Time for a New Chapter, @danielhowell ?
Lynne Cox is an accomplished American open water swimmer. Twice, she held the record for the fastest crossing of the English Channel. Cox was the first woman to swim the Cook Strait and the first to swim the Straits of Magellan and around the Cape of Good Hope. Cox swam the Bering Strait from American soil to Soviet soil in 1987, at the height of the Cold War.Ā
Look at her.Ā
I know open water swimming isnāt really glamorous, but Lynne Cox is arguably one of the greatest overlooked athletes of the 20th century.Ā
And quite possibly a mutant.Ā
She can withstand water temperatures that you or I would die from because of her training and her bodyās unique reaction to cold (you know how the blood will leave your fingers and toes when itās cold, to preserve heat? her whole body does that, pooling her blood in her core and insuring her body temperature stays toasty where it counts).
She funded the Bering Strait swim herself, clearing out her bank account when she couldnāt get corporate sponsors. After she succeeded (to almost everyoneās surprise: if you get in the Bering Sea without serious gear you generally just die) Gorbachev mentioned her during treaty talks with Nixon: āLast summer it took one brave American by the name of Lynne Cox just two hours to swim from one of our countries to the other. We saw on television how sincere and friendly the meeting was between our people and the Americans when she stepped onto the Soviet shore. She proved by her courage how close to each other our peoples live.ā
She wasnāt just the first woman to swim the Strait of Magellan. She was the first person to make it across.Ā
On top of setting multiple world records, she swam a mile+ to the coast of Antarctica, in just a bathing suit, and did not die.Ā
Sheās swum over 50,000 miles.Ā
And look at her. This is a photo from when she was young, at the peak of her career and setting records all over the world. She is a great athlete. She is a human who can do things most humans would die trying. Iām sitting here at 1 AM getting all teary eyed because this is the first time Iāve looked up a photo of her and I am so surprised, so gratified, so overwhelmed to find out that this world record setter, this literal superhuman, has nearly the same body type as me.Ā
Since they wouldnāt let her be a fantasy creature in a video game, she just did it in real life, I guess.
Anyone who thinks there is just one athletic body type isnāt paying attention during the Olympics opening ceremonies.
Her body type is optimized for her sport. The shape of her body and the presence of fat both provide insulation to keep her core warm while she swims.
A lot of open water swimmers arenāt this chunky, but thatās because most of them are actually triathletes, and their body type is a compromise between the ideals for the different sports.
There really is no one way to be fit and athletic. For some reason, we tend to get ourselves hung up on the body type of track and field athletes, especially that of marathon runners (who tend to carry almost no extra fat) as the ideal.
Dude HOLY FUCK sheās a badass.
When Lynn Cox was training to swim the English Channel at 14, her practice regimen had her swimming off Long Beach pier from 3am-6am each morning and then going to high school.Ā Her coach asked that she be excused from morning gym so that she could have extra time to shower and do homework. Her gym teacher refused to allow it because she believed that Lynn Cox was too chubby and too clumsy to be missing 9th grade gym.Ā
And hereās a joyful, more recent photo of this tremendous athlete.
itās almost like human body fat isnāt evil and is actually an evolutionary advantageā¦
literally all of onlineĀ āstan twitterā language is just aaveĀ thatās been popularized and generalized by nonblacks to the point where black people are the ones who look out of pocket for using words we came up with because funny internet persona #23904378 wants to useĀ ādeadassā andĀ āfinnaā in every other sentence
can white people please reblog this because all i see in my notes are people of color and yāallĀ need to own up to the fact that you overuse aave as well (looking @ u white gays)

Chapter One of Four (so far)
Summary
Phil is intrigued by the hypnotist at the YouTuber Summit in 2016 and finds himself oddly fascinated in hypnotism. Is Dan helping him find one for a video for Phil's benefit... or Dan's? Some timeline mixing where Phil's fortune telling video takes place in an earlier time. They're living in London apartment #1 in this story.Ā Ā
Phil
āI donāt believe in it,ā said Dan, snorting. āAnd I canāt believe you do either. Although I shouldnāt be surprised after the Tarot and the Magic 8 Ball.ā
āDan, after what we watched, how can you not believe in it?ā said Phil. He lowered his voice, suddenly aware of the other people on the plane around him. āAnyhow, didnāt you see how Joey acted?ā
āHe acted like he was in front of an audience of YouTubers filming him,ā scoffed Dan, pulling out his earbuds and connecting them to his phone. āCome on, Phil, hypnotism is bullshit.ā He turned suddenly, cheekily grinning at his friend. āIād be more likely to believe in Australian banana fortune telling.ā And with that, Dan put in his earbuds, leaned back, and closed his eyes.
Phil sat there, wide awake, thinking over what Dan said. He was used to his roommateās skepticism, and usually it didnāt bother him. But this time he found himself reliving that afternoonās events over in his head. He had asked Joey about his experience and Joey had sworn it was completely genuine. Phil hadnāt volunteered. And, of course, neither had Dan. The fear of the unknown, of forced audience participation, had left them both as watchers, rather than participants. But five days later and Phil still had it on his mind. Something about it had struck a chord with him.
He looked over at Dan sleeping peacefully already and fought the urge to brush a barely-there curl out of his face. Their rush for the airport had left them both sweaty and Danās āhobbit hairā had started to appear. Phil smiled softly. It was his favourite Dan hair. Phil leaned back, glancing once more at Dan and then closed his own eyes, picturing the event.
āAny volunteers?ā the hypnotist had asked. Phil imagined himself raising his hand. No⦠he imagined Dan raising his hand. Philās lips curved ever so slightly into a smile and he put his earbuds on.
hello! since touring is starting soon and their live shows arenāt going to be/havenāt been as frequent and being content deprived is sad, we (@softstripes & @occasionalester) wanted to begin hosting stream sessions where we can all watch dnp videos together!Ā
What exactly does that mean?
we want to use rabb.it to host streams where we would watch dan and phil videos with other tumblr phandom members!Ā for anybody unfamiliar with rabb.it, on it you can watch videos with friends while video, audio and text chatting at the same time, which means we can all react to and cry over videos together! but first, we want to start by asking for your opinions on what would be the best times to host these streams, and also what you would like to watch! we created a questionnaire where you can tell us all this in a simple and organized way which can be found here. weāll decide when our first stream will be depending on the responses we get so we donāt have exact dates yet, though we hope to make these streams a weekly or bi-weekly thing!
This all sounds cool, butā¦
ā¦why rabb.it? rabb.it can be used all on devices (phones, laptops, etc) and is completely free! but in the poll there will be an option to suggest another app/website if you believe thereās a better option. ā¦do i have to show my face? video chat is absolutely not necessary! you can use the text chat and have a good time that way. ā¦iām not good at talking to new people. we completely understand feeling uneasy towards the interaction and you would never be forced to interact if you chose not to, though we do encourage it! youāll be surrounded by people who love dnp just as much as you do, so it would be a great time to share urls, make new friends, talk about favorite moments, etc!
if there are any questions/concerns/suggestions you have for us, please feel free to send them!! and please answer our questionnaire so we know how to best host these things :-)
please reblog to spread the word!! and dont let this flop i promise itāll be fun
