His attempt on her life, in fact, still lingered like a bruise that refused to fade. Bucciarati had risked his own life to save hers, too, and that sacrifice only added another weight of guilt to her shoulders. What she needed was a distraction. A few hours of normalcy. A friend.

" ... Scusa. " The apology came out soft, almost reluctant, her gaze fixed on the worn, grimy carpet lining the corridor. Trish kept her feet just inside her room, careful not to let her expensive socks touch the dirt. " Sei l'unico qui che mi dia retta, quindi ... " Her voice trailed off, the rest of the thought left unspoken.

" N-no... I can't do it... " Trembling hands raked through the sparse hair on his head, shrunken pupils locked onto the pristine white sheet of paper laid so neatly on the desk in front of him. To be fair to Okuyasu, he had tried. The tip of his pencil touched the page, hesitated, yet managed to scratch out a few uneven lines that marked the shaky beginnings of an opening sentence for his essay. But then, the pressure caught on.

" That's it! I'm way too dumb for this! " He threw his arms up in complete surrender before letting his forehead drop onto the table with a solid thud. " I'LL NEVER PASS THIS FREAKIN' TEST !!! "

" I saw you. " Three little, simple words which are potent enough to make a culprit's guilty heart skip a beat. However, there's no accusation in her tone. Just a playful glint, the sort of teasing complicity you'd find in an average married couple. Yet, despite having known each other for a decade, it's a privilege she decides to share with Kosaku only now.

After all, it's been days since the misdemeanor and her heart still flutters whenever she thinks about it. Her cheeks flush before her thoughts stumble out, half-whispered and laced with amusement.

" I don't know how you pulled it off but ... When you robbed our landlord, I couldn't help but wonder what else we could get away with. " The young woman lets a thoughtful pause lingers, as if the gears in her mind have begun to turn. Then, with an airy laugh, Shinobu waves a dismissive hand, the other gently cupping her cheek like a schoolgirl caught daydreaming. " Ahhh ~ Don't mind me, dear. " A small, nonchalant shrug. " I suppose it's because nothing exciting ever happens in the daily life of a housewife. "

The longer the silence drags, the more visibly nervous he gets. His foot taps an anxious rhythm on the floor and his brows knot together like he's trying to solve a math problem.
