It was different now though. The world was different. He wasn’t trying to save a few comic books…his father’s medal. 

“You’re the few family I have left. We can do something to help.”

But last time. Last time. God didn’t give us pain we can’t handle but this time He gave her something pretty close. 

“Micah,” she said, and she knelt down in front of him. “For once--we should help ourselves.”

“New Orleans,” she said, and there was an obvious question to be asked. The Hurricane. She hoped it wouldn’t be asked but just understood. “Lived there all my life. But there was a better job opportunity here for me.”

Monica brightened, to not seem so low. 

“Now I have to find that place. That’s why I came to this city.”

She’s not against moving forward. Feels like that’s the healthy thing to do. But not learning from the past could be a mistake. 

“Listen, Micah,” she began. Cautious in her way. “I’m more than your partner. I’m family. You can talk to me but you know what? You also gotta listen to me.”

“Oh God, no. Never follow my lead. I can follow my lead, because I’m the one taking the heat for it. You need to find your own–” This was painful. She gave up. Elle reached towards Monica, no permission asked—just started searching the girl’s pockets for the ipod, her father had gifted to her.

She pulled it out.

“Search, before I blast the door open.” Now that wouldn’t be nearly as subtle.

“Amaze me, Monica. You’re special. Don’t forget that.”

“Whoa there,” she said, nearly saying ‘kiddo’. Which would have kind of ruined her start. 

“I already got it,” she said, tapping her forehead. “I’m good. Please be careful with the iPod...”

She sighed, looked at the windows, the height of the building. Would be easy.

“And cover me.”

Elle shot her a look, turning for a moment as she repeated what Monica said, under her breath. She knew what she was—

It snapped. Had she heard it?

“Can’t you just parkour your way in there?”

“I could parkour my way up there. You wouldn’t believe the ways I parkour.’

She crossed her arms, drawing it out. 

“Buttttt--I’m just following your lead.”

Monica was standing back, just kind of watching. Elle was supposed to be the company agent pro.

Like looking at a ghost. Monica stopped staring and quickly adjusted her attitude. It was--wrong to make this so personal, the woman hadn’t asked for that. 

Not Niki. Tracy, yeah. She could tell this was an entirely different person. The body language alone. Monica focused on those differences and put her hands in her pockets. One thing did stick in her throat nonetheless: it couldn’t have been good for Micah to have seen her. Right?

“Ms. Strauss? Micah sent me to check up on you. See how you’re doing.”

He took in a deep breath, reluctant. Not sure how much he could tell her without slipping too much. “They won’t stop.”

“Peter.”

Her voice was firm, unyielding. 

“--It’s not that they won’t stop. You’ve given up.”

She was good. Too good. He shifted from one foot to the other. He let out a slow breath. ‘They’ve done a lot of bad things.” More bad than good. Mixing with them, being family with them meant he had his hands in it, too, didn’t? A burden he had to carry on his back. It was pretty heavy. But who else was going to do it? “Good intentions that got screwed up. Guess that’s the worst kind of bad.”

No. The worst kind was standing back and doing nothing. 

She reached out and put a hand on his arm. Bold, she knew. 

“Are they still doing bad things, Peter?”

He nodded. Guess it was probably part of her ability. Something like that, maybe. He let out a short breath and placed his hands into the pockets of his jacket.

“That mean you’ve got a pretty good guess at what I feel about the Company?”

He didn’t like the Company, not their tests or the their research. There was something unsettling about it. Save the world, that used to be their agenda. But he doubted it was anything close to that now.

“You think they are bad people,” she said. She stepped closer. “Then why haven’t you....”

Done anything. 

She could just ask but she didn’t know if she wanted the answer. 

“You know some of the bad people more personally than you’re letting on?”

“You should know by now that that’s not possible. You’re going to need some help.”

Help wouldn’t be enough. No one could humanly give what Monica needed to step away and do her own thing. 

“--Some help, sure,” she said. “Really, though, I need to stand on my own two feet. You have a life, Niki, your own life. Grief can tie us all up but I guess--.” She guessed God had a reason, she just couldn’t stop hurting. She couldn’t stop thinking of how adrift she was, thinking about herself. What about her brother?

“You have your own cross to bear. We all have to help ourselves.”

Claire smiled brightly and nodded with sure agreement. There was no way she was about to pass this chance up. “Are you kidding that sounds amazing.”

A small laugh parted from her as she began to fish her phone from her pocket. “Especially the bad television, think it’ll be a blast.”

She was excited. The last person she had hung out with had been Zack and that had pretty much ended by the time they had to leave Odessa. But Monica was like her and so was Micah, they could be her friends and they could all be themselves.

“Let me call my dad first, alright?”

Monica nodded and she wondered what that was like. Not in an envious way. But a dad. Her mom was still gone and she had to step up to fill shoes that she could never really measure up to.

She stepped away a bit, to give the girl some privacy. She was glad Claire had someone to care about her and protect her.
