I was thinking about how in every book Daenerys always ends with a triumphant moment:

something important to me is that all the techniques meant to strip away the unsullied’s humanity don’t work. the only reason the unsullied are “compliant” as slaves is because of the very real threat of death/pain to themselves and/or their families. when they are freed, they don’t remain stony, emotionless warriors. they’re people who were subjected to unspeakable cruelty and made it out the other side

this is how i feel about both daenerys and neytiri. them having a peaceful ending — not necessarily a particularly happy one — would be not only the most fitting conclusion to their stories, but also the most revolutionary decision. having victims of abuse and/or oppression sacrificed for the “greater good” is a well-established trope, and an awful one. because if these characters die at the end, either in a brutal murder or a sacrifice of their own volition, what kind of message would that be? what would be the moral of the story? that the only apt and possible ending for people who have constantly suffered throughout their life is to die? that there’s no hope for them, that they can’t ever live or heal? having these characters live does not make their ending unrealistically happy, and it would not diminish their losses or the importance of the sacrifices and actions they make for the greater story. they can make sacrifices for the people they love, but they can also move on from that (as they already did in the past). yes, they have experienced unspeakable tragedies and losses since they were children, but that doesn’t have to be the end for them. no matter the abuse and the violence and the grief, healing is possible. finding peace is possible. especially since these are characters whose entire theme is resilience and regeneration in the face of trauma, war and destruction, characters who are the pillar and heart of stories whose core message is about hope and unity prevailing against the darkness, characters whose storyline is centered around oppressed people triumphing over their oppressors, and also and most importantly being reborn and moving on from their suffering and finding peace, balance and healing together.

You know, I'm rewatching some clips and I have to ask: why are the Avatar movies so allergic to using the word "wife"? Why is it always either "mate" (which, we're using animal words to describe the Indigenous people's relationship style? that's what we're doing?) or "your woman" (and curiously, I might be wrong, but I can't remember a single instance of anyone referring to Jake as "your man" to Neytiri, only to Neytiri as "your woman" to Jake...)?

I'd be less bothered by it if the Na'vi's relationship style was shown to be significantly different from what we understand husband/wife to mean in our culture, and thus they wanted to avoid using those words for it to remind people of that, but... it's not. As far as canon shows us, it seems to pretty much be a 1:1 to how we understand marriage. We have Na'vi words for husband/wife/spouse that translate directly - muntxatan/muntxate/muntxatu. So why are they so insistent on either referring to Neytiri in a weird and kind of misogynistic possessive tone, or to her and the concept in general with the same words we use to describe animal reproduction as if describing POC like they're animals isn't racism 101? It's just... such a weird little detail for them to insist on when it would have been so easy to just use the word wife.

in this scene dany is being presented to khal drogo, so i made her wearing a more traditional westerosi hair and a dress in her house colors. i thought she'd be wearing a style similar to viserys, who's described as still wearing westerosi clothing even in the heat on their way to vaes dothrak. dany's hair is inspired by brandy's in rodgers & hammerstein's cinderella, but i adapted it to this more renaissance style. viserys is wearing a chaperon because they're kinda funny looking and viserys is stupid.
