THE MAJOR ARCANA
a collection of character development questions based on the arcana and their themes !! this is part of a collection of tarot-themed asks. if multi, please specify which muse(s) the question is directed toward !!
[THE FOOL] - Do they weight their options when making a decision, or do they impulsively make a choice?
[THE MAGICIAN] - Are they resourceful? What skills do they possess that help them navigate the world around them?
[THE HIGH PRIESTESS] - Do they meditate? Would they be considered "in tune" with themselves, or do they struggle with personal growth?
[THE EMPRESS] - Do they participate in or have a self-care ritual? If so, what does their routine look like?
[THE EMPEROR] - Is your muse a leader? If so, what kind of leader are they? Do they take a hands-off approach, or do they micromanage?
[THE HIEROPHANT] - What are important traditions to them, if any? Do they stay true to these traditions, or do they adapt them to fit their current situation?
[THE LOVERS] - What do they consider to be the "perfect partner", be it romantic, platonic, alterous, etc.? Is there someone like that in their life?
[THE CHARIOT] - Are they confident? If so, what makes them the most confident in themselves/their abilities?
[STRENGTH] - What are they determined to accomplish the most?
[THE HERMIT] - What does their inner voice sound like? Is it self-reflecting and introspective, or domineering and judgmental?
[WHEEL OF FORTUNE] - Do they believe in destiny/fate? If so, what do they believe their "purpose" is in this life?
[JUSTICE] - Are they a mediator, or do they prefer to step away from potential conflict?
[THE HANGED MAN] - Would they sacrifice themselves, literally or metaphorically, for those close to them? If so, what kind(s) of sacrifice would they make?
[DEATH] - What is their view on the cycle of life? Do they believe in reincarnation?
[TEMPERANCE] - Are they a patient person, or do they tend to act on impulse?
[THE DEVIL] - Which of the capital vices is your muse tempted by? (Pride, Greed, Wrath, Envy, Lust, Gluttony, Sloth)
[THE TOWER] - Are they a destructive individual (be it literally or metaphorically)? If so, how?
[THE STAR] - What is their health like? Do they consider themselves healthy, or do they feel like they could make improvements to better their health?
[THE MOON] - If they had to choose one trait to describe themselves, what would it be? Is it a genuine answer, or the illusion/persona they put on for others?
[THE SUN] - What makes them feel good? This can be happy, energized, revitalized, etc. It's all about good vibes, so what gives them to your muse?
[JUDGMENT] - What was an epiphany/awakening they recently had? Did they realize something that they've been naive to? Did they discover something about themselves? What happened?
[THE WORLD] - How would they define a utopia? What would it consist of, and do they see it as something achievable?
not that anyone asked, but here’s a literal character-building exercise: ask yourself what a fate worse than death would be for a specific character.
that means something tied to who they are rather than something everyone would think is worse than death. you don’t have to actually write it into the story, and in a lot of cases you shouldn’t. many characters will never have thought about this explicitly, just like many people wouldn’t have an answer for this. idk, i’ve never seen this before on lists of writing advice, and this sort of thing is more important to know than what kind of cereal your characters prefer.
oh true. op has many ideas worth listening to
Oh man, it’s been a while since I’ve drawn these two!!
For those who don’t know, back in highschool I used to have two superhero OCs named RJ and Wesley who moonlighted as superheroes named BlueJay and Momentum, respectively.
After college I kind of stopped drawing them as I moved on to other interests and I lost touch with RJ as a comfort character, but recently I redesigned them to be more in line with who I am today and I’ve come to fall in love with them again, and now I’m drawing them again! So I figured I’d share, because they still mean a lot to me and I’m happy to be drawing them again!
RJ Wells, a.k.a. BlueJay, is the girl with the cape and is a non-binary lesbian and autistic. She’s a bit aloof and doesn’t get attached to people easily, and she kind of kept to herself before she met Wesley and opened up to others about herself an her interests. She takes her superhero work very seriously and mainly relies on her strength and intelligence to do her job. She has telepath and mind control powers, which is where she gets the codename “BlueJay” from, and she tries to keep secret until Wesley helps her through trauma about having them. She loves to just chill and hang out with Wesley at the end of the day, and enjoys very low-key relaxing activities in general.
Wesley Evans, a.k.a. Momentum, is the girl with the freckles and is a bisexual Afro-Indian girl with ADHD. She’s friendly and outgoing but also patient and kind, and she had a hard time admitting when she was struggling or being vulnerable with others until she met RJ. She tends to find it easier to relate to others than to think about herself, and RJ helps her to realize that she’s a smart, funny, and hella capable superhero in her own right. She’s a speedster, and was discouraged from using her powers for most of her life until she met RJ, who helped her not feel ashamed of using them or doing things differently than other people. She loves to run and uses it to de-stress when the going gets tough.
As for the story, in high-school I had more of it figured out but a lot has happened since then and I think it could use a lot of tinkering, so for now I just like to draw these characters as a superhero team/couple, and I’d like to make their story focus on their relationship as a neurodivergent couple as well as fun superhero shenanigans.
I hope you all like their redesigns, and hopefully at some point I can show them off in color!

@megneato‘s DnD character, Evelyn Burke! I love listening about the misadventures of this morally grey and charmingly unethical enchantress 💚

While on a camping trip in the ton driga campaign Amaryllis realized @megneato’s character Anna Ashmore has a sweet tooth. Thus, s'mores make a great "I told you this would blow up in your face" statement whenever Anna makes a Questionable Moral Choice™

I’ve wanted to make a reference for this character for a while now, and earlier this year I was finally able to finish one!
This is my favorite dnd character and probably my favorite OC, Amaryllis Bouvardia! She’s a teifling nature cleric and a botany professor, although her endgame is to be a librarian in charge of the world’s biggest library, a resource for freedom for all countries and walks of life.
For backstory, Amaryllis was a botany professor at a prestigious school in the campaign’s world in the Eltyrian Empire. She found out her government was suppressing information on a staple crop for her country from an old textbook given to her by her favorite professor, and was sent into exile to a developing colony called Ton Driga by her headmaster so she’d just die and there’d be no scandal. However, she and the party met there and also uncovered a major conspiracy involving mind control magic and a plot to overthrow the empire, so now she’s a part of a revolution to fight the back against government.
She’s also very in love with the party’s wizard, a half-elf half aarakocra named Anna Ashmore who turns out to be a spy for the Queen but decides to choose her found family instead. Amaryllis wants to protect her from the government’s enchanter head, the Queen Sorceress, and fight for her freedom as well as her own from Eltyria’s oppressive regime.
Amaryllis was my first DnD character, and even though we’re not currently playing the campaign anymore I love to draw her everyday and think about her constantly. She’s helped me grow a lot and made me realize I want to be a librarian, which is why I’ve gone back to college and am pursuing an MLIS degree!
Maybe if I start to share my art again you’ll see more of her (I draw her A Lot), but for now I’m glad to share her character sheet!
Her first outfit is what she wears currently, and her second outfit is what she was wearing when she first came to Ton Driga. She’s autistic and her special interest is plants, so her outfit has very heavy plant motifs and all her magic looks like flowers!
I’m so happy to finally be able to share her, and I hope you like her!

These are all so wholesome and make for great draw the otp/draw the squad things for when you want to draw characters getting married but also be total dorks.
something i wish i had realized earlier: you can write poems on the same subject more than once. you can write, paint, draw the same thing over and over if you want to. you can spend your whole life making art about oranges. i think i always felt this pressure to get it right the first time like i couldn’t go back and use that inspiration again. but you can. you can go back and revisit it. you can pick up the conversation again and again if you have more to say.
Just to add to this a little: my local art museum had a temporary exhibit called Trucks. The artist painted and sculpted exclusively pickup trucks and semi-trucks. There were dozens of trucks in a variety of colors and styles and they were all extremely interesting to look at. The bio he provided explained that he picked trucks because he used to get so caught up in deciding on subject that meant or symbolised something that he never actually got around to making any art. By having his subject the same (trucks, every time) he could focus on the feeling he wanted to work out through his art. Trucks didn’t particularly make him happy, but they were a safe, comfortable avenue for him to explore unsafe, volitle emotions. Find your truck. Make art. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you to paint a car instead.
art activity: design a character based entirely around making them as much your friend’s type as possible, then gift it to them. half gesture of friendship, half call out.
This is an EXCELLENT way to unfunk your art block and also do something nice-but-terrible for/to your friends.
