Writing is a process that often undergoes heavy edits… that includes responding to feedback.

I had no idea this post would resonate with so many people. I let my vitriol surrounding several comments I received on a recent update get to me and it spilled out into .gif form and it’s now morphed into the most widely shared thing I’ve ever posted. So many comments and tags have said things along the lines of, “This was why I quit writing” or “This is why I hate writing fanfic.” And that’s soul crushing to hear, but I can relate. 

But while there are some crappy and entitled readers, there are also many brilliant ones and I’m so grateful for them. The huge response to this post made me go back and skim through the comments on my old stories, and comments like the one below are about half the reason some of those stories got finished, even if it was months later. 

Comments like these are so rare, but when they do come up, they leave me staring at my computer screen, drumming my fingers on the keyboard, struggling to convey my feelings about how their words have touched my heart. These are the comments that take the longest amount of time to respond to and the ones that cause me to wear out my backspace key the fastest. 

It’s easy to complain, but it’s literally just as easy to praise, so I just wanted to take a moment to recognize all those dear and dedicated readers who have propped me up when I wanted to quit. Readers like you are why I keep writing, and why I even feel honored to do it on rare occasion. 

And fellow writers, keep your heads up if you can. :)

Recently I’ve struggled really hard to maintain momentum, just when I was starting to gain a pretty good amount of readers who actively seek out what I write. I’ve been dealing with moving for several months now, and the ways it’s been fucked up, and a few other things.

This really, really resonates with me. It’s hard not to feel like a failure when I know I could be writing more regularly if only this or that. I really am trying my best. Thanks to y’all that stick with me.

A sneak peek of the next chapter of If Not For You, which should be up hopefully by Sunday! I am endeavoring to get better about writing on a set schedule. The past couple of months have been hectic with worrying about moving, but it’ll be over soon.

“How’s Anakin?”

Shmi never fails to ask the question, even though she’s almost certainly had a call with her son earlier that evening. But she says that Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are more likely to tell her the truth should something be wrong, while Anakin will shrug it off in favor of not worrying her.

Qui-Gon smiles, leans against Obi-Wan, who wraps an arm around him. “He’s doing well. This break is proving to be good for him.”

“I think it’s proving to be good for all of you,” Shmi says, looking between the two of them pointedly. “Earlier he seemed more relaxed than I’ve seen him in quite some time.”

It almost pains Qui-Gon to hear that - everyone’s always tense and on guard these days, it’s hard not to be, but he is avidly not thinking about that right now. 

“He is. And good riddance,” Obi-Wan says with a laugh. “A relaxed Anakin tends to be a slightly less willful Anakin.”

Shmi just smiles, shakes her head fondly. “That’s my Ani,” she says.

Another result of that quick prompt about dark!Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan, and a much more sad one

Sometimes, if Qui-Gon looks at himself in the mirror for too long, the yellow of his eyes reminds him of the fire that consumed Obi-Wan's body. Fitting, really, since it had been that pyre to cast the unnatural hue in his eyes. But he doesn't need the gold irises to remember. No, he could never forget the day that Obi-Wan died, the day Qui-Gon lost himself. 

Honestly it hadn't even been that difficult. His mind tells him it should've been harder to abandon the Order that he'd given his life to. But it wasn't the Order that he really cared about, it was the Force. The same Force he'd reached into as he held Obi-Wan's broken body, called upon desperately as his Padawan gave his final few breaths, poured into the younger man to save him. And that Force had failed him in the one thing he wanted most. Fuck 'no attachments'. Any Jedi Master was lying if they said they didn't have at least a few, and many of them would be hard-pressed to give them up if it actually came to a life-or-death situation. They were all so high and mighty, but their resolves were hardly ever tested, they could all proclaim they'd choose good even when it meant sacrificing someone they loved but they'd never actually had to choose.

Qui-Gon had loved him. Without reserve, without limits. It hadn't felt wrong at all, the Force had told him it was right. Qui-Gon deserved one shred of goodness, didn't he? He never asked for anything, gave up all for the Order in his pursuit to do good, to be good. Could anyone blame him for wanting that beautiful golden man always at his side? Qui-Gon had never thought about leaving the Order before, but then, he'd never thought he would ever lose Obi-Wan either. He'd never considered how it would feel to have their bond severed as his lover lay dying, never considered what it would look like as he watched the spark in those eyes disappear. How in reaching for the most precious gift given to him, the Force, in order to save the other half of his soul, it would turn on him, taint his soul, and abandon him. 

It had broken him. Even now he doesn't feel bad about Falling. No one can declare him evil, no, he isn't some long-awaited return of the Sith. What he is is apathetic. Without Obi-Wan, nothing has meaning. He has no desire to seek out those who were hurt and help them. And though he can still use the Force, it had turned so much stranger, almost wailing in his ears rather than singing. Perhaps it was because instead of feeling sorry for what he'd tried to use it for, he scorns it. Blames it for letting Obi-Wan die. Hates it as much as he'd once loved it.     

No, he doesn't need the stark gold reminder of what happened to his Obi-Wan. But the Force seems determined to remind him that he was no longer her favored child of life, and she did not care that she'd stolen his one true happiness.
