This curious little gem from Y5

If there's anything I've noticed about this game is that at times the translations can be a little off/not encompass everything a character said/make dialogue a lot shorter than it sounds like it is/etc.

At one point, I can clearly hear Kiryu say "kokoro" when asking Baba about Saejima winning him over, but the subtitles don't include anything about the word heart. Made me wonder more about the actual line. I take it that maybe the subs aren't that far off, really.

And to boot, Baba's behavior when talking about Saejima here is so funny that Kiryu is able to immediately pick up on his feelings. You can even hear him drop the polite speech a little at the end, get sort of breathy, and flustered. What did Saejima unintentionally do to this man.

GET READY BECAUSE THIS WHOLE SCENE GETS VV JUICY ok not the whole scene, just the final dialogue So according to a friend of mine who has been studying japanese for ages and lived there for over a year (lu.emery on IG), Baba has a bit more to say than that. Kiryu asks him "Was your heart moved by Saejima?" (「さえじまに心を動かされたってところか」>  Saejima ni kokoro wo ugokasareta tte tokoro ka)

Kokoro does mean "heart"

Ugoku means "to move", ugokasu means "to actively move something", ugokasareru means "to have been actively moved",

and tte tokoro ka means kinda like "right?", "did i get that right?"

HOWEVER, Baba basically replies: "I... fell in love with him..." (その通りです。俺はサエジマさんに惚れてしまった。」 (Sono toori desu. Saejima-san ni horete shimatta)

Sono toori desu means "exactly"

Horeru (horete's root verb) means "to fall in love, to be in love, to be charmed with, to lose one's heart to". Which means Baba *has* been captivated by him, and that's usually used in a *romantic* context. It could also be like "wow that person is fucking awesome", which also makes sense bc it's Saejima we're talking about lol 

and tte shimatta basically means that it wasnt his choice. Maybe he says it out of regret, or maybe it's just because he didnt mean for it to happen, that it wasnt intentional.

ALL IN ALL japanese is a very contextual language. The translation for what Kiryu says is 100% spot on, but what Baba says has a bit more nuance into it. So him saying he'd follow Saejima anywhere carries the same ambiguous intention in both languages, but the original text does seem to lean a bit more towards romance than the english version. But then again queerbaiting is a real marketing tactic is old as time itself so lmao at least baba doesnt die in the end, unlike other queer-coded characters in these games :cry:

…I spent the entirety of Y5 dreading Baba dying (because, of course he would, right?) only to find out he DOESN’T die?? I thought I’d been spoiled for it. I spent the entire game thinking it was a done deal.

You’re telling me he’s out there, in the world, loving Saejima so freakin’ much that he’s finishing his jail sentence, getting through day after day, trying to become the kind of man his aniki would be proud of? Would stand next to? Swear to? Would love? I am gonna throoooooow up, I am sick with relief and Saebaba feelings.
