I mean, the reason Reagan as governor stopped having the UC system be tuition free is because of how dangerous an “educated proletariat” is.

And like, I’m not arguing that going to the library is revolutionary (starting a community garden I might argue is, more on that later) but there’s a reason the right wants to defund libraries. Yes, they don’t want children to learn that lgbt people exist, but it’s also because literacy does give you freedom. There’s a reason why slaves weren’t allowed to learn how to read.

Now, as far as community gardens go, there’s something to be said about learning how to grow your own food and having a space where marginalized groups can gather (not that every community garden is a safe space for marginalized folks, but more on that in a second). There’s actually a community garden in my city that is being harassed by transphobes and Zionists because of an altar the garden has for a trans woman who was an advocate for sex workers and immigrants. In fact, the city is demanding the garden be shut down for it.

TLDR: third spaces like libraries and community gardens are good. An educated populace is good and threatening to authoritarians.

Andre Leon Talley’s contribution to black fashion and dandyism shouldn’t be overlooked.
