Happy Anniversary to Infinite Darkness!
guys i’m so sorry to say this but exercising and indulging in hobbies rather than scrolling on your phone for 200 hours actually does improve your mood and overall mental health, this has deeply upset me more than anyone
"That was all Carlos. He carried you here and he treated you himself, crazy bastard."
here is my guest piece for Remembrance zine!
while the leon and grace father-daughter thing is cute for fanart, i do think it discredits the unabashed kindness and empathy leon displays for this girl. he finds her completely out of her depth, scared out of her wits, can't be older than 25. he asks no questions and hands off his most powerful weapon so she can protect herself. he's not protecting grace because he's a father figure, he's protecting her because he went through his first day in raccoon city alone.
i do unironically think the best artists of our generation are posting to get 20 notes and 3 reblogs btw. that fanfic with like 45 kudos is some of the best stuff ever written. those OCs you carry around have some of the richest backstories and worldbuilding someone has ever seen. please do not think that reaching only a few people when you post means your art isn't worth celebrating.
There's something about having the other protagonist of Requiem be named Grace when grace arguably is the thing Leon needs the most, and something he's never really extended to himself. It's been almost 30 years since his life got turned upside down. He's back where it all started and it's killing him. Metaphorically and literally. There's a young woman in there with him who's so scared, but being so brave about it and she's so much like him. Someone who's been through terrible things and blames herself for what happened despite being helpless to stop it. Whatever it takes, count me in.
When he looks at her he sees himself, and her name is Grace

need code veronica claire to be as vicious and scary as her brother. like i need that shit. i need to see her making bad decisions and having no remorse for it until afterwards. she deserves it, and she’s equally as capable as everyone else in the franchise. i don’t want her to take backseat in her own game, i don’t want chris and wesker to steal the spotlight. i don’t want her and steve to have feelings for each other. this is her game. and she’s not some helpless waif
claire meeting leon when she was a college student just makes so much sense and is proof that the situationship you form at the age of 19 will haunt you for the rest of your life
▋I hate the way fandom power-scales Claire through this weird credentialist lens, as if she needs a military résumé before she’s allowed to be competent, especially whenever people talk about the original Code: Veronica opening.
You know the one. Claire infiltrates an Umbrella facility, gets chased down by armed guards and helicopters, causes absolute chaos, and still goes out like a menace. It is easily the most badass FMV from the original era of the series, and every time someone says, “That should have been Chris,” I’m like: okay, thank you, you should’ve just started there. We could’ve saved time.
Because that’s usually where the argument is going anyway. It’s not really about whether Claire is “capable” of doing it. It’s about people being weirdly annoyed that Claire got that sequence.
And I find that so boring, because Claire has never needed to be a soldier for that scene to make sense. Her whole character is cut from the same cloth as Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor: everyday women who are thrown into horror, survive it, adapt, harden, and become terrifyingly competent because the situation demands it.
Sarah Connor is not introduced in The Terminator as some elite commando. She’s a nineteen-year-old waitress. Ripley is not introduced in Alien as an action hero. She’s a warrant officer trying to keep everyone from doing something stupid, which, unfortunately for her, is apparently a full-time job. Their power does not come from credentials. It comes from escalation. They survive the nightmare, and the nightmare changes them.
That is Claire.
Claire survives Raccoon City. She’s been trained by Chris, yes, but more importantly, she has already been through the kind of trauma that either breaks you or turns you into someone who can move through fear without stopping. So when Code: Veronica opens with her breaking into Umbrella’s Paris facility, I don’t see that as “unrealistic.” I see it as genre language. It is the game telling you: this is not the same girl who walked into Raccoon City looking for her brother. This is what surviving Raccoon City did to her.
And the Code: Veronica opening has always felt like it was recalling Sarah Connor’s unseen Cyberdyne incident before T2, where John explains that his mother was arrested after trying to infiltrate and blow up Cyberdyne. That is the same archetype. Not “trained military professional does military professional things,” but “ordinary woman discovers the machine behind the horror and decides she is going to drag hell directly to its front door.”
So it annoys me when people try to flatten Claire back down into “just a college student” every time she does something impressive.
Yes. She was a university student.
So was Sarah Connor “just” a waitress.
Ripley was “just” a civilian worker.
That is the point. That is the entire flavor. That is why it works.
I’ll admit, the recent producer comments about Code: Veronica’s remake portrayal make me a little nervous. The whole “RE2 was only three months ago” thing is technically true, but I hope that does not become an excuse to sand Claire down too much. Three months is not a lot of time in normal life. Three months after surviving Raccoon City is not normal life.
Claire does not need to be written like Chris. She should not be written like Chris. But she also should not be written like she wandered into the plot with a backpack and a prayer. She has already survived one of the worst bioterror outbreaks in history. She has already learned what Umbrella is. She has already decided to chase them instead of run from them.
That opening is not some random “girlboss” power fantasy. It is the thesis statement of Claire’s original-era character:
You can underestimate her because she does not have the official title, the uniform, or the resume.
That has historically gone very badly for people.

Fanfiction is supposed to be cringy. You're allowed to write bad. You're allowed to be cringe. Fanfiction is supposed to be self indulgent. You're allowed to be cringe. Let yourself be cringe. Fanfiction is supposed to be fun. Stop putting arbitrary rules on yourself and be free.
what i hate the most ab re9 discourse rn is when anyone mentions any resident evil women and how they should’ve been relevant in requiem it all boils down to debates about their importance to leon’s character
any mention of them is discussed as PROOF LEON IS MARRIED TO THEM or how they shouldn’t be there bc of what they mean or don’t mean to leon
jill has the most connection to racoon city, it’s a place where she lived, worked and was hunted down for trying to stop the unimaginable
it’s sherry’s home and a place where she lost both her parents in a horrific way
it’s a city claire went to in search for her only family, her big brother, her stability and protection, and instead ended up finding it in herself to become “the elder” to another, protecting and fighting for sherry. racoon city incident changed her entire life and her idea of self, she never wanted to fight, was looking for a fighter (chris) and ended up becoming a fighter herself and continued fighting for humanity after going through that transformation
raccoon city was a place where ada saw firsthand not just the devastation choices of others lead to, but also saw hope, evidence that not every person is selfish, that there’s still humanity. her “death” was symbolic to the rebirth of ada who made her own choices and chose to save people. she explicitly mentions raccoon city changing her as a person later and that change leads to her saving billions of people
most of RE fans are failing the bechdel test in their own heads i swear
leon’s character has his own ark and we love him, but resident evil women are so much more than their connections to men and their paths and sole inner turmoil deserves same consideration outside of relationships, it’s 2026 how is this something that has to be spelled out yet again in our day and age
im not even saying they should be in the game, i’m not speaking on their involvement or lack of it bc i think this group mindset is exactly why capcom left them out of the picture and continues to do so with new characters (have my thoughts ab that as well but that’s a monologue for another time) but this particular line of thinking is frying my brain
I understand the fanon appeal of "All the resident evil protags hang out in between games!" but let's take a minute and consider what a funny dynamic "coworker who I only see when the world is about to end" really is.
An angel on his wrist.
An angel in his memory.
(Yes, is Leon’s theme)
