❝ Oh, shut up. We both know that’s not true. ❞
Her voice was stern, almost as if she was the older one, the adult, at that very moment. And maybe in some way, Sarah actually was. She wasn’t stupid, she knew Andreas had gotten into a horrible situation, and there was no need for him to lie to her; she had seen enough pain in the world already to take whatever it had been that had happened to him. All that his reply did was disappoint her, as Sarah had been convinced the two of them had reached the point of being able to be honest to one another.
❝ Amateur or not, someone tried to kill you. I’m not going to ignore that. ❞
Sarah dipped the cloth in her hand in the bowl of water that she had gotten the moment she’d seen the other vampire enter the house hurt. After wringing it out a bit so that it wasn’t too wet, she lifted her hand with the cloth to his hairline and carefully started cleaning the wound, trying to keep the pressure as light as possible.
It was nearly embarrassing, how easily Sarah was able to see through his attempt to brush off the injury. He had been in much worse states before - in terms of severity this was next to nothing at all - but he could see from her reaction that this fact was immaterial. There was something touching about her concern, and the last thing he wanted was for her to retreat back into a state of mistrust.
“It tends to happen, when one is a member of the living dead,” he replied, though there wasn’t as much sarcasm in his tone as he might have used with someone else. A hiss of pain slipped out from between clenched teeth when the cloth touched the wound. The actual injury wasn’t anything close to lethal, but silver always made things more painful.
“The bleeding will stop soon enough. And if nothing else, we won’t have to worry about that particular amateur again.”
