I spent this morning at Bignold Primary School talking to Year One all about how I design and make toys. I talked them through the process from drawing out ideas all the way to selling the toys, and set them up ready to design their own toys! They were a great bunch of kids, and it was such a joy to get their brains going and thinking about designing their own toys!

Sew Crafty Design Team Project Three: Convertible Mermaid Rag Doll

I have been SUPER behind on completing Project 3 for the SC Design Team, largely thanks to illness, Christmas and holidays. It is, however, now finished! I am so pleased with how this turned out! For project 3, I decided to create a mermaid rag doll that you could convert into a human. I made the doll itself larger than my normal dolls and changed the body shape slightly to accommodate a removable tail and clothing.

This is Coralea in her mermaid form (pictured at Horsey Beach in Norfolk near the resident grey seal colony). Her tail is made from a gorgeous fabric called ‘mermaid foil’, topped with green sequins. The ‘mermaid foil’ fabric is so hard to fully capture in a photo - the way it sparkles and ripples in the light is magnificent. It is, however, a bit of a beast to stitch with - it is incredibly slippery, and quite resistant to the needle. There was more than one occasion when I had to yank it out of the inner workings of my machine! I am so glad I persevered with it though, because it makes a truly magical mermaid tail. When Coralea decides to activate the magic in her seashell necklace (which is a real seashell, by the way!), she can convert into her human mode. To make sure she had everything she needed to explore life on land, I created her a dress, cape, shoes and bag. I am planning on taking her into town tomorrow to get some decent pictures of her out and about - for now, here she is chilling in my living room!

Lucy has been very diligently making her own tooth fairy pillow this afternoon as she has her first wobbly tooth! A tooth fairy pillow is an ideal project for little ones to sew as it is very simple shapes and lines that are easy to follow. She's quite proud of the finished result and is very excited about her first tooth fairy visit!

My first make of 2017 is complete! My goddaughter's birthday is tomorrow, and she's obsessed with vikings at the moment, so I decided to make her a Shield Maiden doll! Using a few pictures I found for reference (mostly the one on the left), I created Ranveig here. All she needs is a shield and a sword and she'll be ready for battle!

A few pics of some of my favourite pieces this year! It's been a crazy year, with all the planning, stress and work going in to setting up the business and getting my stuff out there. It has by no means been easy, but considering we've only been trading since May, I think we've done pretty well! Looking forward to a new year and some new products for the world to enjoy!!! S xx

Writing is on hold for this afternoon whilst my business partner and I brainstorm ideas for our 2017 product range. And by this I mean my father in law and I are eating all the chocolates whilst I sketch random ideas and hope I can make them work somehow.

Sketches and plans for new 2017 products! We have a really long list of new toys that we'd love to make, just have to work out if I can actually make them!
