People be like “I don’t trust scientists they can be greedy or lie” but then drink ferret snot marinated in non-GMO moonlight to stave off alzheimer’s, which they bought for $40 from a multimillionaire who has no medical training and named himself after a fruit.
Sadly relevant.

Could i ask for a piece of common misinformation that you would like to correct for everyone?
There are too many. Our entire culture is just a web of misinformation now.
This isn't necessarily the worst one but I'm going to pick the concept of "detoxification." There is nothing you can eat or drink that will remove any kind of "environmental poisons" that hypothetically build up in your body; all "detoxifying" products and diets are fake, yes ALL of them, the entire concept, fake fake fake, and many are even seriously dangerous but skirt regulation and liability.
Thinking or how capitalism replaced ‘we are all sinful and unworthy of paradise and we must repent and serve god our whole life because of it’
With ‘we are all lazy and unworthy of basic necessities and we must scrape by and be productive our whole life because of it’
And now there are segments of social justice culture, especially of liberal social justice culture, that want to replace that with ‘we are all guilty of climate change and systematic oppression and unworthy of compassion and we must sacrifice everything that gives us pleasure and throw ourselves fully into the fight against these systems because of it’.
And like, that is bullshit. We were not born guilty. Pursuing pleasure and resting are good actually. But more importantly: in all three cases, this line of thinking is designed to control people. Which is a very good reason not to trust anyone peddling guilt like that.
The Puritans got kicked out of England for a reason and that reason was they were shit.
When a climate solution requires regular people be miserable it’s because politicians worked harder to block everything that only inconvenienced corporations

From the notes on this it seems like a lot of people still think NFTs are actually about owning the artwork?
The artwork for an nft is just an icon symbolizing the crypto coin you bought, so it’s just kind of a little avatar for that “coin” for the fun of it. The actual thing being purchased is so many hours of computer processing and calculation; tremendous amounts that are all recorded by basically a special web address. The processing isn’t used to make anything other than that proof of itself, which is supposed to be part of the authenticity, so people can’t just make a coin out of a bunch of existing data or data that already served an unrelated purpose.
Every Bitcoin or doggycoin or NFT is generated by a “farm” of thousands of cpu’s doing nothing else for months straight.
One negative impact of this is that it has actually made cpu’s more expensive and scarce world wide, ie less accessible to poorer people. Another effect is that the total amount of energy being used to make these is producing more emissions than if some entire small nations went through another industrial revolution. There are lots of other ways crypto is measurably making the world worse with its existence, it’s a huge topic of discussion.
crypto can eat a flithy asshole
I wish there were different words for the different types of forgetting because when I say I forgot something, I don’t mean “I forgot we had plans on Friday.” I almost always mean “I forgot today was Friday.” I know my friend’s birthday is on March 20th, but I won’t wish her happy birthday on time because I won’t know it’s March 20th on March 20th. My forgetfulness has nothing to do with not caring about/remembering events and everything to do with my inability to keep up with the passage of time.
People talk a lot about “today’s terrible eating habits” and “the proliferation of ‘junk food’ today” and it makes me so mad. You will hate to hear this but eating and humanity’s relationship with food has changed for the better. Evidence of chronic malnutrition and starvation is found on so many remains in practically every different culture throughout history. And it wasn’t always a lack of food, it was a lack of understanding of what the body needs. Marasmus was an extremely common cause of death for children, it is a condition caused by severe malnutrition that results in stunted growth and often death. It effected children from affluent families, families that could afford to feed their children and did, not just children who were physically starving from lack of food. Now if we see a baby or a child with failure to thrive, we can supply rich formulas with the vitamins and calories they need to grow. They couldn’t do that back then because they didn’t understand.
We enrich common foods with vitamins and minerals that people are commonly deficient in (iodized salt, fluoride water) and it saves lives. With the invention of mass produced products and safe canning, we can send foods to regions they wouldn’t otherwise be available. It’s fantastic and it’s marvelous. Believe it or not, ‘processed foods’ have been very good for humanity.
Like you still don't want to rely on these things if you can help it but it absolutely does beat dying undernourished at 10 years old....and modern foods are absolutely not giving us new diseases or new kinds of cancer like people believe. Those illnesses were also always a problem, we just didn't coin scientific terminology for them yet.
I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned “forever” into the only acceptable definition of success.
Like… if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, it’s a “failed” business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you don’t actually want to keep doing that, you’re a “failed” writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, it’s a “failed” marriage.
The only acceptable “win condition” is “you keep doing that thing forever”. A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a “real” friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a “phase” - or, alternatively, a “pity” that you don’t do that thing any more. A fandom is “dying” because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things.
I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And it’s okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of success… I don’t think that’s doing us any good at all.
