I regress a bit, usually sliding between age 8-12 (though depending on the trigger it can sometimes dip a bit lower)

Don't really hear many people talking about this part of dealing with childhood trauma as an adult, so I'm gonna talk about it.

Compulsive lying.

Tiny lies told to hide small things that are your fault because you grew up having to be hyperaware of the volatile emotions of an adult (even if it wasn't ever directed at you, your brain was absorbing that observation data)

"Sorry im late, I got stuck in traffic!" No I didn't. I lost track of time and left my house late.

It starts small, like a snowball. Then you add to it unintentionally. Your snowballs start to combine and eventually it'll start rolling down a hill, and all you can do is stand there and watch as everyone sees. Knows.

You feel so ashamed and confused, because your friends, your partner, your coworkers or whoever logically wouldn't actually be upset. They'd probably laugh it off with a "oof, been there! Might need to set an alarm next time! 😆"

But logic is overridden by anxiety and that past data being pulled up. So you lie and lie, and eventually it unravels and hurts the people you lied to. And that's worse.

And it's tough, trying to let go of that habit. Because for so long, it was what kept us safe. Helped us protect ourselves, or our siblings. But outside of that scenario, it can't hold up the same way.

Because the people aren't the same. The situation has gotten better. Change has happened, and you must decide to change with it or let yourself be owned by the past; let the person who hurt you still control you without even being present.

Correct yourself if you catch yourself. Tell others who care about you what you're dealing with. Let yourself be cared about and taken care of. Let yourself make mistakes, and trust the people you've chosen to be in your life to do good by you.

Don't do them the disservice of unintentionally implying that they're like the person who hurt you and can't be trusted.

Let yourself be messy and upset and embarrassed. Emotions aren't meant to be hidden.

Let yourself be.

It will get better.

You will feel better.

I really hate a lot of the advice on the Internet about taming birds.

So much of it is literally "isolate your birds so they bond to you instead of each other" or "clip your bird's wings so it can't get away from you when it feels nervous." I'm no expert, but that's fucked up, man.

My advice for winning over untamed birds:

Include the bird in your daily routine. Eat, read, and do activities in their presence.

Figure out a treat the bird enjoys.

Spend time with the bird while offering them this treat, directly from your hand if possible.

Go up to but not over the limit of the bird's comfort with you. When the bird is nervous, back off.

Accept that you cannot force anyone or anything to love you.

Love the bird anyway.

I have a group of Steller's Jays who regularly eat at my house (i put out a fruit & large nuts mix). One of them, who I've named Baby, has learned where my bedroom window is.

In the morning, Baby comes to my window and screams until I get up and we make eye contact, then flies over to the bowl I use as a feeder and waits for me there. If I don't respond to her first shrieks (sometimes I'm sleeping), she leaves & comes back every two hours.

Once I exit the house, she flies to a tree nearby to wait for me to go back inside, then calls her buddies down. We've got a pretty good thing going, and they'll sometimes escort me to the end of my driveway in a fun parade of loud shrieking and blue feathers.

Are they bird thugs that have scared off any smaller birds away from my house? Yes. But they're my bird thugs! 😂💜

I'm gonna comment on something I've been seeing in the community for a while now that's a little concerning to me.

If you are bodily under 18-21, you should not be posting your actual age on your blog/DNI, or at least, not that specifically.

This is from years of internet safety experience. The fact of the matter is that your blog is public. This means any person can search it up, and unfortunately there are a lot of people who look for minors online. Especially those with mental, emotional or physical issues, as many of us in this community do have in some capacity.

Now, that's not to say that you can't choose to tell people. We all want connection, and that's why a lot of us are on this app. But use caution and good sense.

Stay safe, have fun, and be smart. It'll make your online experience so much better!
