They woke up the next morning, once again both squeezed into Hiccup’s bed. Which created all kinds of problems for Hiccup. —First of all, he woke up at the same time as Jamie, and Jamie sent him a smile so impish Hiccup refused to believe he wasn’t related to Jack.

How did Hiccup spend his thousand + years as a spirit?

This question has been swirling in my mind for more than a month.

Of course chapter 43 of OTNWAS destroyed me (in the best way, kudos to @jjackfrost for creating THE masterpiece <3) I really needed to let my feelings out and bring Hiccup's past to light.

There are some scenes with Jack, but I intentionally decided to focus on the first thousand years of Hiccup and Toothless as wind spirits and Hiccup's life on Berk, with his family and friends. And the loss that came with it.

(AND I KNOW I KNOW, the ending might be a bit bitter, but if you watch the animatic backwards it finishes with Hiccup who finally recognizes Jack <3)

first time trying out rendering burn marks, I hope it's alright ^^

my headcanon is that he has A LOT of nasty scars from the red death fight. his people saw them as the symbol of his victory but everytime he looks at them he just remembers the sheer dread of almost dying, his mind filling with "what ifs".

he may have gotten used to his leg, but the burn marks were another story entirely. he almost never talks about them and like to keep it hidden under clothes most of the time.

Here they all are! I wasn't super happy with how I drew Pitch (he was the first one I did, so I had to loosen up before going back over him again), so I changed a few things about his face.

Out of all of them, Sandy was the hardest to draw. Capturing an all-knowing eternal being who's also a mischievous little shit and sometimes really cute, is really fucking hard :T

Oh and that's my human version of Bunny in the upper left corner 🙂‍↕️

I'm definitely not the only one with this observation, but today I was watching ROTG for the one millionth time and one thing I always notice is how Jack reacts to touch (because, relatable lol):

And it got me thinking about the start of the movie when Jack first experiences someone phasing right through him:

Then at the movie's end, even after he understands Jamie can see & interact with him, he's still a little jumpy during their hug:

The character growth of this scene aside (he's finally believed in/perceived and this is still a nice surprise for him), my own headcanon is that maybe he doesn't like the feeling of being phased through (either how it physically feels, or just the reminder it gives him of his permeability). Hence why he instinctively flinches away in anticipation when he's touched/almost touched.

That said, I do think there's also an element of him being nervous by nature. Any time he's under even the smallest amount of threat, he's immediately on the defensive, for example. That could be because (even though he's been around for 300 years) he's young and under confident, or else it's residual anxiety after his fall into the ice, or maybe even a personification of his element's properties (ice as brittle and precarious, the quick & easily disturbed nature of snowflakes, and so on). Or it could be all three if you want! Pick n' mix.

Anyway, the opening scenes of the movie focus a lot on his reaction to the new sensation of someone walking right through him. Which, given how intentional this movie is in so many ways, doesn't feel like some throwaway detail (to me at least).
