every time a cis girl becomes a trans man is a good thing actually. the whole world should celebrate. if you came out as transmasc recently and someone had something to say about not needing more men in the world you should make them feel like shit about it. you dont deserve that. your becoming a man makes the world a better place - no ifs, no caveats, no exceptions. you being a man is a good thing because you are trans. you are not abandoning women, or abandoning feminism. you dont now have to dedicate your existence to defending women and being a selfless knight. you dont have to spend every social interaction trying to be as quiet as possible so you can be one of the good ones. you dont have to make yourself small. you get to be angry, sad, excited, horny, tired, scared, you get to expect comfort and rest and patience, just as much as you did before. you haven't betrayed anyone. you are a man now. we're so happy that you are.

y'all are losing the plot. let me make myself abundantly clear:

i do not believe transmasculine people should have to unilaterally defend all women. i believe transmasculine people deserve to be defended and vulnerable, because they are at significant risk. in fact, i believe cis women should be more concerned with defending trans men. i believe that transmasculine people are too pressured to repress their vulnerability and not talk about their problems in favor of ending every thought with 1000 caveats about how it's obviously actually about women and all women always have it worse no matter what, and that they feel pressured to put themselves at disproportionate, unnecessary risk of transphobic violence just to avoid being called a gender traitor.

in addition, this post is not about women. it is about trans men and their rights, and their lives, and their needs, and the fact that they deserve to center that.

likewise, i believe that transmasculine people need language to describe a framework of how systemic transphobia affects them specifically, and that that systemic transphobia goes way deeper than just what i discussed in this post. frankly it's kind of insulting to claim that this little positivity post is all there is to it.

so i will state again: this post is about TRANS MEN. DO NOT FUCKING DERAIL!

I just read an article about a man in Missouri who collected a woman’s skeletal remains he found in a cave and kept them in his house for roughly 60 years until his kids surrendered them to the local PD. I wish I could say this is the first time I’ve read about something like that happening but no.

I should clarify that the remains were declared to not historical in nature (usually signifying remains over 100 years old) and the death seemed suspicious but because of the 60 years that elapsed between her being found and the authorities being notified of her death, it is unlikely she will ever be identified and returned to her family. A 25-35 year old woman who was likely murdered in the 40s or 50s. Sitting in a stranger’s house for decades. It makes my skin CRAWL.

Historical or contemporary, unearthed grave or recent accident/violent death, DO NOT TAKE HUMAN REMAINS HOME WITH YOU WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU??? That is a PERSON.

I am trying to understand the point you are attempting to make by saying “bones aren’t a person” in the context of this post as human remains are, indeed, what remains of a person and every culture has unique ways of honoring their dead. Is it semantics to you? Is it an attempt to trivialize the humanity of remains that have been mishandled and/or stolen?

this also becomes especially contentious within communities who have historically had remains disturbed and put up for display by colonizers. disclaimer: i can only really speak to american law and the experiences of indigenous peoples.

i am an anthropology student. i am also an indigenous person. much of the direction of current anthropological training centers around humanizing remains, people, and cultures that we may not be immediately familiar with. it is our responsibility to treat fellow humans as fellow humans, who have the same worth, dignity, and a right to be at rest as we do.

anthropology as a field began with collecting. cabinets of curiosity, “oddity” collections, the like. many of the human skeletal remains in these collections belonged to people on the margins who were victimized one way or another by colonial projects— indigenous people from africa and turtle island, disabled people, mentally ill people, people from ethnic minorities. these “anthropologists”— white men collectors— had the same attitudes towards human remains as these commenters do.

it is a sense of privilege and entitlement over others. putting a coat of paint on it by saying you are yourself marginalized or are being “respectful” or that you’re using these remains for religious purposes does not matter. it’s the same thing. if you do not have the express consent (given while alive, in a clear state of mind) of someone to use their remains, you have absolutely no right to take, move, or keep them in any fashion.

when you steal bones—regardless of where from—you are no better than those early colonizer anthropologists. leave bodies be, and if something looks like a crime, you should make an attempt to report it. BIPOC in the US and Canada are especially vulnerable to murder, trafficking, and are often overlooked (see: MMIP/MMIW2s)

furthermore, if you come across remains and attempt to sell them any way—and those remains happen to be native american remains—it is entirely possible that you will be in violation of NAGPRA (native american graves protection and repatriation act)

aside from being deeply morally reprehensible colonizer behavior, this can land you time in federal prison, steep fines, and a felony on your record depending. don’t be a piece of shit.

could someone explain to me like I'm five why fleas appear unable to take fall damage? I could send a flea straight to the bottom of the grand canyon and I don't think the little guy would get injured at all. wtf

fleas survive long falls because their terminal velocity isn't fast enough for it to die from the impact. they're so small and light that air resistance slows them down enough that it's a slow falling speed and has a low impact force once it reaches the ground. it wouldn't matter whether the flea fell from 10 feet or 10,000 feet because it could only fall at a rate at or below that small terminal velocity for the entire duration of the fall

it's kinda like a flea is a self contained parachute. parachutes are effective in allowing humans to survive falls because they vastly increase the air resistance, which then decreases the terminal velocity to a slower and safe amount. the flea's air resistance is really large, so it can't fall fast enough to hit the ground really hard and die from the impact. they just float down and continue on with their day
