N & Lillie || A Tour In Paradise!

N had only ever been to Alola once before, and never throughout his whole journey had he ever heard of the organisation - Aether Foundation. But upon his second journey, it was all the talk. A team of people dedicated to protecting and curing hurt Pokemon. It was definitely something that N was interested in. 

So here he was, sat in a boat, a passenger to one of the many Aether Foundation members, waiting patiently to arrive. All he had been told by the member was that one of the other members would be taking him on a tour of the facility, and to keep his arms and legs inside the boat.

Lillie squeezes through the sea of Aether Foundation employees, wanting to get to the dock for a breather. She’s been flipping through journals and preparing nonstop for her presentation in a few days. While not completely done yet, a break was long overdue. She lets Kyuu (A. Vulpix) jump out of her arms and watches the Pokemon stroll around the crates and sniff at each of them. She will do anything to entertain her Pokemon and give them more leg room, but when work calls she has no choice but to hole up inside for days on end.

She’s making her way to her usual resting spot near the water where she can dangle her legs over the edge, when she sees a slightly confused-looking man with a Zoroark. Beckoning Kyuu to follow her, she approaches the guy, wondering whether he is one of the many tourists who comes to visit after the foundation’s remodeling. Probably--what else can he be here for? Last time she checked, Aether wasn’t hiring. 

“Hey, can I help you?” she asks, giving the duo a friendly wave.

Today wasn’t eventful for the league, there were only one challenger today and it took the them two attempts before getting to Sun - the champion finally being back from his trip. The battle was well fought, but he had come victorious with three Pokemon still standing - Firecracker, Princey and Zenobia. He had complimented the challenger on the battle and offered advice for next time before waving them goodbye. 

Once the large doors closed, he let out a long sigh as his blue eyes moved around to look at the room around him. While excitement filled the room during battles, it always felt empty afterwards as well as he did. Being Champion was a daunting task for him at times like now but he couldn’t voice his complaints. He decided to release his Pokemon once more to tend to their injuries before showering them in pokebeans as a reward for their good work in the battle.

“O-oh! Hello, Sun. It’s been a while.” Lillie smiles at her friend. She goes up to him and offers a hug, aware of the watchful eyes of the receptionist. Shaking off the slight discomfort of being stared at, Lillie takes a step back and smooths out the creases on her clothes. “I forgot to make an appointment to see you, but you wouldn’t happen to be busy right now, would you?” 

While the road to the league is crawling with trainers, the building itself is surprisingly quiet. Lillie has seen only one other person exit a few moments ago. She wonders if it’s boring to be champion, wonders whether that’s why Sun left his post to wander around. She’s had a few glimpses of the paperwork that champions are faced with every day too--Moon has spilled her share of complaints to her, despite them being sparse and mostly subtle. She won’t call the job invigorating, to say the least, but maybe the thrill of challenges and meeting strong trainers and Pokemon alike make up for it--Lillie wouldn’t know. 

Kyuu (a. vulpix) makes a noise somewhat like a timid growl then, and Lillie remembers the reason behind this visit. She picks the Pokemon up, finding comfort within its surprisingly warm body and soft fur. 

“I have a favor to ask,” she begins. “I hate bringing this up, but I’m looking for a cure for my mother. And I believe you can help me with it.”

          Cheren is tired.

          Mind you, Cheren is ALWAYS tired – but there comes a point when even he can’t stand the meetings that the Unova League recommends (read: requires) him to attend. Once, there had been a time that he had found every detail of the region’s budget and future ideas utterly fascinating. But what has since become a wild curiosity has faded to a mild interest over the years.

          He could have sworn that they’d talked about this subject once before, in another hall, in another town, weeks ago. Why bring it up again?

Lillie realizes too late that Cheren has turned around and caught her staring at his phone. She flinches back, heat crawling onto her cheeks. Well, that’s embarrassing. How is she going to bring it up now during the coffee break when they’ve made awkward eye contact? Not that she really was planning on it anyway...What if he turns out to be one of those huge fanboys with no shame? Though truly, he doesn’t look like it. But if there’s one thing Lillie learnt from her adventure in Kanto and all across different regions, it’s that looks can be very, very deceiving.

So instead of waiting for coffee break, she decides to just act on impulse. Learn from her friends for once, and not dilly dally, pondering all day. She leans forward on her chair and taps Cheren’s shoulder. Her brain catches up with her actions a few seconds later and she considers making up a stupid excuse for getting his attention--

No, she’s going to do it. She’s not going to run away in shame anymore, even if it’s just some stupid hobby like reading fanfiction. She’s going to own it. Lillie feels mildly embarrassed for having to give herself a pep talk on something so minor and mundane, but hey, everyone starts from somewhere, right? What should she say? Ask him about his favourite tropes? Fandoms? But what if Cheren just accidentally clicked on the website, and that he doesn’t really read fanfiction? Lillie’s mind races as she thinks of a not so probing, not so vague question. She half-wishes that Cheren didn’t notice the tap and will ignore it.

Lillie doesn’t remember the trek up to the league being this hard. Though truth be told, it probably wasn’t a good idea to immediately head up after a dizzy boat ride from Unova. She still feels the nausea and a mild headache--a whimpering Kyuu (Alolan Vulpix) doesn’t help the situation at all. She cradles the Pokemon, sure to protect it from the occasional jutting edges of the cliff. Her ride pager’s signal has been conveniently jammed--she suspects it to be of Bolt’s (Rotom) fault since the Pokemon had been rather unsatisfied with the frequent boat rides she’s been taking. Said Pokemon is also uncharacteristically quiet, but Lillie doesn’t have it in her to question her partner. 

She rounds a corner too quickly and makes eye contact with a young ace trainer. She really doesn’t want to battle right now--no, not when she’s about to throw up, or when she’s about to fall over from severe sleep deprivation. But tradition’s tradition, and she tosses out Mimu (Mimikyu). Maybe she can deliberately lose to make the battle quick? But she can’t bear to dishearten her Pokemon--

The ace trainer saves her from a serious bout of indecisiveness. He offers to heal up her party instead of battling, and Lillie figures she must really look like a mess right now to warrant that kind of reaction. She offers the trainer a Casteliacone from her previous adventures and moves on, glad to finally see the building. Just a final stretch left...

Kyuu jumps out from her arms then, racing down the road. Lillie yells at the Pokemon, turning heads here and there. She’s embarrassed, but more concerned about the safety of her Pokemon. Though the mountain’s been thoroughly inspected by the construction company and monitored yearly, loose boulders still come tumbling down occasionally. Lillie won’t stand a chance against them, much less Kyuu. She chases after her Vulpix, kicking up dust and pebbles. Wearing a white skirt and sneakers was another mistake she made. Seems like she’ll have to do a boutique run later.

When she’s finally caught up with her Pokemon, Lillie’s at the entrance of the League. She brushes the dirt off Kyuu’s paws and scolds her briefly. Pushing the door open, she lets Kyuu scamper in before making her way to the reception desk. That’s when she realizes that she totally forgot to make an appointment.

Lillie feels bad, oh, she really does, because here’s Moon opening up to her about the five years they spent apart. But god, jetlag. Her head feels heavier by the second and she leans in even more against Moon’s shoulder, until she’s not even on her shoulder anymore–oops. Lillie doesn’t realize that she has completely invaded Moon’s personal space and is now resting on her lap. No, she only registers the beckoning call of sleep and drifts off to dream, comforted by Moon’s quiet voice.

“Don’t get me wrong, stars are…wonderful, and so captivating to watch. But they are fickle and get covered by clouds sometimes…those nights are the loneliest. Moon did text her about meeting her at the dock, right? Lillie double checks her message log on Rotom. The text is still there--no misreading here. She peers up towards the shore again, but she can’t make out any silhouette that resembles her friend. She’s panicking a little inside, even though she really doesn’t have to because, god, it’s Alola. Her home region. She’s not even sure what she’s so jittery about. Maybe it’s because she’s been away for so long, travelling from one region to the next in search for a cure. Is she afraid of the changes that quietly seeped through the once-familiar towns and beaches? Is she afraid of seeing Gladion again and realizing how much time the family has missed spending together after being shattered, again and again? Lillie’s grip on her hat tightens. She wants to put it on, hide from the world like she used to, but she’s determined to be different this time. Especially this time, when she’s coming back for the first time in five years. She can’t tell whether she’s puffing up her chest for herself, or whether she’s just proving a point to her close friends. She wants to show how she’s matured; wants to show to them that she’s caught up, at last. But what if they’ve moved on?

Lillie glances at the message one more time. Moon says she’ll definitely be there to welcome her back, and that she has a special getaway place just for the two of them. Just for the two of them? Lillie can’t help but grin a little, speculating just where on earth her friend will take her. Warmth flushes through her body, and she momentarily forgets about her worries. She’s taken back to her adventures with Moon, Sun and Hau. If only she could relive the days when they didn’t know better. Lillie can’t place a finger exactly on her feelings--it isn’t just bittersweet nostalgia, or a hopeless sense of longing, not quite. It’s closure that she’s chasing after, but not exactly either, because she’s not looking to end anything. Aether isn’t going anywhere. Gladion’s patching it up and she’s grateful that her sibling got that covered. So what is it that she’s looking for? 

Drowned in her own thoughts, Lillie doesn’t notice how close the ship is until it bumps gently against the rubber tires lining the pier. She hurriedly stuffs her belongings into the bag, grateful that nothing tries to jump out anymore. Making a mental note to pay Nebby a visit soon--if Sun is even in town, that is--she makes her way to the lower deck.

Lillie isn’t sure how she ended up in this Unova conference about harnessing a trainer’s potential aid in research and sustainability. She’s pretty sure it’s her PI’s fault that the whole lab ended up in the wrong meeting--but hey, it’s not like she’s footing the travel expenses. Besides, it’s been a while since her last visit to Unova. She wonders if her host family is still around, or whether they’ve finally decided to return to Kanto.

The current speaker is blabbering on about how the region should mandate Pokedexes for aspiring trainers, and how those devices can be funded by a portion of battle money--which, according to him, will increase as all trainers are more prepared to take on foes with the help of a Pokedex. Lillie can’t help but think how big of a loophole this idealistic reel seems to be overlooking--doesn’t this just increase the overall competitiveness? Besides, the pool of money that the government can take from essentially stays the same given how rarely non-trainers decide to join in on the battle scene. Eventually people are going to see this as taxing battles, and--

Lillie is about to continue her internal ramble when a familiar logo catches her eye on a phone screen in the row in front. Seems like she isn’t the only one who is frustrated and baffled by the current speaker’s pitch. This other person, though, straight out decides to tune the ignorant fool out. Lillie feels bad about spying on people’s screens, but she just wants to make sure...

Sure enough, it’s AO3. Lillie looks away once she’s sure of the discovery, fearful of someone catching her prying. And the brave soul who’s mindlessly perusing selected fiction works...Lillie tries to figure out who has short black hair. It’s not much to go off from, but ah! The telltale stray strand of hair sticking out saves her from further postulations.

But can it be? Respected gym leader Cheren? Lillie feels her curiosity getting the better of her, and she genuinely considers approaching the man during coffee break. But how would she bring it up? Doesn’t that require revealing what she does to indulge herself too? Maybe it’s better to keep this knowledge a personal memento of this dumb conference, but Lillie is dying to know what the gym leader reads--and oh, does he write too? She fidgets in her seat, easily switching her focus from the dry speeches to her current dilemma.

Lillie wants to rub her eyes, but her gloved fingers are soaked with chemicals. She opts for her shoulder instead and nearly pokes herself blind. This is the fourth time a spill has occurred. Luckily, it is just nutrient-loaded medium, so Lillie is not entirely bothered. She removes her gloves, calling up Bolt (Rotom) while she wriggles her fingers. It’s barely awake and she checks the time: 2AM. No wonder it’s so dark outside.

She doesn’t want to disappoint the professor, but she’s probably doing more damage to the cells at this point. Putting away the pipettes and the culture dishes, Lillie decides that she at least needs a break. Maybe she’ll come back in an hour, or maybe early in the morning after a quick nap. Either way, she needs to get out of the lab and breathe in some non-latex-smelling air. She puts away her lab coat, shuts the hood door and packs her things.There’s one other person keysmashing with his face in the office. Probably has a submission due the next day--Lillie shakes him awake before leaving. That’s when she remembers the most recent submission to her publishing firm. There’s no strict deadline for feedback, but Lillie hates making people wait. She is unsure whether to stay and finish reviewing the draft, or to just call it a day/night. The lack of sleep makes decision-making even harder. In the end, Lillie sits for a whole ten minutes before Bolt quietly tells her to grab something to eat or drink first. Sometimes even the sarcastic, blabbering Pokemon can’t help but show a softer side.

Lillie grabs her bag and half-stumbles out of the building. The streetlamps are blurring and flickering tonight, the floor shaking and uneven. She makes a few inevitable slips and trips, and somehow manage to make it to the convenience store in one piece. Ordering a coffee with double shots, she’s not sure whether even the drink will help. She’s been up since 4AM getting ready for an important experiment, the events of which she’s conveniently blocked out from her brain in her sleep-deprived haze. Bolt, though, is not as lucky, and feels guilty for wasting so much grant money on a faulty procedure. Both are not feeling great as they exit the store--it’s been a bad day.

Caught up in their own worlds--one in a semi-dreaming sleep-walking daze, the other thoroughly considering what went wrong this morning--both don’t notice the pole in the middle of the pavement. Lillie, although dragging her steps, still manages to make a full-on collision with the object. Her head rings against the metal and the hot coffee sloshes messily all over her shirt and Bolt. Pressing one hand against the pole to steady herself, Lillie finds herself resorting to shoulder-massaging her temple since her other hand is occupied again. She holds back the tears and chokes back a sniffle, but the pain doesn’t let up.
