Curses vs. Hexes: What’s the Difference?
If you were to look up the definition of both of the words on a search engine (hello, Google!) they are defined as follows:
Curse: (aside from meaning vulgar words) is “casting the evil eye or an evil spell upon someone.”
Hex: to curse someone.
Oh, dear sweet Google, you have tried your best but in this instance, every witch will tell you that you are wrong.
The general consensus is that ultimately, curses are worse than hexes; the target tends to suffer more at the hands of a curse than they do at the hands of a hex.
Curses:
Usually more serious than hexes.
Can live on through generations if that is what the caster intended.
Tend to be long-term in nature.
Usually, curses are borne of anger; of hatred and even a need for justice.
They can usually be reversed or undone; reversals can be done by the caster, and undoings may be done by the caster, target or a third party.
Hexes:
Often cast as a “one-off” piece of magick.
Their effects are apparent very quickly, but they are not long-term - seen sometimes as an instantaneous form of malevolent magick.
Hexes are borne of revenge and/or annoyance, and they usually cause irritation and subsequent annoyance to the target - hexes are a way for the caster make their target feel what they have been made to feel for a short time.
Due to their nature, hexes are usually over and done with quickly and do not require a reversal or undoing.
Both of these forms of magick, are forms of malevolent magick that is used for many reasons.
Some people curse their abusers, or people who have hurt them and some people hex their ex-partners, or someone who has brushed them up the wrong way. Like all magick, what you do is circumstantial and no one can tell you whether you should or should not perform magick of this kind (I am pro-curse and hex, but not everyone is).
Common Cursing & Hexing Components:
Taglocks:
Bodily fluids (blood, spit, semen, menstrual blood, tears, urine, etc.)
Fingernails.
Hair.
Photographs.
Personal possessions.
Poppets.
Usernames/nicknames/names.
Herbs/Plants:
Cayenne Pepper
Chilli
Lemon
Black Pepper
Thistle
Thorns
Poppies
Mold
Other items:
Nails (rusted for potency)
Razor blades
String/yarn/chord
Cemetery Dirt
War Water
Needles
Bones
Vinegar
Mirror (broken or whole)
Broken glass
Dead Wasps
You’ll notice that I’ve bunched the common ingredients for curses and hexes in one list - that is because these two are simply lesser and greater forms of the same kind of magick, so you must bear in mind what your intent is when you choose your spell/ritual ingredients.
Do you want to frustrate, annoy and irritate your target? Do you want to bring them bad luck? Do you want to bring them untold misery? Consider this carefully.
*The word “hex” is used in modern witchcraft to describe a mild form of baneful magic[k], but if you want to know more about the word’s history, click here for a fantastic post by @athenathewitch .
I made a super quick and simple tarot spread based on taking things “one day at a time”, for those of us who are feeling overwhelmed by a situation. This spread is designed to give fast advice on the day you’re reading for in a non-cluttered way. Hope this helps! I’d love to see people using this so feel free to tag me if you do! :)
Card One- Today’s Challenge: This card is basically self-explanatory. Pull a card to give you a hint about a problem or challenge you may face today.
Card Two- Solution to Problems that may Arise Today: This is the advice card. Pull a card to give you an idea of how to go about solving whatever comes up today. For example, pulling the Queen of Swords could indicate that you need to handle today’s issues with logic and controlled temper, and leave emotions out of it.
📖 Ideas for Studying Tarot 📖
First of all, a quick reminder: you don’t need to know everything about tarot to start reading – in fact, it’s not necessary to memorize anything at all! It’s perfectly fine to look up interpretations as you read, and does not lessen the legitimacy of your practice in the slightest.
Tarot isn’t a test you need to cram for, there’s no deadline to meet. What I love about tarot is that there is always more to learn and discover, both by researching the work of others and developing your own personal interpretations. Here are a few things I like to study order to develop a more nuanced, complex understanding of what each card means to me personally, and hopefully it provides inspiration for ways you can start or continue your tarot jourey!
✨Key Words ✨
Without a doubt the most popular method of learning the cards, and with good reason! Learning the most basic, simplified meanings of the cards provides a great foundation to build more complex interpretations.
✨Reversals ✨
A common misconception is that reversals always mean the opposite of the upright card definition, but this doesn’t need to be the case. Reversals can indicate delays, the card’s energy is being blocked, the energy is being taken too far or otherwise twisted, etc.
✨Symbolism ✨
What are astrological associations of the card? Numerological? What symbolism exists within the imagery of the card? What are the dominant colors in the image, what could those mean? If there are people in the card, how do you interpret their facial expressions and body language?
✨Contexts ✨
What does the card mean in the context of love? Career? As a person? As feelings? As a situation, obstacle, opportunity, etc.?
✨Combinations ✨
What are some cards that echo or reinforce the card’s meaning, and how about some that typically contradict it? What might those powerful combinations suggest if they show up together in a reading?
✨Advice ✨
What is the “lesson” of the card? What advice does it offer, what warnings does it hold?
✨ Extremes ✨
What is the most positive interpretation of this card, and what is the most negative?
✨ Quotes and Pop Culture ✨
What is a quote you associate with the card? How about a song/lyric, character, scene from a book/movie/etc.? How about people or situations from your own life?
✨ Preceding and Following Cards ✨
How does this card relate to the cards before and after it? What progress or development has happened in the card, and what still needs to happen?
….and this is how I ended up with a Google Doc of my tarot research that’s 100+ pages and growing, haha!

Shower Cleansing and Renewing Spell
tearun:
Items Needed:
Liquid Body Wash
Shampoo
Conditioner
A Shower
Step 1:
Undress, step into the shower, and wet yourself completely. Make sure your water is at a comfortable temperature.
Step 2:
Step out from the water, or turn the shower off if you need to, and cover yourself in soap, head to toe. Scrub yourself well, scratch off the old deodorant and dead skin, then put the shampoo in your hair, and scrub it just as well.
Step 3:
Charge the soap and shampoo with all your negative, stagnant, and unwanted or unneeded energy. Have it radiate all the things you want to rid yourself of, whether it be physical feelings, mental feelings, emotional feelings, energy, powers enacted on you, whatever.
Step 4:
Step back under the water, and let the negative energy run down and away with the water. Stand still, letting the excess run away naturally, then go to specifically washing away the soap in the less open areas. While you do this, chant:
Unwanted feelings, wash away. Unneeded energy, pour away. Stagnant power, go away. I am clean and new, for the day.
Step 5:
When you’re completely rid of soap and shampoo, take the conditioner, put it in your hair, and as you wash it out, chant:
Give me energy. Give me strength, to feel clean and fresh, through long lengths.
Step 6:
Take whatever negative energy you have left, and charge it into spit. Then, turn the water off, and with the last bit of water flowing down the drain, spit into it, and then say:
Out with the old. In with the new. Good riddance.
Step 7:
Dry off and get dressed. You should feel clean, cleansed, and renewed.
Spell Craft Sundays Week Two; Anxiety Stone
The end result of the spell is that you will have some, or all of your anxiety, fear, worry and anger removed from you and put into a stone which will contain the negative energy. It’s very good for helping with anxiety attacks, after arguments, etcetera. What you do with the stone afterwards is up to you, but I keep mine to use in future spells.
When people around me are causing others harm, I will use the stone in a spell that makes that person feel all of the stress and anxiety they are causing others and enables them to realise the effect of their actions. If however you just want the negative emotion gone, take the stone and bury it somewhere away from your house. Don’t touch it with your bare hands.
What you will need:
A clear quartz OR gem that absorbs energy OR a rock/pebble. Piece of cloth.
Two black candles (or one, or any colour candle that has to do with strength and NOT any specific positive emotion) Lighter
For this spell to be effective, you have to be in an unpleasant state. Worried, anxious, scared, angry, whatever. But it is this energy that you will be pushing into the stone, so you can’t channel what isn’t there :).
Light your candle(s) and place your stone in front of it if you are using one, between the candles if you are using two.
Close your eyes and grasp the stone tightly with both of your hands, close enough to the candles that you feel the heat of the flame.
Imagine all of the negative energy within you being transferred to the stone. Starting from your heart, slowly seeping through your arms and your fingertips as more and more of the hardship leaves your body.
Picture in your mind the elements aiding you in this, one by one. Say out loud how you encourage water to let the negativity flow through you, be washed out into the object in your hands. How you will the breath of air to blow away the struggle from your body and into the stone. How fire burns the suffering from your heart and lastly how the power of earth within the stone absorbs all, taking your burdens with might.
This part is dependent on your path. Thank the deity or power you hold sacred for helping you to have the magic within you to rid yourself of the badness. Thank the elements for helping you, and when you are done say “Blessed be.” and blow out the candles. Before the wax dries, pour a little on the stone and think of how the blackness symbolises all of the negativity you have just trapped within the stone. (I personally like to bind this all together with a pin prick of my blood, but I know some people don’t feel comfortable working blood magic so only do that if you know what you are doing and feel comfortable with doing so.)
Still thinking about how all of that bad energy is being contained, wrap the stone in cloth until you are no longer touching it. Cleanse yourself with sage, or whatever you use for that to remove any lingering negative magical vibes.
You are done! If you intend on keeping the stone for future spellwork keep it in something that contain the negative energy, like a protected jar or box. Also, try not to touch it. This is going to send some of that bad energy back your way.
Random Little Spell Idea
When you’re mad, light a match; as quickly as you can, channel all the anger you have into the flame, before it reaches your fingers. Envision your anger “burning down” and decreasing as the flame moves down the match. Put it out (hopefully before you get burnt) and your anger is gone.
You know how pennies are usually considered lucky? Well I took that idea and turned it on its head.
See this poor bastard? This is what I’ve called an Unlucky Penny. You can use it in a curse.
1. Find a grubby penny.
2. On the heads side, take a sharpie (obviously helps if its fine point because of the size) and write a symbol or name of whatever you’re wanting to receive the curse. If you can, and its a person you’re cursing, you could try to find one dated with their year of birth. (Cursing a whole organization? Find the founding year.) Extra personal.
3. Color the entire penny with a black sharpie. Black absorbs. You want it to take in energy and feelings.
4. Program the unlucky penny. Tell it your intent. Tell it to take your bad luck and give it to the person/thing you’ve written on the head. Copper is literally a conductor metal. The penny is an exchange. It’ll be meant for taking bad luck from you and giving it away to who is written on it, leaving you nice and shiny and fortunate instead.
5. Take it with you throughout your day. Any time you feel angry, frustrated, negative, get your skin touching that penny and push all the yucky feelings into it. Who’s having a bad day?? NOT YOU!
6. At the end of the day this thing will be a little ball of nastiness and rage. Get rid of it! In the most deplorable way you can think of in your devious mind. Just get it away from you and your house. You can opt to write a protection sigil on yourself for a little bit after, or the entire day you handle the penny (this is what I chose). Don’t want the nasty stuff coming back to you.
And that’s it! So in a way, it still is a lucky penny.
Just not for a certain someone/something else. ~

Goodbye, My Almost Lover: A Spell 🥀
Have an ex lover you just can’t seem to move on from? Just went through a bad breakup and want to take your mind away from them? Want a bit of closure? Here’s a spell for you, darling! ✨
(inspired by the song “Almost Lover” by A Fine Frenzy)
you will need:
• a pencil
• a sheet of paper
• dried rose petals (optional)
how to do it:
take the sheet of paper and pencil and write your ex-lover’s name. under their name, write the reason things came to an end. you can also make a list of things you dislike about them/other reasons the relationship ultimately went sour. finally, end your letter with a message to your ex. it can be a sentence, or the rest of space on the paper. just be sure to get all of your feelings out.
next, crumple the paper. (if you have rose petals, put them on the paper and fold it before crumpling.) then, destroy it. I burned mine, but there are other ways of doing it. you can bury it, flush it down the toilet, rip it into shreds, etc. whatever you do though, imagine all of those feelings you have for that person being destroyed and becoming non-existent.
when you’re finished, clean up your space and take a breath.
moving on is tough, but I believe in you. ❤️
