"To begin, or set out, as on a journey or activity...
...To appear or come suddenly into action, life, view, etc."
Starting is difficult. One doesn't know where to begin. One doesn't know what path they will take to achieve their goal. And that person is me.
Good thing there's such thing called the Internet. The Duke of Edinburgh website, http://www.dukeofed.com.au/Default.aspx, helped with my lack and knowledge. So, having read the website as thoroughly as I could, this is what I gather:
- I need to complete several requirements, two of which I will need to participate for 3 months and the another for 6 months.
- These three requirements are:
- Skill; which can include art, music, dance, photography, public speaking, and pretty much any interest that can be developed
- Physical Recreation; which means participating in a sport of choice for 3 or 6 months, and
- Volunteering; which is similar to community service.
- The last requirement is to complete the 'Qualifying Journey' which is similar to an expedition.
- Each requirement needs an Assessor and they will help and guide me (hopefully!) as I work in each Section.
So! First off, I need to get my parents' permission. After handing in the note to my Co-ordinator, I will register online at the DoE website and start my online Record Book. After that, I will start considering what I will do for each section and work out which of the three sections (Skill, Phys. Rec., or Volunteering) I will do for an extra 3 months.
Once I have decided that, I will talk to my Co-ordinator about the Assessors and approach them. After all that's done, I will start discussing with them what I will do, how I will achieve my goals and how frequently my Assessors will check up on my progress. I will plan this out on a planner which I will update and check with my Assessors. Then, I should be all set, and I'll start!
