Derek is nervous. 

He loathes the dentist. It’s not just the whirring of the machines, the cloying scent of other patient’s nerves as they sit beside him in the waiting room, it’s the fact a stranger is hovering over him, invading his personal space. When he was a kid, he had to literally grin and bare it. His mom was a fan of fitting in, humans go to the dentist, their teeth decay, there’s nothing wrong with having a check up twice a year to keep Derek’s pearly whites shining. She always used pat his cheek as she said so, push him gently towards the dreaded door wherein lay the evil Dr Lang. Their dentist was amiable, chatted to Derek about football— when Derek had absolutely no ability to reply with a damn mirror stuck in his mouth— and he’d always congratulate Derek on his healthy gums and teeth. But, Derek lived in fear of the day he accidentally sneezed and his fangs dropped, or for Dr Lang to prod slightly closer and then yell after finding something slightly out of the ordinary, shove a toothbrush down Derek’s throat and murder him on the spot.
