Lobster in a bucket looks like a gigantic monster on a metallic planet, and the waterdrops look like stars.

To reiterate Gikandi, the aesthetic can never be sutured against or cauterized from the "colonial event"; and even more than that, I propose that the colonial event is the aesthetic— that its pleasures, tastes, manners, consist of this juxtaposition. What is pleasing, what is in beautiful form, is the violence. It is a possession; rather than being unpleasant or ugly, it is the desired and valued commodity of an elevated mind, a good character. It is the frisson, the jouissance in living life itself. The virtues espoused cannot be separate from the moments of their production and description.
