i’m starting to realize the “friendship where we bully each other” thing is a complicated subject for me, because as a survivor of bullying and my interests being mocked for basically my entire life, i don’t really find it funny or endearing when pals do it. i don’t mind gentle insults and inside jokes, but idk, there has to be a point where you go “maybe i shouldn’t cut on my friend’s new oc or special interest” and stop yourself. i think we should all try a little harder to know that boundary and not put our friends in those situations

My best friend and I used to greet each other with insults (“hey bitch!” “wassup slut?”) and generally poke fun at each other all the time. It’s how we showed affection, just constant little pokes and prods and minor nuisances. But I noticed that these exchanges were wearing her down through little behavioral ticks, like she’d go quiet or her laugh wasn’t as bubbly. So I changed how I show her affection and now scream “hi Dawn I love you :D” at the top of my lungs when I say hi. And I hear her stifle a giggle and she answers with either “love you too” or “hiiiii, love you!!!” depending on her mood at the time.

It’s fine to have a close friendship where you can pretend to be mean to each other and you both understand that none of that meanness is real. But the second it starts to feel real to either of you, that behavior should change.

i think that like, little jokes and ribbing can be okay but you need to make sure you’re not always bullying someone about the same thing constantly

like joking ‘hey idiot!’ is fine, but if you call one of your friends stupid all the time and literally never let them have any identity other than ‘the stupid one’, thats not a joking friendship. that’s actual bullying.

Yeah okay, those edits were made by her dad, a cishet person - and also her dad, a Holocaust survivor, who would have been brutally aware that when the diary was first published in freakin’ 1947, had he included anything which people could use to demonize his daughter or tar her as some kind of “pervert”, it would prevent the message he was trying to send about the horrors of the Holocaust and the heroism of his daughter from being properly understood and accepted the way he hoped.

That isn’t fair. It isn’t just. But it is reality. If Otto Frank had let this be included in the published version, there’s a large chance the homophobic backlash would have prevented the book from reaching the audience it did and spreading the message it needed to. It was NINETEEN. FORTY. SEVEN. The Holocaust had ended TWO YEARS AGO. The acceptance of LGBT identities was basically nonexistent. Otto Frank made a decision based on the time and place he was living in, about what the world at that time was and wasn’t ready to accept. 

Let me say this as bluntly as I can - I am a bisexual Jewish girl and I would have made the same decision Otto Frank did. Making sure Anne Frank was unambiguously seen as sympathic and heroic was more important. Making sure people weren’t sidetracked from the main issue of the Holocaust was more important. He shouldn’t have had to make that decision, without doubt. Anne Frank’s sexuality (however she would have identified in modern terms) shouldn’t be considered relevant to her status as a hero or a sympathetic victim. But in 1947, it undoubtedly would have been.

Otto Frank survived Auschwitz and lost his entire family (a wife and two teenage daughters) to the horrors of the Holocaust. He hoped that publishing his daughter’s diary would spread awareness and sympathy for the victims of the Holocaust. If he had to make sacrifices to do that - well frankly, so fucking be it. I don’t know who alive today has the right to judge him.

PLEASE do not forget that the gay men who survived being put into concentration camps by the Nazis WERE NOT FREED BY THE ALLIED FORCES. They were deemed rightfully convicted criminals and moved to prisons. This was not the battle Otto Frank was fighting and judging him as if he should have been fighting all the battles at once is not fair or realistic.

The way some of you talk about personality disorders is really bad actually.

When we say "destigmatize personality disorders" we don't mean "infantilize the shit out of them and pretend they're good and cool." I need yall to understand that personality disorders are still fuckin disorders. No they don't make you an evil abuser, but they can still cause you to harm yourself and the people around you. The symptoms still aren't fun and you still have to learn to manage them.

Telling people with PD's that all of their symptoms are okay and that they don't have to try and change their behavior (even if it's harmful) because they're "valid uwu" is not helping any of us. Stop with this fucking "you're perfect and valid" shit because some of us aren't perfect and sometimes we do bad shit, and it's important for us to be able to acknowledge when we've done harm and learn how to do better in the future. You are not destigmatizing PD's you are enabling harmful behavior.

"You're valid uwu" isn't gonna get rid of my recklessness and disregard for my own wellbeing. It isn't going to fix my communication issues because I can't understand other people's emotions. It isnt gonna get rid of my abandonment issues and lack of self confidence. Go do something fuckin useful and talk to people with PD's (and actually fucking listen to us). Uplift our voices so that we can actually talk about our experiences. Or at the very least, shut the fuck up.
