Hamburger by Song Wei (宋玮). 2017.
Born in Le Shan, Sichuan Province, China, Song Wei (宋玮) is best known for his juxtaposition of emblems of pop culture with the blue-and-white motifs found on Ming Dynasty porcelain vases. A Sichuan Fine Arts Institute alumni, Song Wei has taught there since his 2005 graduation. He holds both a Bachelor and Master of Arts from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Institute of Fine Arts.
Hamburger (2015), which is similar to Hamburger (2017) in concept and design, was selected by a French bank, BNP Paribas, to be part of an international publicity campaign. Song melds the images and stereotypes of the East and West to create a hybridised cultural aesthetic, referencing the impact of Western merchandise on Chinese consumerism and contemporary society.
