Being a musical fan in Germany makes me a little crazy actually.
What is it with theatre people here and their general aversion to musicals? Why do they write off a whole form of theatre as „not real theatre“? State theaters will at best put on one musical per year and the chances are 50/50 whether they‘ll be good or not. Like who thought that turning Sweeney Todd into an operetta with so little set pieces that I had to explain the plot to people during intermission was a good idea? I fully believe that those who say musical isn‘t „real theatre“ haven‘t actually listened to many musicals. And even if they didn’t like the musicals on the market. Make one then?? Like it’s just a form of theatre it’s not inherently better or worse than any other. Just make a better one then.
And then you have all the big production companies like BB Entertainment, Stage Entertainment and ATG Entertainment who put on grand productions (with expensive ticket prices) but hardly ever take risks? I am so tired of the juke box musicals and the Disney musicals and the 20th year of Starlight Express (to be clear I don’t mind the musicals themselves, but that there’s little else to be found).
And the same goes for German original musicals! Most of them are jukebox musicals or based on things where the companies are sure people will come watch (musicalvienna I am BEGGING you to make more musicals that aren‘t „Austrian historical figure nr. 1538291“). And when they’re not they’re still not as good as they could be. Why am I paying 125 bucks per ticket to watch a bad ripoff of Cell Block Tango about rape culture. Germany has such a large and active theatre community and this is really the best we have to offer when it comes to musicals? C‘mon man. We can do better than this.
And the thing is!! You can acquire rights vor a LOT of good musicals, translated and everything. But professionals rarely do those so it’s up to amateur groups, in my opinion the backbone of the musical scene. My one true love. My life savers. Like. Go on Musik & Bühne’s Website and look at all the incredible stuff they have!! We could have so many incredible professional productions but instead we get the third iteration of Cats in like five years.
It’s just frustrating man. There’s so much talent here. We could be so good but we’re just incredibly mediocre instead.
