Being an audio engineer for an erotic audio storytelling app was never something Michael Robinavitch ever thought he'd end up doing for a career. His life had never panned out exactly like he thought it would; his CV a mixture of odd jobs, moving around the country, and picking up skills here and there.

He'd worked on a few TV shows back in LA for a while, then got sucked into podcasting, which he hated, and then, when he found himself back home in Pittsburgh, a friend put him in touch with someone from the production team at PittLit, recommending him for a job opening.

He'd sent them some of his work, and the next thing he knew, he was being sent audio files of spicy scenes to edit and mix. He'd blushed the first time he'd listened to it, the woman's voice breathy and sultry as she described going down on her best friend. It didn't take long for him to ignore the subject of the audio and focus on the job. It all just becomes noise when you listen to it day in, day out.

It's not a bad job at all.

The work is easy, the pay isn't bad, he likes choosing his own hours, and while he's coy about the details of his job to anyone who asks, he's proud of the work he does. He's all for playing his small part in helping the app's listeners get off to the stories.

He normally has a few projects on the go at any one time, usually because he's waiting on feedback from the production team while he works on something else, so every day starts with checking his email to see what work he has waiting for him.

When he finally lowers himself down into the chair just after 9 am and opens his email inbox, there's a new file waiting for him, a newly recorded story titled 'My Medic Amour'. They all have slightly cringe names like that, and Robby shakes his head in amusement.

He imports the file over into his editing program, gulping down some of his coffee while the file loads. The program dings to let him know it's ready, and he clicks the play button without hesitation.

As soon as the audio plays, Robby's mouth falls open.

I raise the secret-relationship Rabbot bet and say: they come out publicly, but no one believes them.

They’ve been friends for decades, and dating doesn’t really change anything between them, so no one at work notices anything unusual. Hugs at the start or end of a shift, casual conversations about whose place they’re staying at that week, being each other’s screensaver, making plans for their days off, it’s all normal stuff. Everyone assumes they’re just two lonely older men who lean on each other. Jack with his dead wife, Robby with his endless rotation of women, who would even think they were dating?

It simply isn’t a conclusion anyone jumps to.

They’re not big on PDA either. Sure, they hug, pat each other on the shoulder, drift too close into each other’s personal space, but that’s just what friends do, right? And they are best friends. There are no kisses on the mouth or openly intimate touches. Robby has never been one for that kind of display, and he wants to preserve at least the appearance of professionalism around the pittlings. He doesn’t want to set a bad example about workplace relationships for the younger generation.

So when they start dating and actually tell people, everyone assumes they’re joking. That it’s one of Jack’s bits. That Robby is just tired of being asked about his love life and wants people to stop. Jack and Robby are both surprised by everyone’s reaction, but whatever, it’s not like they need, or even want, anyone’s blessing.

Whenever Jack mentions having a date with Robby, people just snort and assume he means they’re going to watch a game with beers in hand or hit a sports bar to shoot the shit like middle-aged men do.

Dana is the only one who believes them immediately. In fact, she already knew, she just never said anything because she wanted to see how long it would take them to tell her. She’s thrilled, because it’s about damn time, and she thinks it’s hilarious that everyone assumes they’re lying or doing a bit. If they could only see how clingy and disgustingly touchy they are outside of work, no one would doubt them for a second.

It goes on like that for months, until Jack finally gets fed up and, at shift change, in front of the entire day and night staff, grabs Robby and plants a filthy, open-mouthed kiss on him. Just so no one has any doubt that he is absolutely serious about his relationship with Robby.

I keep thinking about the way each of the younger members of the team each reflect different parts of Robby, they way he sees different parts of himself in them, both positive and negative:

McKay His gut with sensing when something is wrong, his empathy and compassion, his protectiveness of his patients. Can sometimes jump to conclusions about people when bias gets in the way (but both are willing to learn when it is pointed out to them).

Santos The brash, riskier, tenacious side of him, the sarcastic, dark-humoured part. The part that does finds fun in what he does. Does what he think is right, ignoring the consequences. Can get tunnel visioned.

Whitaker The way he keeps being knocked down but gets up again, the part of Robby that sees the good in people, that goes above and beyond, the part that just wants to help, even to his own detriment. Javadi His smarts, his medical knowledge, his awkwardness in some situations, being a people pleaser. Mohan His ability to connect with patients, put them at ease, his stubbornness, getting too involved in his patients, letting his emotions cloud his judgement. Langdon His technical skills, his quick thinking, and also his defensiveness and ruthlessness. Mel The more whimsical and sensitive side of Robby and also his self-sacrificial side. Everyone else comes first.

rewatching s1 and i'm struck by how, at the end of s1, when robby has his first on-screen panic moment and gets shunted back to a memory of working during COVID, it's specifically a moment when people are looking to him for leadership

one nurse/doctor says: Robby, we need to intubate here

the next says: Dr. Adamson just went down with a pulse ox of 65.

and robby doesn't respond to them. for the audience, who has just watched the first hour of robby being in charge of the ED, we read his indecision as obvious panic and stress. but with the context of the rest of the show, we now know that that was probably one of robby's first moments being the person everyone looks to ("you don't look to others, others look to you")

dr. adamson just went down--whether that means he got sick earlier and is now tanking, or he literally just fell sick, either way it means robby is new to being the only one in charge. we know from later flashbacks that a lot of robby's trauma around dr. adamson's death has to do with the guilt robby feels, and thinking he didn't do enough to save dr. adamson, or didn't make the right choices ("we could've kept him a couple more days on ECMO")

robby's trauma around dr. adamson isn't just that he lost a beloved mentor, it's that one of the first things robby did as chief of the ED was make a choice that killed dr. adamson. his trauma is inextricable from the fact that he is responsible for so many lives and from the very beginning, he believes he failed to meet that responsibility

The first stop on Robby's sabbatical is, apparently, Jack's bed. This fic takes place on July 5th, the morning after s2 ends and it's so aching and tender and was truly the fic I needed after the season ended

An AU where Jack is a charge nurse starting at the Pitt, instead of a EM physician. I don't read a ton of AUs, but I really like luciferinasundaysuit's writing (they have another rec down below) and I was smart for reading bc this is such a fun twist on rabbot. Jack and Robby are the characters we know, but with a little slant.

rosemary; that's for remembrance by liteacademeia; mature, 14k (archive warning for graphic depictions of violence, but imo, nothing that would bother anyone who watches the pitt)

After Robby goes missing, his motorcycle found wrecked five miles off the road of a rural highway, Jack drops everything to search for him. The sense of urgency and immediacy in this fic is amazing, as is Jack's palpable love for Robby. I loved this fic so much.
