âLook - - - thereâs nothing wrong with moisturiser. See this beautiful face? How itâs so smooth and soft? Moisturiser.â
Rolling her eyes she moved around his car getting into the passenger seat. âMy baby brother is all knowing? We should sign up for a carnival and tell people their future.â
Caesar snorted, mimicking her actions by rolling his eyes. âYou could tell these people anything and theyâd eat it up, humans are so gullible.â
âItâs been through so much with me though!â Beatrice placed a hand on her car, she knew he was right. It was costing more than it was worst, breaking down every other day, and just wouldnât start when it was cold. âWill you at least give me a ride? Iâll think about getting a new car.â
Caesar rolled her eyes and patted the door of his car. âGet in loser, weâre going shopping.â He had a love for films, old and recent enough to be quoted with people knowing what the hell he was talking about. âListen to your younger brother, Beatrice. He knows all.â
âStupid fucking car,â Beatrice huffed, almost kicking the door to get out. Placing her hands on her hips, she knew she shouldâve gotten a newer car. âDo you know the number for the tow truck service?â
Caesar flashed Beatrice a grin, as he leaned out of the window of his own car, looking at her piece of junk car. âOr, or you could just buy a new car.â
Ebba smiles softly at herlittle brother. He always reminded her of their dad, what a man. Well, what a king if they were being exact. âCaeser, a lot has changed. But for one, I did miss you.â She said. She honestly did miss her brother. She never liked having a missing sibling in the house. It felt a bit emptier without him. She smiled softly and held out a small piece of cake to him, baking it herself. âWelcome home, brother.â She said, hoping her brother would like the cake.
Caesar had often looked up to their father - the king, the one who ruled all. He aspired to be more like him as he grew up, so much so that he was even named after him - Leopold the second, but now those were bittersweet memories. He refused to go by that name again. âWhy thank you, darling sister.â He gave her an affectionate smile - Caesar had a soft-spot for Ebba. Accepting the cake with a grin, he took a small bite of it, finding comfort in the small piece. âIt is absolutely delicious, Eb. You did a good job.â
âSeems we have that in common. My own daughters wouldnât care if someone trapped me in a lamp right now. I donât even want to start with my grandson⊠Honestly whatâs family for if not to discourage you, though?â
âI didnât speak to them for two hundred years because they irritated me, so in all honesty I donât think weâre the family of the year. Or century, even. Maybe thatâs just me, seeing as I was always the âproblemâ child. I canât help it theyâre so bloody irritating.â
Frederik narrowed his eyes at his younger brother, a smile playing on his lips. âObviously youâve been gone far too long, baby brother. Beasts are all the rage in town these days.â
âOh how you amuse me, Freddy.â His nickname for his brother hadnât been used in a long time; it felt foreign on Caesarâs lips. âIt has been far too long. Exciting though, I visited Europe. Itâs strange; everything is so modernised nowadays.â
âYes, wellâŠmost here seem to be the âso what?â type of welcome party. Not many of them careâ and frankly I hadnât known you well enough to do so either. But I suppose a welcome is in order. So: welcome back, Ainsworth.â
âWell you are definitely more welcoming than my dear, old family. Would you consider adopting me? I donât like them much anyway.â
âWhy would that happen if no one missed you?â
âOh Frederik, put the claws away. Nobody likes a beast.â
âThis town has an odd way of welcoming back departed guests. Whereâs the welcome banner? The âI-missed-youâ cupcakes? Such a let down.â
âNo, nope, nuh uh. Just wondered what the goop was.â
âDo you want some?â
âWhatâŠwhatâre you doing?â
âMoisturising my hands, is that a crime?â
âIt is always so nice to hear you bullshitting me.â Valeria rolled her eyes as she took a seat beside him.
âIf I wonât, who will?â Caesar cracked a grin at Valeria, who had to be at least her favourite mermaid. âHowâve you been, dear Valeria?â
âI guess everything was just easier when we were children. Remember when we spent all day outside, came back home with mud all over our clothes? Mother was furious.â
âWe were going to rule the world, were we not? Those were good times, I miss them quite a bit. Mother would get furious, but father would just laugh.â
âGenetics is a funny thing, no? Cause while you say my face looks constipated, I say it just gets like this when Iâm thinking about punching people.â
âGo ahead, punch me. The outcome is gonna hurt you a lot more than it does me.â
âItâs eight hundred years of putting up with you and your antics.â
âAh, but you love me anyway.â
âWhy, did your mother tell you that you were pretty and you believed her until you looked in the mirror?â Rosa asked, crossing her arms. âI didnât need my mother to tell me thatâIâve had plenty of people reassure it to me.â
âOh no, my mother is dead.â
