because trans girls are starting to talk about this again, it isn’t going to be long before a bunch of TME people come in like “um, if Allison Bechdel is a terf how come she said this nice thing about trans women in the 90s? checkmate you hysterical tranny” with a few examples of Bechdel being mildly supportive of trans people’s right to exist, but make no mistake — Bechdel keeps close company with self described terfs and has done basically forever; Adrienne Rich is pretty much her idol & the basis of her understanding of feminism, and she actively attended Michfest for absolutely years and years whilst they were excluding trans women and even whilst Camp Trans protested right outside, and even in her most recent book she talks about it as this magical place that was free of men rather than the symbol of transmisogynistic hate & violence it has been recognised as for years. Some of the trans storylines in DTWOF are actively transphobic imho, and the Dykes To Watch Out For website (also Bechdel’s blog) is still to this day filled to the fucking brim with blatant terf dogwhistles including referring to the trans girl character as “trans identified” in her bio.

People have to stop falling for “but they said nice things about trans people…” stuff. Some bigots are still polite enough to refer to trans people by the correct pronouns & think we deserve some basic respects in society/to be free from violence, but still fundamentally are bigots with transphobic ideas about gender. it is desperately important that we do not let transmisogyny go unrecognised and i acknowledged within the feminism movement.

As a follow up note, in addition to the transmisogyny she has also at times blatantly misgendered trans men as well. When I was a college student, UChicago hosted an exhibit of some photography she had done around the theme of butchness. And at the end of the lineup of photos there was a note that said something like “Some of the people in these photos actually prefer he/him pronouns and identify as men, but for the sake of consistency and centering butches I am just going use she/her for them all.” This was around somewhere between 2011 and 2014. So she fails even at “calling trans ppl the right pronouns” in some cases too

I am once again linking Hal Schrieve's review of Alison's new book, Spent, which circles back to revisit some of her classic Dykes To Watch Out For characters.

Hal clearly has a good opinion of Alison, but even ze is startled to find that Alison completely disappears her transfem character, Janis. Several other characters vanish, too, most of them women of color, and Alison spends a good chunk of the book sympathizing with MAGA fascists and doing a whole "they're not so bad! They're just misguided!" thing about them. She truly needs to be retired from the lesbian writing lexicon, like, yesterday.

idk i keep seeing previously size-inclusive brands remove plus-sized versions of their clothes from their catalogues entirely, even lines specifically aimed at bigger sizes are cutting their size range down and chopping the bigger ones. i keep seeing mean skinny tiktokers get famous because they said something rude about fat people. when i ask my doctor about weight loss (which my country's gender treatment clinic requires before i can access even preliminary talks about hrt), i'm immediately offered drugs about it - drugs which, according to the doctor, we don't know the long-term effects of. but surely! surely it can't be worse than being fat!

like why are people acting surprised? we've made being extremely wealthy the aspirational aesthetic to strive for, made 'being skinny and having a lot of time and money to stay beautiful' a not only viable but lucrative carreer for people, and then released a drug that is wildly expensive and will make people thin.

of course people are gonna make being thin the ultimate status symbol again - it more than ever before signals wealth and leisure-time.

like, do you think it's a coincidence that people are back to constantly spouting 'nothing tastes as good as skinny feels' again? and pretending being fat is a matter of lacking self-control around cake or whatever? as if people haven't spent decades trying to get these fucks to understand that actually healthy produce and the time to maintain your body are extreme luxuries in our society?

We haven’t improved since 2000’s, we’ve constantly been recessing.

The reason we think we’ve improved is because of body positivity, but body positivity is mainly about thin bodies and thin experiences, and even if body positivity is about fat people, it’s often not fat positive. The messages are more like ”Fat people are allowed to love themselves if they’re actively trying to lose weight” and body positive people often call discrimination against fat people bullying, and ignore fatphobia as a social justice issue.

We’ve rebranded being fat into ”being chubby”.

I’ve seen a body-positive influencer cry on social media because she was called fat, and she prefers the word plus-size.

I see thin people say ”you’re not fat, you’re beautiful” or just ”you’re beautiful” everytime on posts where fat people talk about the discrimination they face as fat people. Which might sound nice, but they’re still ignoring the whole message the fat person in the video was talking about. Imagine a post on queer rights or misogyny and all but one or two of the comments just being ”you’re so beautiful”.

I’ve seen thin people comment ”what about thin people” on posts about fat people! I wish I was kidding!

I see clothing brands sizing down. I walked into an H&M and another clothing store last week just looking around, and I couldn’t see any XL or L sized clothing at the front of the H&M store. And I couldn’t find any L or XL sized clothing in another prominent clothing store I walked into. Everything was XS and S and maybe M.

The fact that Disney threw one fat side character into their Cinderella remake doesn’t mean we are improving. I grew up with not a single person like me in fiction and I still can’t find people like me in books.

We often talk about how the internet makes teenagers feel bad about their bodies because they see people with perfect lifes and bodies, but when are we going to talk about the fact that the internet is brimming with hate against fat people? Every fat influencer and social media poster has gotten hate messages and comments at some point. Children are growing up in a world where we openly harrass fat people online!

Anti-fat ads have been a constant since the early 2000s at least. I remember being a child and watching anti-fat ads and I’m 31. I remember being forced to watch Supersize Me in school in 2011.

Fatphobia has not, even slightly, even in the tiniest bit, improved in the last 30 years. It has exclusively gotten worse. In the mid 2010s it momentarily got better for straight size people who weren’t stick thin and that is it.

What I was taught growing up: Wild edible plants and animals were just so naturally abundant that the indigenous people of my area, namely western Washington state, didn't have to develop agriculture and could just easily forage/hunt for all their needs.

The first pebble in what would become a landslide: Native peoples practiced intentional fire, which kept the trees from growing over the camas praire.

The next: PNW native peoples intentionally planted and cultivated forest gardens, and we can still see the increase in biodiversity where these gardens were today.

The next: We have an oak prairie savanna ecosystem that was intentionally maintained via intentional fire (which they were banned from doing for like, 100 years and we're just now starting to do again), and this ecosystem is disappearing as Douglas firs spread, invasive species take over, and land is turned into European-style agricultural systems.

The Land Slide: Actually, the native peoples had a complex agricultural and food processing system that allowed them to meet all their needs throughout the year, including storing food for the long, wet, dark winter. They collected a wide variety of plant foods (along with the salmon, deer, and other animals they hunted), from seaweeds to roots to berries, and they also managed these food systems via not only burning, but pruning, weeding, planting, digging/tilling, selectively harvesting root crops so that smaller ones were left behind to grow and the biggest were left to reseed, and careful harvesting at particular times for each species that both ensured their perennial (!) crops would continue thriving and that harvest occurred at the best time for the best quality food. American settlers were willfully ignorant of the complex agricultural system, because being thus allowed them to claim the land wasn't being used. Native peoples were actively managing the ecosystem to produce their food, in a sustainable manner that increased biodiversity, thus benefiting not only themselves but other species as well.

there are folks in the replies who watched an episode of tierzoo or read a reddit copypasta or something and think koalas and mola mola are useless and hate them for that and that is awful and shitty. if they were 'useless' those species wouldn't exist. by consuming and being consumed literally every species contributes to the ecosystem. and regardless, why does an animal have to have an apparent "use" for its existence to be valid??? why does an animal living miles and miles away from you deserve your hatred, just because it swims a little slow or eats poisonous leaves?? i find this a very awful mentality to have. please have more empathy for your fellow creature and do better.
