lesson 4: equating the anger of the oppressed towards bigotry, with the hate and bigotry itself is bullshit. And this is for a simple reason: the oppressed, by definition, do NOT hold the vast majority of power in our socety. Therefore, the oppressed canNOT cause systemic violence against the oppressor group. It’s impossible. For the exact same reason, it’s dishonest taking those who tell bigots they’re full of shit, and saying they’re “just as bad” as the bigots themselves (who are part of a systemic oppression that directly results in violence and deaths). It’s dishonest to compare, say, hurting someone’s feelings via calling them a bigot when their actions and ideas are bigoted, and treating homosexuality as a sexual aberration that needs to be cured, as if the two were “equally bad”.

Lastly, lesson 5: being part of an oppressed group X doesn’t magically make you immune from being a bigot alongside axis Y. To translate it: a black man isn’t magically immune from being a misogynist, just because he faces racism. A white woman isn’t magically immune from being a racist, just because she faces misogyny. Now, what happens if you decide to stay neutral and not interfere? The bully will keep on beating the kid. In other words, your (in)action results in the perpetuation of the oppression. THIS is why oppressed people are calling out privileged* people for not speaking out against bigotry: because said privileged people allow bigotry to go unchallenged. They’re tacitly approving of bigotry as something that “is no big deal”. (*: This entire reasoning presumes that you actually have a free choice to either oppose, promote, or “stay neutral” towards bigotry. Of course, it doesn’t apply for those who want to oppose bigotry but cannot do it, out of fear for their own personal wellbeing.)

Lesson 3: if X is an open bigot, endorsing (including voting for) X means endorsing (including voting for) an open bigot. Let’s make another example, this time taken from John Scalzi. Let’s say that you like HBO, and want to subscribe to it. However, the only way to get HBO on your TV is to subscribe to a premium channel package, which includes HBO and CInemax. You want HBO, therefore you subscribe to the package. Question: did you subscribe to Cinemax? Answer: YES, because you subscribed to the package that contained Cinemax. It doesn’t matter whether you liked or not Cinemax. It doesn’t matter whether you knew or not the channel package included Cinemax. In any case, you got Cinemax. Likewise, if you voted for someone who’s openly a bigot (and Trump is openly a bigot), then it doesn’t matter whether you voted for them because of their bigoted policies, or despite their bigoted policies. It doesn’t matter whether you bothered to learn that they were such a bigot, or whether you didn’t bother. You still voted for someone who’s openly a bigot.

Lesson 4: equating the anger of the oppressed towards bigotry, with the hate and bigotry itself is bullshit. And this is for a simple reason: the oppressed, by definition, do NOT hold the vast majority of power in our socety. Therefore, the oppressed canNOT cause systemic violence against the oppressor group. It’s impossible. For the exact same reason, it’s dishonest taking those who tell bigots they’re full of shit, and saying they’re “just as bad” as the bigots themselves (who are part of a systemic oppression that directly results in violence and deaths). It’s dishonest to compare, say, hurting someone’s feelings via calling them a bigot when their actions and ideas are bigoted, and treating homosexuality as a sexual aberration that needs to be cured, as if the two were “equally bad”.

Lastly, lesson 5: being part of an oppressed group X doesn’t magically make you immune from being a bigot alongside axis Y. 1. I’m not trying to say be nice to your racist uncle, i’m saying this kneejerk reaction isn’t helping anyone being oppressed out there. MLK jr still made things change, not necessarily to the bigots, but the general consensus that black people were violent thugs. oh no, my bizarre moment has come, cause lactose tolerance is actually A Thing I Know About because it’s played a fascinating role in human evolution for thousands of years. Lactose tolerance is the majority trait for only a very few population groups: North Europeans (and therefore populations that draw heavily from that stock, such as America,) nomadic central Eurasians, and sub-Saharan pastoralist Africans, but that latter group is often overlooked. The vast majority of Africans cannot process lactose, but certain people groups whose lifestyles have revolved around cattle for thousands of years will have 80% and even approaching 100% lactose tolerance rates. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors were almost entirely lactose intolerant, that is definitely the biological norm (and people groups who maintained that lifestyle, such as Native Americans, remained as such – along with groups who transitioned to sedentary agricultural lifestyles, but I’ll get into that). As such, lactose tolerance is an adaptive trait that only became prevalent in environments that exerted strong selective pressure for it. So, cows were domesticated some 10,000 odd years ago in the Middle East (and some have contended for an independent domestication event in Africa as well). In either case, cattle quickly spread across the continent and we know there was milking and cheese production at least 6,000 years ago in both the Nile and Mesopotamia. While cow meat would have been enjoyed by all, in agricultural societies milk and cheese would have been options, but hardly staples as there were plenty of other things to eat as well, and therefore there would have been no selective pressure for processing lactose. Also, sedentary societies had ways of processing milk and cheese that allowed lactose intolerant people to drink/eat dairy products. Fermenting milk or aging cheese breaks down lactose, making it a non issue once ingested. This is why fermented milk may seem utterly foul to many Westerners, but is extremely common in other parts of the world. But, fermentation and aging requires time, and the ability to store things in a single location for weeks or even months. There are still mobile pastoralist societies in Africa today, and there have been for thousands and thousands of years. Milk also allowed for a marked shortening of the weaning process, transitioning children from breastmilk to cow’s milk, which would again be advantageous for groups where both the men and women work and are always on the move. Over generations these populations specialized into essentially cow-based lifestyles, creating a survival niche highly advantageous to them, and fast forward thousands of years and there are groups in Africa with near ubiquitous lactose tolerance, while the rest of the continent (and the world really) is nearly entirely intolerant. 

Many of these same factors would have influenced the central Eurasian populations, which is why Mongolians and other descendants of nomadic steppe peoples are largely lactose tolerant, as mare’s milk would have been a dietary staple (though they also developed efficient ways to ferment it). 

North Europeans developed lactose tolerance in response to deficiencies in certain nutrients. The northern climate limited Vitamin D production, and the agricultural products available to them were often low on calcium and protein, and so dairy farming developed alongside agriculture to create a more rounded diet (and this was limited to Northern Europeans, as Mediterranean peoples such as the Romans wrote about their great confusion at the northern barbarians’ ability to drink fresh milk)

And I promise all of this is fascinating because the ability to process lactose evolved independently in several different population groups and in response to different factors: lifestyles revolving around cows, lifestyles revolving around horses, deficiencies in climate and agriculture. Besides providing insight into human history and biology, lactose tolerance is also a great example of convergent evolution, where different genetic populations in different environments produce similar results. 

And uh, that’s my rant about the role of milk and lactose tolerance in human evolution.
