struggling with jared. trying to just sketch out some Shapes for him. the shape is almost right, but its wrong bc its not moth-y enough. he feels like he needs to have a tail, to like, balance him out or something, but when i put on a moth body it looks Wrong. I think im settled on wanting him to have horrible little finger hands all the time tho.

this one is a mess bc it was going okay and then when i got to the head i felt compelled to put it on Backwards to make the curves of the neck feel more in line with the moth body, and they do, except, you know, now his head is backwards.

this is just...christ no

like these look great the shapes fit and flow much nicer, unfortunately, they dont look very mothlike at all

okay so the best way ive found to make it look not weird but maintain good strong pigeon and moth vibes is to make the pigeon head all scrunched short like a little fat bird, which pigeons do. but that still leavs the problem of it looking weird as hell (and not in the way i want!) when the neck extends

maybe the answer Is to abandon my desire for Pigeon /Moth looks and go back to making him a knockoff of Jula's original design

i could keep the pigeon head and make him centaur shaped with horrible humany hands. idk we'll see

Do you have any tips for composition?? I'm a beginner on that and I really love the way you do it

thank you! (again ive never had any real training in any of this) but i would say! know your basic composition rules/template things- golden ratio, golden spiral, etc, first of all. For me personally, i draw a lot of wide open spaces/backgrounds so MOST of my composition are rule-of-thirds ( i really should try the spiral more often). 

second, think about line balances/unbalance. it’s about the mood you want to set. for example, with the first drawing i wanted a very laid-back tranquil mood, so i wanted a sense of balance with my composition with the upward slope of one hill being canceled out with the downward slope of the second. for the second one, however, i wanted some energy, so i sought to create an upset with the lines.

third, i’d consider color balances/ imbalances. colors have SO much say in where your eye travels around the picture (and also im a color FREAK). you can use darker colors to frame a picture if your piece feels too big and empty and you want the focus to narrow down without actually making the canvas smaller:

if you want the viewer’s eyes to just travel around the picture and take the whole thing in, distribute colors evenly throughout the canvas. (sorry it’s so messy, but you get the point) think about the distribution of hue, saturation, and darkness/lightness.

if you want them to focus on that ONE thing, you can concentrate saturation, brightness, warmness etc to make the area pop. i used all three in these drawings!

also! @genicetea has some NEEAATT stuff on drawing the viewer’s eye and contrasts and composition on her twitter so if you want something that actually makes sense go there!

Talk about the complicated relationship between good art and horniness

Making art is such a to-do, you have to have a reason to do it, and one of the classic reasons to do anything is to get laid, or to trick your brain into thinking you are going to get laid by imagining horny subjects, sitting there writing your story like you are a satin bowerbird arranging its collection of bic pen lids just so, or, conversely, writing about a satin bowerbird arranging its collection of bic pen lids just so because it is incredibly arousing for you to think about this (in this example you are a female satin bowerbird)

The difficulty of course is that having used your perverted urges to trick yourself into creativity you cannot then let them run amok, lest you create tedious enhorniments that are interesting only to people who understand what you are getting at all too well, and even then only briefly, followed by intense shame and tab-closing; also your unmediated horngling may have alarming side effects in the brains of the impressionable and you might end up with a generation of people who are willing to defend the work of Dan Shive to me, at length

The trucks discord - and you know it’s a good conversation when people break out the graphs - developed a two-variable rubric for horniness and art, which can be boiled down to covert and overt horniness - where in one corner of the cartesian plane you have a work that has no adult content whatsoever but is clearly incredibly horny, and in the other you have pornography that nobody could possibly find arousing, and I think good art can be located anywhere on this graph but it is as always helpful if the artist knows what is happening in the art

To sum up: Nabokov teaches us that even the horniest and most disreputable art can be good, but you’d better be Nabokov if you’re gonna try it - Hussie teaches us that even the most awkward sexless art can launch a thousand perversions if you don’t have a handle on your subconscious - Ikuhara teaches us that you can use the motivating power of horniness to critique horniness itself, but maybe you had better not go back to the well too many times, lest you fail to create an anti-sex sex film - and Ballard teaches us that good art can be full of sex and yet resolutely unhorny, even anti-horny, leaving the viewer with the crawling desire to escape from their own genitals
