Hey btw hetalia fandom I think u guys need to check how you draw Turkey and other Asian characters especially if u are not from these places because some of y’all are super Orientalist with how you draw them

I can’t speak on other characters except Turkey because I’m Turkish but you guys really need to watch how “exotic, mysterious” and just. Aladdin-y you guys are drawing him

And I think Hima is partly to blame because especially with Turkey and Egypt he’s given them a sort of mystique to them (like Turkey’s mask, I think it’s cool but why is it there, and also why is Egypt so quiet) (and why were they both white highkey) which plays into certain stereotypes about people from the MENA region that were highly perpetuated in the west

Our culture IS quite different from those in western nations but we are an actual people with cultures outside of being “exotic” and “mysterious”. It’s worth noting these stereotypes have historically hurt people, from these regions, bastardised our cultures and practices, and I think as a fandom we should collectively learn to stop doing this

There’s merit in certain portrayals, because I think it’s alright having Turkey be a sort of overarching and intimidating figure as the Ottoman Empire, one that was sort of seen as different in comparison to western empires that functioned very differently, but there’s safe ways to portray this that aren’t super orientalist and racist

This isn’t targeted at anyone or any art I’ve seen specifically recently, but I do think a lot of Hetalia fans who aren’t from this region get a bit comfortable with certain portrayals

Anyway that’s the rant
