4 Things That Are Stopping You From Getting a Good Night’s Sleep
If there’s one factor that’s important for having enough energy to get through your day, it’s getting a full night of sleep. There’s just no comparison between how it feels to wake up refreshed and energized as opposed to barely being able to bring yourself out of bed.
What you might not realize, however, is that there are things you might be doing before your head actually hits the pillow that are having negative results on how well you sleep.
To give your body as much rest as possible, here are four factors that are likely preventing you from getting a solid night of sleep.
Eating/Drinking Before Turning In
One surefire way to upset your body enough that it interrupts your sleep schedule is by eating and/or drinking too much before you actually try to turn in for the night.
You may face several hours of being unable to fall asleep, along with waking up a number of times throughout the night once you do, all while your body attempts to digest whatever it was you recently consumed.
This is especially relevant to spicy foods, which can cause uncomfortable periods of heartburn as you’re lying in bed, or any caffeinated beverages, which will keep your mind stimulated for hours and make it that much harder to drift off.
Instead, it’s recommended that you eat a filling dinner several hours in advance of when you normally try to fall asleep; this will help you avoid any bodily interruptions.
Not Enough Physical Activity Throughout The Day
Leading a sedentary life in which you don’t get a whole lot of physical exercise throughout your day can make it a lot more difficult to fall asleep. Exercise at some point during your day is incredibly beneficial to your overall level of relaxation and can significantly reduce any stress or anxiety. It’s also just a great way to expend extra amounts of energy.
By not completing at least some sort of moderate workout, all that energy and stress/anxiety will remain in your system when you go to fall asleep. As long as you aren’t exercising immediately prior to bedtime (which can be just as bad as not exercising at all), working out at some point in the morning or afternoon should create a noticeable change in the quality of your sleep cycle.
Feeling Too Warm Or Too Cold
If your body temperature itself is not at a comfortable level, then it can prove quite the challenge to fall asleep. Whether you’re shivering because it’s too cold or you’re sweating because it’s too hot, you have to try and get your bedroom to an optimal temperature that won’t push you too far in any one direction.
Keep multiple blankets on hand so that you can shed or layer them accordingly depending on how you feel, and use your room’s heating/air conditioning to regulate the temperature and achieve that perfect in-between range.
Too Much Screen Time Before Bed
This is one thing that many people have likely heard before, but it bears repeating because of just how much it can affect your sleep. Staring at any sort of screen (whether it’s a computer monitor or a television or a smart-phone) inside of an hour before you go to bed can impede your ability to slip off into dream world.
Specifically, the light of the screens can serve to limit your body’s production of melatonin, a hormone that is crucial for your sleep cycle, as its release during the night promotes a state of sleep throughout your body. Interrupting this process by watching television or surfing the net right before you turn in can cause you to remain awake for hours while your body tries to come down off the excessive mental stimulation.
A good night of sleep goes a long way in making your waking life that much more enjoyable, so ensure you’re doing what you can to get the most out of your pillow time.
By familiarizing yourself with the four things mentioned above, you can make the necessary changes in the hours leading up to your bedtime that will make the transition to a sleeping state as seamless as possible. In the end, these tips should allow you to fall asleep quicker, remain asleep throughout the night, and wake up in the morning feeling refreshed.
Are You One Of The Many Adults That Have No Idea How To Brush Their Teeth?
Brushing your teeth is something that you’ve had experience with virtually your whole life. Unfortunately, though, there’s a better than fair chance that you may not have mastered how to properly brush them. Dental health can’t be taken for granted, since it pays to have a nice smile full of pearly whites. Anyone can learn how to properly brush his teeth; it’s just a matter of knowing the correct techniques. If you are among the many adults who have no clue about how to brush their teeth properly, you could be doing harm to your mouth. Here’s what you need to know about dental health and how to properly brush your teeth.
Which Areas Of The Mouth Should You Pay Attention To?
In order to properly clean your teeth and mouth, it’s important to know where you might need to be more careful and which areas might require some extra effort. You must always pay close attention to your gum line, areas that have restorations and the back teeth that are hard to get to. It’s very easy for food particles to build up in these areas, which can cause problems like bad breath or even gum disease later on.
It’s generally best to start with the upper teeth’s outer surfaces and then move to the lower teeth’s outer surfaces. You should follow this by cleaning the inner surfaces of your upper and lower teeth. Don’t forget to clean the chewing surfaces, as food and bacteria can easily build up in those locations. Finally, make sure you brush your palate (the roof of your mouth) and your tongue, as bacteria tend to accumulate in these parts of the mouth.
How Should You Hold And Move The Toothbrush?
The right techniques will make all the difference between brushing your teeth poorly and cleaning them correctly. When brushing, you should always use short, gentle strokes. It’s best that you tilt your toothbrush at an angle of 45 degrees against your gum line and then either roll or sweep the brush away from said gum line. Brush the outside of your teeth in a gentle though confident manner. The chewing surfaces and the insides of each tooth have to be brushed by using only short strokes that move back and forth. When brushing your tongue, use a gentle scraping motion to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.
It All Comes Down To The Type Of Toothbrush
Using the right type of toothbrush makes a big difference in your oral health as well. A toothbrush with soft bristles is the best type of toothbrush for removing plaque and debris from the mouth. Small-headed toothbrushes are also preferred because they are better able to get to the areas of the mouth that can be harder to reach, such as the back teeth. For some people, a battery-powered toothbrush is still a reliable and effective alternative to a manual one. If you have restricted dexterity, then a battery-powered toothbrush is a good choice.
Surprisingly, a large number of adults don’t know how to properly brush their teeth. By understanding the techniques you should use, you’ll have a much easier time keeping your teeth and mouth clean – which will preserve your teeth and help you to avoid costly restorative surgeries. Practicing good dental health habits can help you keep your smile looking great for years to come, and this starts with using the proper brushing techniques.
Is Your Diet Getting You Down? Foods That You Never Knew Are Linked With Depression
While there are many foods that can offer us comfort in times of stress, many of the on-the-fly food choices we make can actually contribute negatively to our health. The next time you think of picking up a brownie or a burger when you’re in a rush or working overtime, think again. These foods have been linked with depression, and should be avoided whenever possible.
The End-Of-The-Week Cocktail
While having a drink or two following a busy work week may help you unwind, it can actually have a negative impact on your mood. Because alcohol depresses the central nervous system, it slows down your ability to understand, maintain focus, and reason effectively. In addition, as your central nervous system controls your moods, consuming alcohol can hinder the way you process your emotions and may exacerbate any underlying feelings of sadness or negativity you have.
Sugar Replacements That (Artificially) Sweeten the Deal
While aspartame might seem like a good alternative to the refined sugar present in some of your favorite foods, it isn’t necessarily the better choice. Many artificial sweeteners actually block the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which can lead to health issues like headaches, insomnia, and even swift changes in your mood. While it’s a good idea to be careful about your sugar consumption, artificial sweeteners may not be the best option if you’re consuming them frequently.
An Excess Of Sodium
A certain amount of sodium is a necessary part of any diet, but many of the prepared and fat free foods that you consume can actually contain a lot more salt than your body needs on a daily basis. As an excess of sodium actually stresses your neurological system, salt consumption can lead to feelings of fatigue and unbalanced emotions, in addition to physical symptoms of fluid retention and bloating.
Beverages That Contain Caffeine
Though coffee is as commonplace in the morning as breakfast, it can actually cause disturbances in your sleep patterns that can have a negative impact on your emotions and your physical resilience. As the caffeine in coffee is also present in energy drinks, it can lead to physical symptoms like tremors, irritability, and general agitation.
The Oil In Your Deep Fried Favorites
The type of oil that is used to deep fry many of your favorite foods contains trans fats and these are a definite no-no for those trying to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Because hydrogenated oils can actually clog your arteries, they can lead to feelings of depression and physical fatigue, and can cause severe health problems down the line if they’re consumed in excess. If you’re craving deep fried foods but want to stay away from the hydrogenated oils, try using olive oil on your French fries and oven frying them instead!
While it’s easy to reach for comfort foods when you’re stressed or unhappy, making the choice to consume foods high in fat and sugar can actually lead to emotional unbalance and depression. Instead of choosing items that might be low in nutritional value, stick to healthy foods like fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. Save the sugar and salt for those times when you really can’t resist.
