Communicating vs consuming content
People are made for speaking.
It's way too easy to let pictures and videos speak for you. And by that I don't mean art pieces that require a long time to understand them and that are open to interpretation, but strong imagery, symbols and immediately recognisable audiovisual content (i.e. memes).
We're getting used to communicating through means that are focused on capturing our attention more than sparking thoughts and reflection. We think we understand and assimilate this form of content consciously, but it's actually too immediate for us to properly process it.
And even though we might think that we are unaffected by this 'unprocessed content', it actually shapes the way we think in ways that that may be beyond our control. That’s because even content toward which we would naturally be neutral could steer our emotions and our way of thinking in a different direction if it’s expressed in such sensationalist language.
It's like all forms of communication are becoming ads, as if we were trying to sell what we have to say. Social media structures are turning discussions into markets in which the money is your attention, the goal of consumers is to find content that interests and entertains them; that of sellers is to earn attention; and that of entrepreneurs is to orchestrate everything like a puppeteer in order to extract time and money from consumers and steer their consumption, ideology, and way of thinking—a pitiful concentric reflection of the capitalist system on which our society is based.
So listen carefully to what people are saying, instead of just buying the content they are trying to sell you. Embrace complexity: even though it may make the content seem less appealing, it is what defines its quality. To return to the analogy from earlier, the more a piece of content tries to capture your attention (rather than your thought or genuine inspiration), the lower its quality will be. Conscious consumers buy quality products, conscious media users engage with "boring", complex and peculiar media.
And don't express yourself just to earn other people's attention or esteem, don't sugarcoat what you want to say just to make it more appealing: free yourself from this consumeristic mindset and be unapologetically creative, imaginative and inquisitive, without expecting anything in return.
"But if I say/do this people won't like me..." is the same as "but if I sell this people won't buy it..." , and we know what that mindset leads to.
Maybe the structure of capitalism itself isn't the real problem, but this mindset is.
Don't repeat the same pattern.
