hell, even if he had done the math, tony wasn’t sure. however, the knotting in his gut and the reoccurring headaches were enough to clue him in that it wasn’t sufficient. “ what about you? how are you holding up? “

‘-- who says all of it’s for you?’ there’s a little smirk, haphazard and an attempt at humor, as he raises his own mug to his lips. it’s strange, the heaviness between them--and the fact that he’s breaking it feels even more foreign. gaze remaining on the other, he exhales, humor disappearing to exhaustion and a frown on his features, palm flat against his face.

‘we’re getting too old for this, you know. i thought i was finished fighting other men’s wars when i left active duty.’ other men--rhodey doesn’t say it’s wrong, doesn’t say it’s right. he’s a soldier, above all things--he doesn’t question his orders, that much is embedded in him. this isn’t about him though, and he changes the subject. ‘forget the coffee, you should get some sleep. you look rough. like, very rough. morning after an MIT frat party rough.’
